AFL Autopsy JLT 1: 9 point loss to Carlton

I just watched the replay and I think we were totally cruising until we decided to turn it on for a bit and cut them to pieces. Even then it didn't look like we were trying that hard. Seems like we can turn it on when want to now.
Well that's a relief, to know that we can play well in patches
They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned,
Our money's all been spent

Let’s just say it wasn’t good. Not disastrous like last year, but not good.

We didn’t look fluent and again look behind the 8-ball at this stage. Hopefully it’s not too far.

There’s always the “forget it all, it’s pre season!” mob who steadfastly refuse to pay any attention at all to pre season results.

Personally I disagree - it’s not like years ago when you’d have 4 preseason games and genuinely ease into it. You have two competitive hit outs and then the real stuff starts - it’s 20 days away now. You don’t just flick a switch in a couple of weeks and go into beast mode. These two JLT games are played at very high intensity and most players are tuned up. They’re a good form guide.

Last year was a perfect example. I couldn’t believe the people who stuck their heads in the sand after Richmond - who should’ve been 4 weeks behind us due to playing in the GF the year before - absolutely blew us off the park to the tune of 100-odd points. A result like that clearly shows you have massive issues. People thought it meant nothing. But it showed precisely the terrible state we were in and 6-8 weeks into the season, our year was over. Before we took unprecedented, drastic steps and had a coaching shake up after 8 weeks.

So this wasn’t good. Again, nothing like the pathetic shit from last year, and I expect Carlton will have improved a bit. But we need to have as well. Have we? Who knows, but we were underwhelming. We’re in better shape than this time last year, but that’s not saying much. We need to hit the ground running and not just wake up in round 7 or 8 again.
Mate, half our midfield were coming off injuries and no doubt were instructed to take it easy. The only foil we had to that reality was Langford and Shiel. Shiel went off half way through and Langford had a poor game. There was nothing to take out of that performance other than Langford hasn't hit the ground running. Perhaps not coincidently, Langford was about the biggest question mark i had going into this season so i have to say i'm not happy about that.

It wasn’t a good performance. As I said, not disastrous, but wasn’t good. Carlton have improved but are not going to be a contender this year.

Was really disappointing to see the team put up that type of performance after all the good things we heard over the summer.

Can you imagine if we flogged Carlton all the fluff articles we saw over the summer would be doubled right now.

id say it was more disappointing than not good.
We barely got out of 3rd. And when we did we put them to the sword.
7 touches to Merrett is how seriously we took it.

All good if we were dusting the cobwebs off.
Id like to see us take Geelong a little more seriously and treat it as if it were Rd1.

From the blues game, all i got were Shiel, Smith and McGrath are too professional to be anything otherwise.
Their example is one the club should follow if we're gonna take the next step.
