IGN:
In the same stroke, it is not the be all and end all of console shooters, or even shooters on the PS3.
The only one that comes to my head is CoD4. Because they mentioned consoles, PS3 is obviously referring to PS3 exclusives and there is only Resistance 2 to compete with.
Seems a bit odd that they're saying that as it's getting killer reviews all round.

Mentions that in more detail on the last couple of pages of the review.

It's really important at this stage in the review to call out a few things that hold Killzone 2 back from being a rapturous gameplay delight, and therefore a near-perfect experience. PlayStation fanboys out there: please brace yourself, because this is going to hurt a little bit. Killzone 2 never comes as close to being as innovative as it is striking to look at. There are some incredible water cooler moments in there – don't get us wrong - but the final level of the game deflates the experience somewhat and really underlines how little the game pushes the boundaries of shooters. After nine fairly solid stages that, at worst, toe the FPS line to a tee, the tenth and final stage builds and builds and builds... only to soil itself at the finish line like an over-exhausted marathon runner. Yes, you get across the line – but there isn't a whole lot of dignity or fanfare when you do.

When you strip back the incredible graphics and in-your-face production values, there's very little that pushes Killzone 2 above games like Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Halo 3 or Crysis in terms of gameplay. The cover system is handy, but frequently, using cover becomes almost a moot point; a big gun and a whole lot of patience become your best friend. Besides, cover systems are hardly unique these days – even in first-person shooters.

Is Killzone iconic, then? Well, the enemies certainly are from a design standpoint – except, when you realise that there are only a handful of ground troop types, a token 'tank' class and a few airborne enemies that could've been pulled from any of the shooters mentioned above. The weapons aren't remarkable, outside of the Electro-gun, which is one of the sole sci-fi-esque weapons in the game. You're really only looking at your usual line-up of SMGs, rifles, shotguns, explosives and distance weapons – so nothing really sets Killzone apart here too. Well, is it epic in length? At nine and half hours on our first play through on standard difficulty and moderately thorough exploration, we'd have to go with no.

In summary, it seems like it's a good game that does nothing really wrong, well executed etc. But it follows the FPS formula to the letter.

But it looks a good game, and if you have a ps3 and like FPS's, i'd say it's a must buy. So you couldn't review it poorly

Is it a console seller? As a FPS fan, and someone who's thinking about buying a ps3....i dunno. Might wait till it comes out and see what the average person on here thinks

The average person on here? Like Kerrby or HBK? Whether the game is great or average, they'll both be orgasming about it incessantly and begging you to buy a PS3 to play it.

That review pretty much confirmed everything I had expected, and that is that the graphics are great but it will have very generic FPS gameplay.

Of course, certain PS3 fanboys believe that graphics are everything and quality of gameplay doesn't come into play at all.

Besides, those graphics, as good as they are, are just the same old brown and gray that we see in every 'next gen' FPS.

Most generic FPS are fun. For example; Call of Duty and Half Life.

Worst insult ever.

Average person, as in not rabid fanboys. :D

Unfair to kerrby. Kerbs usually gives an honest assessment of games he has played so i'll be interested to see what his impressions are

Whats wrong with following something that works? Why does have to be innovative, when it can be the best of the current crop?

Very weak insult, all FPS games are "generic". Killzone 2 seems unfairly maligned for it though, I think if it wasn't such a high profile PS3 exclusive it wouldn't have copped nearly as much criticism.

I'm really looking forward to the demo next week. Killzone 2 seems to check every box for me, looks awesome, sounds great, has great more realistic weighty gameplay and excellent multiplayer. If you own a PS3 and want an FPS then I can't see how you can go past Killzone 2.

Not going into whether this game is best of the current crop, looking at those reviews that's hard to actually determine

But if you were a PS3 owner, as you said, there's nothing wrong with making something that works well, and you're going to almost certainly grab this.

But speaking as someone who is an avid gamer, looking for an excuse to buy a PS3, i'd be more likely to buy a game that stood out as something different, that i couldn't buy on my current console, rather than basically a homage to all other great shooters which i can get on my current console.

If you were making a game, and trying to make it the most derivitive, generic FPS of all time, the name you would come up would be something along the lines of 'Kill Zone'. Seriously.

I'm just talking about the name here, no idea how it plays. But really, Killzone. It's ridiculous.

It's like the fake name of a game they reference in a movie about hacking or cyber-something. 'Kill Zone'.
I love how you guys both jump on Killzone for being "Generic", when for the IGN reviews Killzone 2 comes up even with Halo 3, score-wise.

Neither of you will most likely end up playing this for any real length of time, so basically it won't matter anyway, but I'm sure if you do, it will be said as "Wow, this game is soooo...average, I can't believe the averageness of it."

BTW Why are you talking about Killzone 2 Biggy, I thought you were sick of it?

Much like generic names such as Street Fighter for a game in which you fight on Streets, or a game called Skate, in which you...skate, so many games have generic names, yet you pick Killzone as the one.

Honestly, having a go at the name?!?

What would you choose?

"Totally awesomeness fun killing game"????

I hate to admit this but i'm a little worried. Ffs, Resistance 2 got a higher score and we know how that turned out :D.

I'm not doubting Killzone 2, I still think it's a contender for GOTY. So far the scores have been great and it's looking better everytime I see it.

When I played it at eGames I was just blown away. My friends still bring it up that I hogged it and didn't let them have a fair shot. I just tell them it's their fault for dying haha.

Nobody believes IGN anyway.;)

Although I think R2 managed the higher score for it's amazing online(With the co-op and 60 player games).

Whereas Killzone 2 seems to be getting points off for no co-op(Didn't see many bagging out COD4 for not having co-op though), and either a not quite long enough(10 hours is long enough, but I think they feel it should be longer for how fun it is) and some of the minor technical elements.

That seems to be the biggest 'criticism' of K2 so far, that it does nothing overly innovative, apart from the FPS cover system, the problem is, if games try to be too innovative or too different they will get criticised for that as well, so either way K2 was never going to win the argument.

Crouch Hold toggle (MP only)
Dpad-Up - Objectives (SP Only)

So we can't fully customise the controls?
No, full customisation is out, but 6 set-up's should leave you with at least one you like, and personally I rather the adapt to controls than having it the same across all games, I don't think I touched the R2 customisations.
Is the zoom toggled?
This is one of the options "Zoom Hold toggle" so you can toggle it on, or hold it to zoom.

I'll be using Alternate 2.
Looking at it closer that does look like the best now, very COD4 like if I remember those controls right.
