AFL Draft 2024: Top performers from Young Guns clash against Vic Country

A versatile ruckman who has dominated the Coates League has strengthened his claims to finish the year on an AFL list.
A host of overlooked draft prospects impressed in the final Young Guns mid-season draft showcase against a depleted Vic Country side.

Members of the Young Guns side were nominated by AFL clubs to compete across two matches against Vic Metro and Vic Country ahead of the mid-season intake, with most of those players being overlooked 2023 draft prospects or late developers.
The magnets were moved around on the request of clubs for the second clash on Sunday and Geelong Falcons ruckman Joe Pike and Essendon VFL forward Oskar Smartt were among those to shine in front of recruiters in their 69-point win.
Pike continued his strong start to the season with an imposing performance in the ruck and up forward, kicking three goals – two of those coming from strong contested marks – to go with 20 hit-outs, 10 disposals and nine contested possessions.
The Barwon Heads product has attracted AFL interest after dominating for the Falcons as an over-age player, with his form coming off the back of a pre-season with Geelong VFL – shaving half a minute off his 2km time trial time

Smartt, who tested at last year’s state draft combine alongside Pike, was arguably the best player on the ground as a midfielder with 22 disposals, six marks, five clearances and two goals, with his clean disposal and forward half impact standing out.

He racked up 17 disposals in an eye-catching first half before being shifted forward.

The Bendigo Pioneers export kicked four goals for the Bombers at Marvel Stadium in just his third VFL game a fortnight ago and excited in the first Young Guns contest, booting 3.2 from 12 touches.

Athletic Eastern Ranges key forward Remy MacLean was another to put his name up in lights, booting a game-high four goals – including two in the space of a few minutes – from 12 disposals and six marks.

Pike’s Falcons teammate Liam Kershaw started strongly and showcased his elite ball-use on the outside, going at 83 per cent efficiency from his 18 disposals, and also tallying eight marks, five inside 50s and five tackles.

Kershaw was among the players to catch the eye of Vic Country’s coach Paul Corrigan, who is also the coach of the Falcons, having seen him excel first-hand in his over-age campaign.

“I thought Kershaw was really good on the wing, I thought he just played his wing really well – pretty similar to what he does at Coates League at the Falcons for us in holding his channel,” Corrigan said.

“He was covering exits really well, he was also getting a lot of ball in hand, holding his width as well which was impressive.”

He was also impressed by Falcons graduate Tobyn Murray, who backed up 24 disposals and a goal in his first Young Guns outing with two goals and 12 disposals on Sunday.

A crafty crumbing goal in the first quarter was his main highlight, spending more time up forward in this match than against Vic Metro.

Murray’s energising four-goal haul for Geelong VFL in his second game helped him sew up a spot for the Young Guns games.

“I know he had a really good first game but he was very good again,” Corrigan said.

“It looks like he has developed his game even further, being part of Geelong VFL.”

Sandringham Zebras wingman Tarkyn O’Leary and Eastern Ranges forward-wingman Ry Cantwell also kicked two majors, with O’Leary hitting the target with 13 of his 16 disposals.

Bendigo Pioneers over-ager Dayten Uerata (15 disposals, three score assists and a goal), powerful Geelong Falcons forward Will McLachlan (13 disposals, five marks, two score assists and a goal) and athletic Tasmania Devils prospect Geordie Payne (eight disposals and a goal) were also lively in the forward half.

McLachlan, who burst onto the mid-season draft radar after kicking 13 goals in his first three Coates League matches, spent more time up the ground on a wing.

Vic Country was missing almost a whole side of talent with the AFL Academy match and school football games taking priority.

GWV Rebels defender Harry Charleson was among those to strengthen his chances of earning Vic Country squad selection for the national championships with 24 disposals and five rebound 50s, while Murray Bushranger Joe Berry was dangerous up forward with two goals and 12 touches.

Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Cooper Hynes won a game-high 27 disposals and six clearances, while Geelong Falcon Edan Ibbetson laid a game-high 10 tackles to go with 11 touches.

Vic Country is likely to assess the next month of Coates League matches before selecting their squad for the national championships, ahead of their first game against the Allies on June 9.

The AFL mid-season draft takes place on May 29.

WA FORWARD ON MID-SEASON RADAR

Clubs are keeping a close eye on West Australian key forward Jasper Scaife, who has quickly emerged as a mid-season draft prospect.

The 197cm West Perth product was this week named in a 34-man WAFL State squad ahead of their clash with South Australia at Optus Stadium on May 19.

That match looms as a final audition ahead of the mid-season draft on May 29.

Scaife, 20, if a former Fremantle Next Generation Academy member who was overlooked in his draft year in 2022.

He kicked 22 goals from 16 WAFL Reserves games last year, before cracking a senior WAFL debut in round 1 this season.

Scaife has gone on to average 11.8 disposals, 6.5 marks (1.8 contested) and has kicked eight goals from his first four senior WAFL matches to catch the attention of scouts.

Former Port Adelaide ruckman Brynn Teakle, who was a train-on player with Collingwood over pre-season, has also been included in the WAFL State squad after a strong start to the season with East Fremantle.

Teakle is also eligible to be selected in the mid-season draft.

The media are late onto this

Im sure i posted something here about a month ago about him before he was fashionable.

This guy has to be our MSD first pick, doesn't he? How good could he be as a full time footballer.

Mutaz El Nour (14 disposals, 100% disposal efficiency, eight marks, three rebound-50s, one goal)

“For the second week in a row, Mutaz went at 100% disposal efficiency and kicked a fantastic goal that was created on the back of his great defence. Really pleased with the way he is progressing as a footballer and a leader.”

Perfect replacement for Grimes and would allow Gibcus to be a key forward when he returns from injury
Don’t get the “grimes replacement” comment.

Are you saying replacing what grimes is now? Or what he has been to the club? Because if it’s the latter you will most likely very disappointed as Mutaz has nowhere near the defensive abilities or one on one ability that Dylan has had.

Mutaz is a great percentage taker and is a reliable kick. But his defensive abilities leave a little bit to be desired.

More of a 3rd man up interceptor type?

Although by all reports his defensive side has improved alot this year.

Essendon will pinch Mutaz, i have no doubt. However, if Scaife is miraculously available at our 1st pick, i am happy with that.
Perfect world we get this Scaife fella and maybe put a contract on Mutaz to ensure he is still there for our next pick. There is ways if we think he can make it.

I think you need to watch him
More closely , he has no problem contesting in packs

‘Contesting in packs’ is one part of defending.

I’ve watched him live in many games including when he was at Bullants, watched all four of his games this year and most of his games last year.

His ability to get involved in chains going forward out of defence has really grown and his foot skills have never been a question. Where he has been found out at times is his over-willingness to leave his man and be involved in forward thrusts, which can leave big holes behind him and has got hurt on turnover. But in saying that’s the balance has got a lot better.

I would love to see him get on the list but I just don’t think it’s likely.

He has improved this year, especially his defensive game. Maybe a chance with our 2nd pick , he could develop into a handy 3rd tall defender, playing Grimes role.

I think there’ll be better options available with our first pick which will be early.

Miller, Young, Gibcus, Brown, Tresize.
I'm happy enough with these guys being our new wave of tall and medium defenders eventually replacing Grimes, Broad, Vlastuin.
K Smith, Hugo, Banks eventually replacing Short & D Rioli.
Possibly still space for more depth defenders such as El Nour and MSD is probably the cheap place to pick one up, but not too fussed if we miss or pass.

More interested in Scaife or a speculative KPF.
Less likely to hit gold, but Bauer shows promise when uninjured, Lefau starting to look handy.
More likely to get another Bradtke but worth a shot.

Midfield - already have Sonsie, McAuliffe, Dow, Tarranto, Hopper, Ross, Bolton all (arguably) playing their best footy in the centre. Can always use more quality but don't really need more depth of the type of quality likely available in the MSD.

Those high quality midfielders will come in the end of year draft. Sounds like KPF less likely.
So, MSD look at role-players and speculative KPF.
I'm happier with Bauer and Coulthard picks than I am with Parker picks.

In addition to el nour we already have Tresize on our list who is a better defensive prospect
If Mutaz nominates we almost need to hang onto him just for his play in the VFL. 6 months only.
Tresize is looking good. See what happens to Bauer,
Bauer, El Nour & Tresize are 3rd tall defender types, we need forward depth

Yeah not likely to nab a tall forward with any of our early nd picks so might aswell take a punt in the msd on one, gonna be a similar chance to make it as a pick 40+

Be great if we had the same level of success with our 40+ picks with KP's as we did with our Flankers etc.

Jasper Scaife playing at 4.10pm this afternoon, live streamed on the AFL site for those interested in having a look at him

Only the 1 kick in the 1st quarter. They're getting belted though.
5 disposals 2 marks to half time. Peel giving West Perth a bath though.
