Farg that. Absolutely hate this bloke. And here everything was chugging along nicely. This one I’m struggling with.

Clarkson isn’t just bringing him on board to look nice. He’s obviously sees value in what Josh can provide from his experience as a 3x Premiership 2x BNF player. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been brought in to help with the culture side either, despite being a bit of a f***wit he’s a big personality and a good time. Imagine he’d be much more relatable to the younger guys then Clarko, Ratts & Blakey.

It also wouldn’t surprise me one bit either if Josh wanted to help the club that he did turn his back on for a really successful Hawks era.
I have it on good authority that there is truth in your last line.

I have absolutely no problem with Gibson's appointment at a personal level. Yes, his exit as a player from North was disappointing, but grudges from 13 years ago can't get in the way of the pursuit of getting this great club back to where it should be.

My only question is Gibson, Viney, Shiels, Monkhorst, Howe, Ratten....how extensive is our search for the best people for the job? Or is it just gathering together Clarko's Hawks mates?

It's not that many. All clubs have links now. It's about creating a winning team.

There are a lot of people around our club who know what it takes win.

Gibson - Unknown from a coaching perspective. 3x Premiership player, 2x BNF. A type of player that Clarko has publicly said he wants to turn Logue into. Gibson also knows North. Our backline is a mess so any help we can get is good & we probably aren’t getting anyone in high regard with what is left of the soft cap. Highly likely there is a “repay North” factor in his appointment IMO.

Viney - Very highly regarded. Instrumental in both Hawthorn & Melbournes success. Every club would want him. It’s only Clarksons relationship that got him.

Monkhurst - How many other ruck coaches in the competition can anyone name? Monkey is about the only one I knew from other clubs, largely due to the success he had at Hawthorn and his big personality.

Ratten - Had a big queue of clubs wanting him as an assistant. Most thought he’d take a break from the game, but his relationship with Clarkson got him here.

Shiels & Howe - We need mature players. Are they Luke Hodge? Absolutely not, but they know Clarksons system and one is multiple premiership player. I’m sure we’d have signed Mundy, Gunston & Kennedy (WCE) if we were able to, but that just wasn’t going to happen.

In summary, I think Viney, Ratten & Monkey are the best people available, which we’ve gotten due to Clarksons relationships with them - we should really be celebrating this, because without him we wouldn’t have been a chance IMO. Gibson, Shiels & Howe are a wait and see, but they make perfect sense.

It's every external appointment apart from Tucker and Logue.

Ratten is a great get. As is Viney. Monkhorst's role seems small. Gibson is part time. Howe and Shiels are playing roles. It's all good.

But if the knock on Clarko was that he needed people around him who would challenge him...well, that hasn't happened.

So you would rather AC takes a punt on people that he doesn’t know and have experience of instead of bringing with him those whose experience he values and whose capabilities he is comfortable with. I think I would be doing exactly what he is. He has been at Hawthorn for a very long time. Stands to reason that those people he trusts and knows are from HFC. No one is complaining about Viney and his last football experience was with Melbourne.

Just because he's looking for people he doesn't know, doesn't mean he's taking a punt.

The other thing to remember is that most of these blokes owe AC. He either gave them
Their first chance or he taught them. He is calling in favours and rightly so. There is a cap so no one is getting huge bucks. This is why it has a great feel. It’s a mission.

Hawks offered him far more cash than we did, so he was on his way.
My memory is a bit different. We weren't cool enough for Josh. He oddly developed a bit of a man crush on Buddy and decided to follow the bright lights. As good as a player he ended up, he could have easily not had an AFL career. We did pluck him from relative obscurity at Port Melbourne.
