Mongrel - who has it who doesn't ? Does it Matter?

No one is challenging Newman award for #1 mongrel ..? makes me a tad squeezy looking at some of teh bigger lads and seeing them out mongrelled by a skinny little runt.
Also - I ignore any post that references 'flying the flag' - unless it involves at least a vicious rag doll to teh ground or a punch to the face - best fly the flag act I've witnessed in the last few years at Carlton was Williams thumping a blokes head into the ground repeatedly after they did something nasty to one of ours...that was flying the flag

p[pointing fingers or cuddling opposition like Jack and Lob do isnt mongrel - it is embarassing.

That’s why we’re 18th on the mongrel ladder
Using Pies as an example…..Maynard, McCreery, Adams, DeGoey, Crisp, Miocheck plus there’s prob a couple I’ve missed

Maynard is hard but fair- one of my favorite mongrels in the competition and I've been a big fan of McCreery for his natural Irish mongrel. Love the Irish players for that -still sad about losing Byrne and Tuohy - giving Tuohy away for peanuts was an arrogant stoopid list management brain fart- and I called it at the time and I still larf at the nuffies who made up all sorts of 'excuses' for SOS's arrant silliness regarding that 'trade'

the thing I like about true mongrels is when they can back it up with A grade skills ...that combination is the true gun.

any candidates on your list at Carlton for that ?

Was going to but not worth the argument.
Newman #1 for yappy bastard wouldn’t call it mongrel thou.
Spot on for Williams, forgot about that, that was gold 👍

Poor excuse for having no argument ! He is more than 'yappy' he stays in opposition players space and face for 4 quarters. Pity he isn't one of the most gifted players as far as skills go - but that is a different topic.

Pitto seems to “brook no bullshit” on the field & does seem to enjoy crunching someone when the opportunity arises
Yep - Pitto has a bit of mongrel - if he could jump a tad better and be a tad more mobile around the ground - no one would be talking about 'TDK'. I reckon he gets better as his knee gets back to 100% as far as running goes.

Nup, although i've always hoped that Gov could be one.

My nomination is Doc. Fanatical rehab from cancer and injuries. Plays for the jumper. Beelines the ball. Competes, competes, competes. Never gives up.
Doc is on my list as a mongrel - always has been - but the kind that gives me the irrits- because he is also "nice" He is a serious mongrel as a mid - goes as hard as anyone and kicks a goal from 55 meters out when given a chance - love him as a mid- much more than a defender.

Soz, must have skim read and missed the rock. He is a different kind of mongrel. Our more attacking game will be better with him in. He often takes the lead in taking risky kicks through the middle and pushing up to put the pressure on. Wants to win.

Not one player with that critical mix.

Love Maynard - wish he was on our list. Cotters would be my vote for 'Potential Mongrel' if he can break back into the 22.

Taking away the nasty sort of mongrel - we have a few players with enough other mongrel as well as above average skill

Charlie - he is the smiling "I've got you covered" type and he pretty much beats any defender one on one and more than his fair share two on one
Walsh' gut running and fearlessness- remember 'that mark'?
Cripps - when in the mood unbeatable in the contest often beating 2-3 on him and an elite disposal by hand which his team mates dont call on enough....
Weitering - a quiet mongrel a bit like Maynard - hard but fair ( I'd prefer a nasty FB like May for Melbum)
Hollands - gut running and fearless ( this kid is a find)

Gut runner for sure, and he goes hard when it his turn - I like that he doesn't crap his pants when taking a set shot either - other than that - a work in progress as far as field kicking and footy brain goes.

I don’t see any player on our list put their head over the ball with more intent than Saad, the pace and intensity he chases the ball carrier, closes space to spoil, tackles and runs his arse off, leaves everyone else in the shade. That’s mongrel.

In a more traditional sense, I would like a few more players that live on the line and make the opposition think twice when they are near

We need Walsh to show more aggro/mongrel on field. That's the only criticism I could give of a wonderfully talented and consistent player, but I want to see him play with a bit more anger/chip on the shoulder edge.
