With a back 6 of DBJ, Pittard, Trengove, Jonas, Broadbent and Austin we can use Hombsch elsewhere.

A preseason in the forwards group and he would be fine.

Turn arguably our best defender into a forward? lolwat?

If we had to turn any one of those seven players into a forward, it should be Trengove. With Austin covering his position down back, he could replace Lobbe and rotate through the ruck with Ryder.

I am a little concerned about Trengove possibly heading back to Victoria. He loves the club but some pressure perhaps being applied by another party.

only positive is this is arguably his best season and his trade value would be at an all time high.

one would hope that has no influence. Should be a footy decision.

Could not agree more. But then I look at the pre-season photo of our eight-man leadership group, and read the text that went with it, and I get an uncomfortable feeling, every time.

i had heard talks on new deal had stalled and he had spoken to a melbourne based club.

I'd ask you if you've ever seen Hombsch play forward, but it would be a waste of time because I know that the answer would be no.

Track down Port v Essendon from 2013, when we did decide to chuck him down forward for a game to see how he went. He looked like a tall Auskicker had wandered onto the field. Does not have a forward's brain whatsoever.

Fun fact: Jack Hombsch is currently leading the AFL for 'most games without a goal' with 17 more games than the next highest. He's also 14th on the all time list for most games before his first goal.

So, yeah. In the 120 year history of the VFL/AFL, of the tens of thousands of players who have played in the league, there have only been 13 players who went as long as Jack Hombsch without kicking their first goal. Sounds like a prime candidate for our next key forward! :drunk:

So in essence, it'd be like chucking Carlile on ball in a bid to be our first ever Brownlow winner?

Cracking stat that, one to keep an eye on.

Who has the record and how many games is it?

Ted Potter didn't kick a goal in his 182 game career. Rod Carter went 214 games without kicking a goal, but he eventually snagged one.

Actually, on second look I was reading the all-time table wrong, it doesn't include the players who have never kicked a goal. But Hombsch is still leading current players for most games without a goal.

Bad time to be foxing. We're prime to let Jonas go. Trengove, Hombsch, Austin & Clurey are fine tall options and we're not short on smalls either.

I wouldn't be upset if Stewart, O'Shea and Jonas all left.

I still like it.

What odds do you reckon I would get on him breaking the record and then finally jagging one in the 2022 GF? :p

AFL to soften rules around Bombers' top-ups
However, AFL.com.au understands after a push and submission from the AFL Players' Association, the League has looked over its free agency rules and found that because the 10 players will need to be delisted to leave Essendon's list, they should qualify as delisted free agents.
That would allow Essendon – and any other clubs interested in any of the top-ups – to sign them as delisted free agents and not be required to wait until November's national, rookie or pre-season draft to add them to a list

Wonder if the Club is looking at any on the Essendon players

So did we pay Paddy and Gus $0 for the 2016 season? That would appear to open up a lot of cap space for 2017.
We paid a part of their salaries plus we had to pay match payments to those who stepped in to replace them so it would be possibly around half of their salaries left or that's what Chris Davies intimated. He said match payments were eating into it

It would be nice if we got something back after the AFL reamed us with no top ups.

"... except Port because Collingwood said caveat emptor."

Hombsch makes some of our failed forwards look like prime Warren Tredrea.
