Mad Monday...

I heard a Brisbane Lions player (Lisle) did a 'blackface' impersonation of Lebron James ..

How stupid can you get ?

Yet when a black guy does whiteface nobody has a problem

Here's what you have to justify: in what context is child abuse funny? Are we missing something? That's what their outfits represent, right? Child pedophilia. Please explain

because its a costume. no-one is saying pedophilia is funny but the costume is. thats all it is, a costume of a topical nature.

Do you get offended if someone dresses up as freddy krueger at a fancy dress up party? he was a fictional child molesterer/murderer.

Hmmm....Harry Connick Jnr and a fair slab of the civilised world disagree.

yeah and i argued with on this exact same issue back then. its not painting your face as a racial taunt/issue, its for a dress up to look like a black athlete. no issue.

On Hey Hey, someone impersonated michael jackson and to impersonate him (from the 80's not 2000's) it would be best to have a black face/body. makes sense to me.

The heck? No it isn't.

Pathetic by the players involved.

...and put it on their Instagram.

'...a hospital of rape victims...' WTF are you talking about?

on THEIR instagram, which no one is forced to look at

Not until the media decides to make it a front page story
If its such a sensitive photo why is it on the front page of every media outlet, if its so offensive why are they showing it all over the newspapers

Fact is no one here would have seen it if the media hadn't picked it up

The rape thing is that they didnt go out and find people to offend, people found what they were doing and chose to get offended

Double standards maybe?

Yes Racism is a terrible thing but someone tell me what the **** is the difference between a white person painting their face black and a black person painting their face white. Absolutely nothing. You want equal rights, great, then make them actually equal.
Yet when a black guy does whiteface nobody has a problem
You guys obviously have no idea about the significance of blackface in perpetuating racism against blacks.

The two acts are not equal.

There you go. I don't get offended because he is a fictional character out of an iconic fictional film in which he is the villain. That's the context.
The context behind this as you say is 'topical' in that it trivialises the fact that so many vulnerable children were sexually abused and emotionally scarred.
Can you honestly say if it was your daughter that had been abused by Harris you wouldn't feel offended knowing it was essentially your daughter being represented in that picture?
The whole idea of Mad Monday is to dress up for a laugh... or do you deny that?

If you work full time, work weekends, are married, have kids, are paying high rent, saving or payinn off a house then you have made all of those decisions yourself and you should then deal with the consequences as such -

My life is not defined by where I work or how often I work. I work as little as possible to get by and have no such ambition to put my life in debt and live excessively consumerist lifestyles..

Noone forces you to work so damn hard, that's you're own choice. If AFL players want to act like dickheads once their season's over then so be it - No different to anyone else acting like dickheads when they want to, except maybe that we won't find threads dedicated to it on bigfooty...

It's also the AFL player's choice to play football, and live within the boundaries that work creates, and be labelled a dickhead when they act stupid on the piss just like every other member of the public. There's no greater "right" or "leeway" to act stupid.

Again, I don't really have a problem with the acts and the "event" itself, just find the glorification and double standards funny.

if it was my daughter i wouldnt find it funny and i would be offended. are we seriously supposed to not dress up to not offend 1 or 2 people? so you cant dress up as a nazi? you cant dress up as a preist? you cant dress up as a murderer? you cant dress up as a black person? (apparently)

It shouldnt matter if it is fictional or not. isnt the argument of those who are offended that it isnt the costume but its the subject matter. so a fictional or real character shouldnt matter.

White people were never legally the property of black masters in the countries in which such face painting is being used as a comedic device.

I haven't seen pictures of Lisle, but personally I don't have an issue with him painting himself a darker complexion, if he's put some effort into the rest of the outfit. It's hardly the same thing as Sam Newman smearing himself with black shoe polish during an commerical break and pretending to be Nicky Winmar. Jimmy Kimmel used to regularly do a skit on his show pretending to be Karl Malone.

As a genuine satire of specific individuals, I think it's accepted and the Lisle thing would (and should) probably fall into that category. But just doing the blackface and rehashing the old stereotypes of a specific race (especially when that race has been a persecuted minority throughout history) is not ok. I think it's a pretty clear distinction.

Poor decision no doubt but I can't help but feel this whole Mad Monday thing has evolved to be nothing more than a media institution. They lick their lips every year after round 23. Obviously the players should be smart enough to realise this and going the Rolf is distasteful but it has almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy of stupidity.

Call it an end of year pissup though and is anyone even on the prowl for this shit.

I'm not on Instagram. Presumably they posted the photos to their followers (of which they may have hundreds, or more) and then shared them via other social media platforms. Would they know everyone that is following them on Instagram or Twitter and know whether any of these followers/Melbourne supporters/complete strangers have been the victims of paedophilia in their lives? I'd humbly suggest that they wouldn't have the first ****ing clue.

So from now on you should never do anything ever that might offend someone just in case it offends them ?

If you choose to follow them then you should take responsibility yourself for being offended

Blackface was originally used when people in the film industry wanted 'black' people in their film, but wouldn't employ black people, because they were black.

This is probably more of an issue in the US and the UK, but like the 'ape / monkey' jibes, people should really know better. To not know that wearing black-face, or calling black people monkeys or apes and throwing bananas at them is racist is hard to believe in this day and age.

This movie is a crime against comedy far more heinous than any racial hate crime

There are certain things that a reasonable person can reasonably predict could be offensive to a large cross-section of the public. Dressing up as a convicted paedophile and one of his victims falls into this category.

But seriously, people sticking up for blackface? Are you serious? It's ridiculous, it's completely undermining the volume of an entire race for a usually stereotypical joke or position that mocks their existence. Black people are maligned, oppressed, and in history are the ones to lose their land, their language, their culture, their history, and each other – it's not even the same to say they're being offensive to us crackas. This whole "but black people do it!" reeks of typical drivel of scumbug, common denominator, Channel 7 watching mouthbreathers in Holden jackets who hate Lumumba.
