MCG tenants on Grand Final day

So now its retreat to authority?

What a pile of poop.

The us has nfl stadiums bigger than the mcg and still holds the superbowl in stadiums far far smaller than their biggest.

That’s how a national sport is run, not just for the benefits of the fans in a single state.

there's no retreat rofl.

i do not agree the MCG is an advantage. I Agree that travelling is the disadvantage.

NFL for example

Highest Capacity Stadium MetLife which is 81,000
Lowest is Solder Field which is about 61,000

25% spread

There is no other field in Australia that can get within 25% of the MCG.

More blatant crap from you Krank.

The largest capacity NFL stadium is metlife which holds only 82k?

The smallest capacity NFL stadium is Soldier Field in Chicago, which holds 62k.

Talk about comparing apples with oranges, when you have 30+ stadiums and cities that are NFL mad and all of similar capacity it makes sense to rotate. The AFL is basically 3 cities, and one has a 100k stadium that services more than 50% of the active fans/members.

If you’re a Non Victorian team if you want to take home the cup the cold hard facts are you need to finish top 2 and hope you don’t run into a MCG tenant in the big dance.
You have to play the game of your life on GF day to have a chance

The Americans could simply use this - 115000 people.

But they dont, as its a national sport….

That is a college bowl stadium, they are just as good to visit compared to NFL IMHO.

However, absolutely zero corporate facilities, horrible for food n drinks, and as tied to colleges they usually have woeful transport and accomodation options.

The MCG ticks all those boxes, no other stadium in Australia comes close.

That is the entire premise of the GF.

Performing on the day when all the expectation is their.

Good players and teams thrive under the pressure, and mentally weak players / teams crack.

Ie the Collingwobbles, just couldnt get it done when it mattered.

Adelaide in the 90s, bog avg during H&A but lifted when it mattered. Or you have Port who consistently dominate H&A and then go to water when it matters.

Has nothing to do with the ground, as Port crumble at home too.

Teams with 3 or more games on the mcg than their opponents win grand finals at a rate of 2:1

The only box the mcg ticks is numbers.

Its an aging stadium with an aging design.

But regardless - if the nfl turned into a bunch of parochial dicks like the vfl and they used the biggest stadium in the same city every year it would soon be a 150000 seat stadium that made all of our stadiums look like toilets.

But they dont. Because home ground advantage is a real thing and that’s why every major sport in the world allows for it, as fairness in sports is something most* humans aspire to.

That’s a bit different to having to play the game of your life to win it though. Hawthorn 2013, for example, probably didn’t play all that well but managed to bring home the choccies.

Whereas the last mcg development was what? 2006 iirc?

Stadium design has taken quantum leaps in the time with people in the higher less desirable seats now having a much closer look at the action than in stadia design previously.

Actually go to the top seats at optus and your view is just different, not worse than the lower seats.

This is due to stadia designs being more upright rather than sloped back as previous designs were.

I'm not the person you're replying to, but I disagree with this statement. I love the G, but the view from certain locations isn't great (particularly in the spots in Level 1 where Level 2 seriously encroaches on the view), the phone service is rubbish, spectators are subject to the weather, and food options are pretty diabolical. Visually, it's also nothing on other new stadiums being built around the world.

It's a good stadium, but it can't compete with the most modern and up to date arenas.

Perth stadium is fantastic for the first 60k people, but pretty crap for the next 40k, those 40k get a much better view at the G.

Whereas the mcg is great if you want the attendance at every grand final to be 80+% victorians

But not a good result for the 50% of fans coming from outside victoria and an appalling result when you want to grow the game outside of victoria….

Hawthorn are perfect example

In 2012-13 they were minor premier during H&A.

In 2012 they were below par and innaccurate, they lost.
In 2013 they were on par and more accurate and won.

In 2014-15 they timed their run during H&A, managing injuries along the way to have fit list for finals, they werent minor premier in either year.

2014 and 2015 they blitzed the GF, and 2015 came off the back of an arduous travel regime in finals.

The MCG had nothing to do with them winning GFs, it was the fact they were a star team who had experienced GF defeat and were strong enough to perform when it mattered.

I'm sorry, but Hawthorn had home-state and home-ground advantage for almost all of their GFs and pretending that home advantage somehow vanishes on GF day is ridiculous. Especially given that they weren't the clear competition leaders on the way in to 2014 or 2015.

Interstate teams have a bit of a mountain to climb if playing a Vic side on Grand Final day. Sydney 2012 played the absolute game of their lives where pretty much everything went right (including Buddy forgetting his kicking boots). West Coast 2018 were playing, let's be honest, a workmanlike but willing opponent who did well just to get there.

Seems Victorians certainly can sense a s**t decision when it goes against them…

A-League chaos continues as clubs revolt over controversial grand final change

A-League chaos continues as clubs revolt over controversial grand final change

The extraordinary reaction to the A-League's decision to change the sport's grand final policy has continued with the Melbourne Victory chairman resigning from his role as a director of Australian Professional Leagues (APL).

Key points:

  • Anthony Di Pietro resigned as a director of APL due to the decision to change the A-League's grand final set-up
  • The APL is the governing body which runs the men's and women's A-League
  • The decision, which was announced on Monday, has attracted widespread condemnation
Get Sportnotifications to stay up to dateENABLE
The APL is the A-League's seven-person board and features the chairs of Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne Victory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, plus a Football Australia appointment and a representative of private equity firm Silver Lake

But Victory will no longer be part of the board with Anthony Di Pietro directly naming the league's decision to end the traditional grand final rotation policy in favour of placing the season's marquee match-up in Sydney for the next three years as his reason for standing down.

"It has become clear that in order for me to act in the best interests of Melbourne Victory and football in Victoria, I needed to resign as a board member of APL," Di Pietro said.

"My resignation was ultimately driven by the decision announced yesterday that sees the next three grand finals being hosted in Sydney.

"While I know firsthand the decision by APL was made with a view to growing the game and creating financial sustainability for the League, the fan and member sentiment has been overwhelming and I cannot support maintaining a decision which is not in the best interests of the loyal Melbourne Victory faithful and football.

"As such, together with Caroline (Carnegie, managing director), we have urged APL to pause this plan and consider an alternative that supports the growth and stability of the league while also allowing both the men's and women's A-League grand finals to continue to be played in the city of the highest-ranked qualifier."

The decision to play the next three men's and women's grand finals in Sydney has attracted widespread condemnation from players, fans and clubs alike over the past 24 hours.

Richmond won by 89 points. They kept GWS to 1 goal at half time and 3 for the match to score 25 points their lowest ever....

The MCG didn't lead to that, they had a bunch of loud travelling fans, they just completely shat the bed against a far superior side that would have won yesterday if the game was played anywhere.

We saw last year with the Eagles that if you are a better side, you will win the match.
Thing is, that Collingwood side was one of the worst top 4 sides in history.

They only beat 1 top 4 side all year. An upset in the PF.

Yep, nothing to do with where the game is played at all.

It is amazing how many people actually believe that where a game is played has anything to do with the result.

I mean seriously everyone, grow up, these are professional players, they will win no matter where the game is played.

I don’t care what statistics you can throw up about GF margins and travelling disadvantages, it doesn’t matter

And saying that every other sport can recognise this inbalance doesn’t understand that AFL is special, and isnt like those other sports, they are wrong.

Home ground advantage is a thing, but wanes the more another team is used to playing on that surface. So if a team plays the MCG a few times in the season (or more if the team stays relatively stable) then the effect should be pretty neglible after that.

But if a team has played the ground very few times compared to a team that has played it often there is an advantage. I'll try to find the link to support the above, it's an interesting read.

The main issue I have with the MCG deal is two-fold:

1) Regardless of whatever true effect size it might hold, it just represents inequality and integrity of the competition. Ie, it's a bad look for sportsmanship given the success of a team is measured on whether they lift the cup.

2) There is no minimum guarantee for each team to play a number of matches on the MCG. Every team should play a minimum of 3 games during the H&A rounds.

Sidebar, I'm not sure how it can be 'amazing' that people believe something that has been researched as fact. HGA does have an effect size. It may be overblown by some people but a simple test of its existence is in betting odds. They change depending on home and away and as the research I'm basing a lot of my comments on suggests, betting companies don't like to lose money so are a pretty good indicator of what exists or not.
