Why cant tv channels show live footy, if the radio can, and what does live against the gate mean?

If you could watch the footy live on tv why would you go? on the Radio there is no visual so people listen to it at the footy.

Why cant tv channels show live footy, if the radio can, and what does live against the gate mean?

live against the gate means that the game on TV is live whilst there is still tickets for sale on the gate (so both the TV station and the AFL are fighting for the same customer who wants to see live tv).

In Perth they only show live games if they are Away games or the game is sold out.

Dont be complaining, in Adelaide a Bomber supporter is lucky to hear the bombers games on radio let alone TV. So many times i've had crows or port on 4-5 radio stations and no-one broadcasting bombers at all...

Its rediculous that they still use "against the gate" as a reason not to telecast live.

I doubt there are many footy followers, if any, who would decide not to go to the footy just because its live instead of 20 minutes delayed on telly...

Telecasting live agaisnt the gate, thus affecting crowds is a myth.

There is absolutely no evidence that telecasting a game live in the home city affects attendance.

It doesn't affect the attendance at all, or if it does, only by such a miniscule amount that it makes no difference.

This is all true that it doesnt affect the gate too much. But i do think it encourages people to go to the game. Eg. weather wise i would rather sit at home and watch a live telecast than sit at a rainy MCG

The AFL has no issue with games being shown live against the gate. They stated this several times during the last round of TV rights. They were pushing for the Friday night game to be live or closer to live, rather then finish at 11:30pm.

All 4 foxtel games are live with at least 1 or 2 being in Melbourne.

Channel 9 were successful in changing this old theory with the Cricket Australia. All test and one day games are broadcast live against the gate (sell out or not). Crowd figures there have been stable or increased.
