Mid season draft 2024

I am quite concerned that we have a recruiting guy who has come from st.kilda.
Was only their recruiting manager for the last two or three years and in that time their drafting has been quite good. Nasiah Waganeen-Milera and Darcy Wilson are a couple of good pickups that come to mind.

How Many picks do you think will be taken this mid season? with the amount of injurys surly there is bound to be more than the usual 14-16. maybe 20?

Think you’re right- around 20
5 clubs including us likely to take multiple players (lions 4 spots, crows 3)
13 clubs in total likely to participate

2019 there were 13 players taken. Only 4 of those have played any significant amount of AFL games.
M Pickett, J Noble, R Gardner, W Snelling

2020 no MSD

2021 22 players were taken. Of those 10, 11 or 12 have played a significant amount of AFL games, depending what you define as significant.
J Newcombe, A Johnson, P Parnell, N Moyle, J Peatling, S Durham, M Parker, J McEntee, J Boyd, C Sharman, D Turner

2022 17
players were taken. Of those probably 7 have played significant games or shown decent promise.
J Culley, K Dawson, M D'Ambrosio, J Carmichael, J Bauer, J Menzie, J Blanck

2023
just 13 players were taken. Of those the following have shown some promise, but still early days: R Maric, M Coulthard, J Trezise.

So we can see in 2021 there was a lot taken after all the COVID lockdowns. We were a bit stiff to be higher on the ladder than where we finished the season, otherwise we get Durham almost for certain. But there were still decent players taken after our pick.

In all 3 other msd's we can see you are probably looking at 2-3 x 100 game players at best.

Overall by far the best so far have been M Pickett, J Newcombe, S Durham, but Boyd, McEntee, Noble, Peatling, D'Ambrosio have either held down a best 22 position for an extended period or look well capable of doing so. And there are some other promising guys.

I would assume we will be looking at 2-3 players in the 19-23yo age range and unless there is someone available who just appeals as a really good player, we will be looking at guys with possible upside that the club can effectively trial for half a season and unload if they don't look like making the grade. With pick 2 just about sewn up there might be a chance of getting a ready made player, but otherwise I would think the club will be very speculative with these picks.

I suspect there will be circa 20 selections. A scary statistic is that we are running at around 1 ACL per club (on average) for the season to date (round 9), while the season average from 2017 has been 0.8. This figure doesn't include season ending Achilles and broken legs, etc, as well as the increase in concussion issues (either season or career ending).

So you're saying he has a good eye for talented wingers and half back flankers? Should be a seamless transition.

The AFL Old Boys Club is really wringing the neck of the golden goose to squeeze out every available possible dollar!
More Teams in the AFL Comp...small playing lists...means more playas thrown into the commercial meat grinder!
Does that mean the talent quota falls?!?
No way!
With FOUR Umpires the The AFL Old Boys Club can make champions out of any B grade playa with gifted frees and Brownlow votes!
Feck have to admire the AFL juggling so many balls in the air without dropping one...
Admire how the AFL control the Media narrative...
Admire how they keep the competitive nature of the AFL Comp ticking over!
Geez the wheeling and dealing must be mind blowing!

We will likely have 3 spots available

Grimes will retire prior to MSD…writing is on the wall
Juddy and Gibbo both out for the season
No point retiring off players when there won't be anyone decent left at the 3rd selection.
Would rather Grimes gets the send off he deserves at the end season. A three times premiership player, ex captain, All Australian and Jack Dyer Medallist.

We dont have enough fit players available for Grimes to retire. He isnt injured I dont think, we will run out of players.

Some good young players there to pick from. Personally I don't mind the 2 Falcons boys in McLachlan & Pike, while Hopkins Trembath and McArthur could be handy pick ups to help strengthen our back half.

Might be worth picking up the 2 Tassie Devils lads and then trading them to Tassie for 1st rounders in a couple of years.

Provided the player has the talent and work ethic and is young enough i dont think its a major issue specially with KPP

KPP usually take 2-3 years before getting a body big enough to compete so a Kid like Howes is really still a kid and if he is competing against men and is at the level then whats to lose. He may have just had a bad draft year or a late developer

Height: 196cm
Weight: 91kgs (i made this up)

Yes ... last year was his draft year but broke his collarbone then got back stress fractures ... he can lend Fawcett his back brace when he gets here lol ...

He looks a talent I like him, rumours swirling we’re looking at a VFL mid ,loath to name him as oppo recruiters are monitoring us
That makes zero sense ... Hopper will be back and Taranto will like a week away ... but with Street out the VFL side could do with stealing a mid from a competitor
