JUST months before they were to be married, Olympic gold medallist swimmer Leisel Jones and her fiance, former AFL footballer Marty Pask, have ended their two-year relationship.

The pair announced the split yesterday through a joint statement issued by Jones' management company, Grand Slam International.

"We have shared some wonderful memories together but over time we have realised that we were not ready for the commitment of marriage," Jones said.

"We are still friends and I will always be there to support him."

The pair met and began their relationship in late 2006 in Brisbane where Jones was living and training, and Pask was playing with the Brisbane Lions. He played only eight senior AFL games with the Lions that season, before being traded to the Western Bulldogs, and as a result the couple began a long-distance relationship.

But in April 2007, after competing at the world championships in Melbourne, Jones announced she had decided to leave her coach, Stephan Widmer, and move to Melbourne to join Rohan Taylor and to once again be with Pask.

In September that year Pask was delisted by the Bulldogs. Days later he asked Jones to marry him. They were to be married early next year

Ahh he was always trying to pick up girls at pubs in Brisbane. Lol he tried to pickup a girlfriend of mine last year at the Regatta. It's possible little Leisel caught on to his nocturnal activities.
