Mitch Thorp and Beau Dowler

This thread is nothing to do with Collingwood but I wouldnt be surprised if Reid and/or Rusling were put up for trade for the right midfielder or draft pick. You have to trade quality to get quality. In Thorp and Dowler's cases they'll only be considered quality for so long before their trade values drop.

Both players "trade value" has dropped significantly since being drafted, injury being the main factor, lack of opportunities contributing, 09 (at Hawthorn) will be a big year in determining the future of both.

Tim Boyle would be my pick for tradeable players who could draw interest, he's also a player who could be a very good pick-up for a club, alas, his "trade value" would be low also.

Why not? Prefer to keep Dawes at this stage but Reid and/or Rusling should be shopped. There is no way Rocca, Cloke, Reid, Rusling, Dawes and Anthoy can all play in 1 gorward line. Ditto Hawks with Dowler and Boyle. Why wouldn't you take a good price for unproven potential in a position you can't use it but for injuries?

If your're talking about Boyle i completely agree with trading him. But to trade Dowler now would be mind boggling, Hawthorn have invested a lot of time in him.

Thorp will be a real good player, once he gets one full pre-season under his belt. I have seen quite a few games down at BH oval and the guy just reaks class. Shows leadership, and is only in his second year.

Boyle is gone, IMO. I know fellow Hawk supporters wont agree with me, but he's dropped down the pecking order.

True, but at least half the teams in the AFL is desperate for key forwards. You might be surprised how other teams may value them.

Thorp is being groomed for CHB. If he plays there, that only leaves Dowler. (assuming Boyle moves on) One KPP waiting in the wings, all of a sudden we almost lack KPF's.

MW is in our current 22, and plays a different, and needed role in our build-up. So I don't know where that statement has come from. Had a serious knee injury late last year, and no doubt it has affected him.

Just looking at your surplus of forwards and asking why you shouldnt cash in on some of them while they have trade value. The arrival of Rioli has also made Williams more expendible.

Fair enuff. What about the other Beau? Is he more a mid?

Muston. Mid/Wing prospect. Had his third knee reco early this year, recovering well from all reports, but again a major set-back. You have to wonder if his knees are going to hold up, given he's only mid-20's.

I hope the club lets him develop, he would be a walk-up starter if he hadn't re-done it this year.

I'm guessing you don't watch many Hawk games then huh?

Rioli and Willo don't play the same role at all. Willo leads up the ground as a tall forward, Rioli is a crumber, through and through.

Rioli and Osborne are our small forwards, Willo is almost our lead-up CHF.

You are right on the money here sunshine

Rumors suggesting he was a FIGJAM may be true, but a few Hawk fans on here will argue that he isn't. One of the main Hawk posters (forget exactly who) said he was the complete opposite and there was even an article written which I will try to dig up that quoted him on saying how happy he was to be at Hawthorn. Will look now.

It's a fair question, and one that i'm sure will be asked of Hawthorn during trade week, my guess is that only Boyle will be shopped.
Thorp to CHB
Dowler a lead up CHF playing further up the ground allowing Buddy and Roughy to play deep.
If Thorp cannot adapt to CHB in 09 I can see him being shopped.

exuses exuses mate ha the truth hurts dosent it what about jarred brennan or harry miller if you want to bring the past??? Tambling car wreck your a dill

Pretty sure the Lions are reasonably happy with Jarred Brennan.

Luke Brennan is struggling for a game at Sydney. Perhaps the Tigers should cut their losses with a few too.

HAWKS’ Mitch Thorp is one of eight young players to renew his contract at Waverley in what is an exciting time for the finals-bound club.

The 19-year-old has played just one AFL game, in round 15 last year, and like several other young recruits he’s working hard to earn a place in the seniors at Box Hill as the platform to an AFL career.

Picked as the Hawks’ number one selection in the 2006 draft, and sixth over all, Thorp says the commitment of established players such as Jarryd Roughead is an inspiration to the young Hawks.

“To have that bunch of guys stick together you know that everyone is on the one page and everyone wants to do the same,” Thorp says.

“No one is trying to go off and earn a bit more money, they all want to stay at the club. I love knowing that guys at the club want to stay and win a flag. It gives you confidence to come to training and play. It’s great that someone like Jarryd Roughead, who might be able to get some more money somewhere else, didn’t even think about it. It’s exciting times for Hawthorn definitely.”

While it’s only natural for Thorp to yearn after that spot in the senior side, he insists that he and his Box Hill team mates are more than happy to put in the hard yards at VFL level while they wait for their opportunity.

“We just love being part of a team that’s going well and being part of a successful environment. We just love turning up to training. Our time will come as long as we work hard.

"I just try to control what I can control and if I get into the side, I get into the side. I’m just putting my best foot forward. I just want to make it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do since I can remember. So I’m doing the best I can.

"If playing at Box Hill is what I’ve got to do, then it’s what I’ve got to do. Once I get into the ones, I’ll just try to stay there.”

Thorp’s time at Waverley hasn’t been without its hiccups. He underwent a hip operation at the end of last season and three weeks ago he added himself to the list of Hawks who no longer possess appendix; Brad Sewell, Luke Hodge and Josh Kennedy have all had theirs removed as well.

“I’m a very competitive person. I find it hard to sit and watch an AFL game because I just want to play so much … I’ve had a few niggling injuries so my body needs to be right as well. I do get impatient though and sometimes maybe that’s why I get injured because I just want to train and to play. I’ve just got to hold myself back.”

While there’s always been debate about which end of the field Thorp should carry out his key position duties, he’s pretty sure where he’d prefer to be based.

“I played a lot in the forwards and the backs growing up. But I’ve certainly played my best games of footy up forward. I don’t mind playing defence -- I enjoy it too – [but] I’m hoping in my AFL career that I can be a centre half forward".

When Thorp’s not training of late he’s been watching the Olympics. With swimming one of his favourite events, there’s no doubting who his favourite gold medal winner is.

“Stephanie Rice of course,” he laughs.

“I was just saying the other day I’d love to meet her for a chat. She seems like a good Aussie girl.”

You get the feeling that if newly single Stephanie decided to give him a call, he’d be more than happy to chat.
