Jonathon Ceglar smokey to play finals this year

Looking like Ceglar was never brought here to be a backup. Obviously plans are for him and Stanley to form a partnership.
If that was ever the plan, it has, hopefully, been overtaken by events, namely Stanley having his best Geelong season, and the Stanley-Blicavs combo working so well.

Why on earth would you want to change anything from thhe Melb game set up - Stewart for Zach Guthrie and Parfitt for Miers - and thats your best team

Ceglar was a battler at Hawthorn basically - and highly inconsistent according to their supporters

Rhys is playing very well in the ruck - hopefully Ceglar is not required

O’Connor drops out before Guthrie for mine, then there's the question of who goes out for Kolodjashnij, because as sure as night follows day he'll be straight back in when available.

"All those VFL games"....you mean ONE game...and ONE pundit said he is no chance whatsoever based on ONE game? In depth analysis there GOB.

.....and what has my support of Jack Steven got to do with this issue?? Totally irrelevant

Oh...or are you pointing out that I have been wrong in the past?. Pot kettle much, Mr Perfection??

(My God..I have been wrong on the internet..what devastating news that is...I never knew.......)

It is a fact though that we do not have a big pack marking player in our forward line, made more obvious when Cameron goes roaming into the middle.

Don't think they'll drop O'Connor straight after agreeing to extend his contract for another 2 years.
Nor Kolo, who was absolutely starring in the NM game before he was injured.

When was the O'Connor extension announced?

Didn't know that about O'Connor, shouldn't really effect their decision whether he goes out or not though (hopefully) Guthrie is in better form in my opinion, and should retain his spot when Kolodjashnij returns, probably this week.

Ceglar isn't that player though is he? It's Rohan or Sav or maybe Neale? All are good pack marking forwards.

Rohan offers more speed and pressure around the f50 than Sav or Neale. Sav can do more of the ruck duties when needed.

With Blicavs now basically capable of doing everything, I feel like Rohan is the man as he adds that something extra - a closing speed that can really put some fear into defenders.

I think the days of rucks who "rest up forward" are pretty much over - at least for the cats. The good defences are too savvy. We need a team of constant movement and clever ball-use. Not a static tree-trunk in the goalsquare who you can just kick it on their head and hope for the best.

I agree that with the Stanley/Blics combination, another specialist ruck isn't needed as such.
Rohan isn't big enough and doesn't take enough pack marks to solve the issue. Sav doesn't take enough marks, doesn't get enough possessions and doesn't kick goals (and is an ordinary kick for goal). Neale hasn't done enough and is too inexperienced to risk playing in the finals this season.
Doesn't Melbourne put Jackson and Gawn close to goal for the big mark? The MC obviously likes a pack crasher which is why Sav got so many games. Part of the job is to bring the ball to ground which Stanley/Ceglar should also be able to do.
If Ceglar finds form, could they play the more mobile Stanley more in the forward line? I don't know who would go out as we want Stengle, Close and Rohan in. Miers?
We have had some games where we have not had anyone properly contesting the long kicks in to the forwards and I see it as a weakness.
Now, when Blics is doing the main rucking, where does Stanley go other than having a rest on the bench?

I assume that whenever Blics is doing the centre bounce ruck, Stanley is off the ground. Stanley's TOG is around 74% and he takes about 50% of the ruck contests overall, however that stat includes ball ups in d50 and f50 where others like Hawkins and Blicavs shoulder more of the load.

Whichever way they go, I just hope they're not springing something completely new on the eve of finals. I don't think I could deal with it.

It's not that I don't agree with you. It's just that you (and others) celebrating this here actually sends shivers down my spine. Can't help worrying that our 'embarrassment of riches' will evaporate to Esava being backed by Henry in the ruck by the time the Dogs game rolls around.

If this ends up occuring, I will admit to jinxing us and accept full responsibility.

Absolutely. Stanley is having a fantastic season and full credit to him. Fingers crossed he can keep it going but if he gets injured, or goes back to bad Rhys, it's great to have options as Ceglar is more than capable. But the number one ruck is certainly Stanley's to lose

Interview with Cegs on the Geelong website.
He states he is a few weeks away from being fully match fit.
Definitely talking with a confidence or at least feeling that he could push into the side (alongside Stanley).
Time will tell I guess, I'm not sure that playing 2 rucks is the answer, but at least he will likely be available if needed.

First things first is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If our current set up rolls over Carlton, I don't see how you change the current set up. Ceglar is a good ruck, but Blicavs/Stanley is working so well it would be utter insanity to alter it. You only bring Cegs in IF Stanleys form drops off a cliff, or he/Blicavs get injured.

The last 2 years with the 6-6-6 rule are showing that if you want success 2 rucks tends to do the job because centre clearances are now so vital. Melbourne have 2 elite rucks, when Gawn was slipping in the GF Jackson went in and turned the match around.
Dogs had Martin and English, who are good but lets be honest, Martin is long in the legs and was never elite, and English is better around the ground.

The only way that works is if that means you put Blicavs on the wing instead of Menegola and tell him to play the same role he is in now i.e full ground midfielder.
That would allow Stanley to push forward to help out Hawkins when Cameron pushes up the ground.

But it only REALLY works if both Ceglar and Stanley BOTH dominate hit outs to advantage as having them both on the field slows us down.

The other thing the 6-6-6 rule has shown is how important ruckmen like Stanley or Blicavs can be when they are capable of getting their own forward-breaking centre clearances.
