Josh Gibson has returned to Arden Street more than a decade after being traded to Hawthorn with the three-time premiership defender joining North Melbourne’s coaching panel.

Gibson, 38, has reunited with Alastair Clarkson, with whom he combined for Hawthorn’s three-peat of flags between 2013 and 2015.

The All-Australian and dual Hawks best and fairest winner will work with North’s defenders in a part-time specialist coaching role, assisting line coach John Blakey.

It is a homecoming of sorts for a man once regarded as one of the best defenders in the AFL, who left the Kangaroos for Hawthorn at the end of 2009 after 65 games in the blue and white.

Gibson joins a stacked North coaching team working beneath Clarkson. Alongside line coaches Blakey, Jordan Russell and Leigh Adams, the Roos also have former St Kilda and Carlton coach Brett Ratten, VFL/AFL games record-holder and club great Brent Harvey, Damian Monkhorst, Gavin Brown, Tom Lynch and AFLW captain Emma Kearney on the books.

Think Josh is on record for saying how difficult the decision was to leave. He left & became a key part of one of the biggest dynastys in the games history. I personally don't hold a grudge, despite it being devastating at the time.

We are at an all time low on-field. He clearly wants to come back and help repay the club. Welcome home Josh.
