Ok so we’re all busy trying to create a new look attack and I’m thinking I’ve got a pretty cunning strategy here.
First of all it includes upgrading Petrenko. Why? Well here’s why. The man is a gem and one of the most naturally talented players on our list. He’s had his fair share of shoulder problems but he has come back very strongly with the Eagles and of his 6 league games he’s made their best players on virtually every occasion. He has been playing the majority of his footy in defence, looking to shut down opposition small forwards as well as providing a lot of dash and carry from defence. I say upgrade him and get him straight into the team this week to play in defence. We match-up well with Port and I see logical match-ups with their four key forwards in Tredrea, Westhoff, Motlop and Ebert. So therefore who would Petrenko most likely stand? Probably a resting midfielder, such as Pearce or maybe Thomson, and I’d back him to do okay on those types of players.
But the other side to this scenario is Johncock. Time to put him forward in the absence of Burton and Porplyzia. When I look back at his stats in 2003 and 2004, I am surprised by how much of a goalkicking threat he was. He kicked 27 goals in the final 12 matches of 2003, had 6 games where he kicked 3 or more goals and 3 games with 4 or more goals. To start 2004 he kicked 15 goals in the opening 7 rounds, including 4 against Port. He has, as Craig would put it, the capacity to go forward, kick a few goals and cause some headaches. How good was his crumbing goal against the Cats in the last quarter? He has good goal sense and I believe he could expose Surjan or one of their small defenders this week.
So to summarise, it’s not as though we’re gifting Petrenko a spot on the senior list, he has been in fine form and with Burton set to join Biglands on the LTI list, there is a spot for him. Stop delaying the inevitable because he will be on our senior list at some stage, whether that be now or to start next year. Put him in defence, throw Johncock forward and see what happens. I’m quietly confident we’d come out of it alright…
