Another guy that could be handy but somehow we won’t take him as atm The Eagles could take him at 1 to spite the Dockers.

If WC do take him (most likely because they rate, not to spite Freo, that's an absurd notion), then it's more of a case of we can't take him, rather than won't take him.

Myth.

They will do it out of spite and spite alone.

Other fantastic spite based decisions:

Dodoro bidding on Mosquito to make Hawthorn blink

North Melbourne drafting Trotter to deny Choco from getting the next James Hird

North Melbourne drafting Will Walker to spoil Geelong's plans and forcing them to take Tim Kelly instead

Sheedy hiding James Davies in the draft thereby forcing himself to draft him for an illustrious 0 game career

KEY FORWARD EMERGES FOR MID-SEASON

SUBIACO key forward Archer May is on the radar of a handful of AFL clubs ahead of this month's Mid-Season Rookie Draft after an eye-catching start to life in Western Australia.

The 20-year-old made the decision to move across from Victoria ahead of the 2025 season and is expected to play for the WAFL in the state game against the SANFL at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

May spent last season playing for Richmond in the VFL before signing with Subiaco, where he has booted 12 goals from the first six rounds, including 4.0 against Swan Districts last weekend after two three-goal games.

North Melbourne, Collingwood and Essendon are understood to be among the clubs with interest in the 198cm key forward, who played for the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League.

The Kangaroos have a vacant list spot with Miller Bergman doing his knee, while the Bombers could open four spots with three ACL injuries – Nick Bryan, Tom Edwards and Lewis Hayes – plus Sam Draper suffering a season-ending Achilles rupture.

The Magpies currently have one spot open after Reef McInnes underwent a knee reconstruction in March and are considering opening a second spot with Harvey Harrison suffering a setback in his recovery a torn ACL. – Josh Gabelich

Q&A; with Archer May

Archer May
Age:
21
Height: 199cm
Club From: Richmond (VFL)
Experience: Has played 30 games for Richmond (VFL), Old Brighton Grammarians (VAFA) and Sandringham Dragons (Coates Talent League) since 2022.

Firstly, what brings you to Subiaco? Why move here to play for the Lions?
As much as I enjoyed my two years at Richmond and the friendships I made, the opportunity to come across and play with one of the oldest and strongest clubs in WA was too hard to refuse! A tour of the club’s facilities in September, as well as the chance to meet the playing group, confirmed my decision. I knew then that I wanted to join Subiaco and be part of the culture and standards being driven by Beau and the team. I also believed Subiaco would put me out of my comfort zone and give me the opportunity to showcase my potential against mature-age defenders on bigger grounds.

How has pre-season treated you so far?
The playing group have really put their heads down over the pre-season. We have done a lot of work on and off the field in order to give ourselves the best chance this season. As we begin to increase our match play loads, I am excited to see the hard work paying off, and yet still see considerable room for growth as the team chemistry builds! It's a big credit to the coaches and staff who have done a mountain of work behind the scenes to ensure that the training standards are at an elite level.
From a personal perspective, I've made an effort to become fitter, stronger and faster over the off-season as I continue to improve my football skills and forward craft.

What's your favourite thing about WA so far?
My favorite thing so far about WA has been getting to know the playing group and coaches. I have developed some great relationships with my teammates, working closely with Travis Shearer and Marlin Corbett in particular. Beau and the coaches have been great to work with, and I have noticed significant improvement in my skills and fundamentals.
Coming from Melbourne, I have really enjoyed training in the heat, which has been a big challenge but a positive adjustment for my footy. I have also loved the swap from Melbourne's ‘bay’ for Perth’s ‘ocean’ beaches, and I take every opportunity to get down for a swim and sauna!

What are your personal goals for this season?
My personal goals in 2025 centre on continuing to develop my attributes as a key forward, as well as building the skill sets and versatility to play in other positions as needed for the team. And while I am confident in my own ability and work ethic, the additional work put in over the off-season and support of the club’s coaches will no doubt assist in achieving these goals.

Have you had a look at this year's fixture yet? Are there any specific games you're looking forward to?
I am relatively new to the WAFL system, so it may be a little early to comment on specific games. However, as a forward I am looking forward to some tough battles and defender match-ups.

A word from Men’s Senior Coach Beau Wardman.
The new recruits haven't missed a trick throughout pre-season. They have all come to our club with a great attitude and bought into our culture which has been pleasing to see. Prior to their recruitment, I knew each of them had a drive for success and understood how our program would make them better players and people.
Archer has been so professional, he is a powerful athlete with a penetrating kick and strong marking ability. His repeated efforts at ground level will give us a different look up forward in 2025
It has been a big move for Archie and Jarrod Richards across from Melbourne. It has shown their individual desires to get the most out of themselves and push the boundaries with their careers. I have spent a bit of time with them over the pre-season and they are both great young men. They’ve been enjoying the Perth lifestyle, the beach, the sun, and a couple of trips to Rotto as well!

I don’t mind him

But I like the look of Archie May also as a big 199cm KPF

Can impact now and long term
l would still like to see Will Dawson 2m and Finnbar 197cm continue to have a crack playing forward at the moment but if we are going to go tall then Archie May might be one to look at..

Not a fan of going key forward mid-season. Key back maybe if they think there’s one better than Pink/K Dawson. But with Maley/W Dawson/Teakle/CCJ up forward who have generally outperformed the State League key forwards available - there’s enough to work with there for the year - reassess at years end. Darlings spot is clearly locked until year end anyways. And if we’re gonna pick KPF, go someone with rawer traits with a higher ceiling like Burmeister or Caleb Lewis.

Go get a half back flanker that’s 22-25 who is right now better than some on our list.

Small/Mid Forward

Massimo Raso - on the slighter/smaller side. Kicking can be inconsistent. Played as a mid in his top age year and was never going to be big enough to be a mid at AFL level.

Jack Riding - Late bloomer, and had more of a focus on cricket. Only made his VFL debut in 2023, after a dominant season in the Ballarat Football League.

Zach Banch - didn’t come through traditional development pathways. Only made his VFL debut early last year.

Sam Toner - wasn’t in development pathways as a junior. came on the scene late in his overage year after booting 50+ goals in his local league.

Charlie Rozenes - Very inconsistent top age year in Coates League.

Frank Szekely - genuinely not sure. Has been very consistent at SANFL level for 3/4 years. Good athlete, natural footballer and can play on all lines on the ground.

Billy Cootee - on the smaller side at 178cm, maybe clubs don’t see him having much scope for development.

Great mate, thank you... always good to get an idea of why they haven't been looked at and don't get to watch the VFL games

North into Archer May

I was a fan of him in 2023 as a potential rookie when he was playing as an over ager for Sandy. Since then, his physical maturity has been impressive. He is a very natural forward with solid enough footy IQ, but he isn’t a big contested marking threat and doesn’t get much footy around the ground.

Normally I’d be excited to go after a key position player, but I feel like the likelihood of us hitting the jackpot in this MSD is relatively low. May has some developmental upside, but I couldn’t see him contributing this year.

My sentiments align with hoffseason gains 01, I really want someone who can contribute from the get go. I’d prefer a half back who can kick and defend, but you could easily make a case for a small forward, or a big bodied inside mid.
