Ok so we’re all busy trying to create a new look attack and I’m thinking I’ve got a pretty cunning strategy here.

First of all it includes upgrading Petrenko. Why? Well here’s why. The man is a gem and one of the most naturally talented players on our list. He’s had his fair share of shoulder problems but he has come back very strongly with the Eagles and of his 6 league games he’s made their best players on virtually every occasion. He has been playing the majority of his footy in defence, looking to shut down opposition small forwards as well as providing a lot of dash and carry from defence. I say upgrade him and get him straight into the team this week to play in defence. We match-up well with Port and I see logical match-ups with their four key forwards in Tredrea, Westhoff, Motlop and Ebert. So therefore who would Petrenko most likely stand? Probably a resting midfielder, such as Pearce or maybe Thomson, and I’d back him to do okay on those types of players.

But the other side to this scenario is Johncock. Time to put him forward in the absence of Burton and Porplyzia. When I look back at his stats in 2003 and 2004, I am surprised by how much of a goalkicking threat he was. He kicked 27 goals in the final 12 matches of 2003, had 6 games where he kicked 3 or more goals and 3 games with 4 or more goals. To start 2004 he kicked 15 goals in the opening 7 rounds, including 4 against Port. He has, as Craig would put it, the capacity to go forward, kick a few goals and cause some headaches. How good was his crumbing goal against the Cats in the last quarter? He has good goal sense and I believe he could expose Surjan or one of their small defenders this week.

So to summarise, it’s not as though we’re gifting Petrenko a spot on the senior list, he has been in fine form and with Burton set to join Biglands on the LTI list, there is a spot for him. Stop delaying the inevitable because he will be on our senior list at some stage, whether that be now or to start next year. Put him in defence, throw Johncock forward and see what happens. I’m quietly confident we’d come out of it alright…

Is he our only option though Drummond? Is there not someone else already on the senior list that could take this spot and allow Stiffy to go forward? Just seems that upgrading a rooky who has only played SIX SANFL games is perhaps not the best option?

I'd love to see craigy do it, but while there is still potential to win games and make the finals...

The ins are Jericho, Gill and Moran.

Not Gill - please......3 weeks ago I suggested throwing some of our backmen forward - Stevens /Bock/Johncock and even Rutten.

Can Moran play in defense? Agree with Jericho but would just plant him in the square and give Tippett a bit more room up the ground. The lad needs to get his hands on the ball and can then do what Robran did - bring the ball to ground for the smaller forwards and midfielders. A tall target forward of centre may also help with our atrocious kicking in - roost it and hope for a contest instead of kicking it backwards. The first kick in doesn't seem to be as much of a problem as the 2nd kick . Although turning around and walking through a point was done - what - 3 times Saturday? Rest Maric in the forward lines - good mark and a good kick.

I reckon I could get a kick against C Cornes at the minute - their backline is shot - this is where Crows should maximise their good players.

Just a thought.......

I think I have even confused myself.....

I hope to God Nick Gill isn't selected.

We need someone who can find the ball and kick goals

Not someone who doesn't find the ball and kicks behinds.

Anyway, I agree with Drummond, i suggested the exact thing in another thread a couple of weeks ago.

Also if Basset is moved forward I will dump a truck of manure outside AAMI stadium, Basset was good in defence against Collingwood, then he got shoved forward, in the paper it said he was solid, yeah, try shit house. Either drop him, or leave him in defence, it was the first game where he actually played his role this year (aka filling the hole and taking uncontested marks). And it was good.

Bring in any of Jericho, Moran, Sellar, Walker, Hentschel (in a wheel chair) Before Gill.

can almost certainly say it won't happen
if we won't even play Walker, who is dominating the SANFL and is part of our main list then there is no chance that Petrenko will be elevated to play

i think there's a need to put Johncock to the forward line but there would be plenty of other backman that could play that role instead of Petrenko
we've got Knights, Massie, Symes, Doughty and Van Berlo

a cunning plan from you Black Adder:)
(or are you Baldrick)

I agree that Johncock should go forward Only problem then is who does our kick ins?

Walker Jericho and Dangerfield should be the ins for me. Know that won't happen but I can dare to dream.

Johncock isn't doing very well with his kick-ins of late.... but you are right, who do we replace him with? McLeod will hopefully be back soon, and he was often our alternate kicker inner. :p

I keep saying there is absolutely NO point in bringing Dangerfield in now. There is 7 weeks to go and it is also July which means his Year 12 studies are moving up a gear in preparation for exams. Let the kid finish his damn studies. This was the whole point of not having him in Adelaide this year in the first place.

I like the sound of Walker and Jericho in... maybe McLeod if he's better.

First great right up Drummond I 100% agree with you.

Now Coopers Gill wont come in. He played a crap SANFL game so if you bring him in you might as well bring in Walker who is playing better at that level.

Jerico will come in; Moran im not sure.. I would rather Petrenko

Your Showdown Strategy - Just show up. Youll win.
That would be great but I highly disagree. We have as much of a chance as winning as Port do.

A couple reasons is that at the end of the game we wont have any fit men on the bench;)

And Port seem to go 110% against us.

I reckon Port had a humdinger of a game against the Kangas on the weekend. It was tough and torrid - much like how they played against us earlier in the year. I just think they may be buggered coming into the game which might be a bonus for us.

I think we've forgotten how to play tough and torrid:o
At the risk of incoming...anyone for McGregor?

personally i think the best thing to do its to go in at 3/4 time down by 4 goals....

that'll be enough to give port a false sense of security and then you can run over the top of em!

Love the idea of Petrenko in then Stiffy forward but it won’t happen…this week. We should have one debutant already in the team this week in Walker. Any other game we might be able to handle more than one, but probably not in the pressure of a showdown. Wouldn’t be upset if it unfolded as you say but I don’t think it will.

I’d go…

In: Walker, Jericho, Moran
Out: Porplyzia, Burton, Griffin

If he’s fit then McLeod in for the unlucky Campbell, but I don’t think this would be the case. I’d like macca to be 110% fit for our charge into the finals.

Nothing wrong with Griffin’s ruckwork, but if a situation arises as it did on Saturday and we’re a couple of players down, we’re woefully exposed because Griff can’t go forward or back. Moran’s SANFL form is good, he’s quick for a big guy and play anywhere, we targeted him for recruitment so now is the time to see if the investment paid off.

Jericho is a given with Burton and probably Porps out for the rest of the season. Some might disagree with his automatic selection but we can’t bring in a stack of inexperience for this game.

Tex simply has to play. I’ve been on the “don’t play him” bandwagon but the loss of our two most potent, natural forwards demands that a potent, natural and dangerously in form forward come in. Tex is the only one, I’d be furious if he doesn’t play because it just makes too much sense. This is a selection for the future of the club, not just a patch-up like moving Stevens or Bock permanently forward or bringing a desperately out of form Gill back in.

HF: Jericho, Stevens, Edwards/Goodwin/Thompson
F: Douglas, Tippett, Walker

At the risk of incoming...anyone for McGregor?

While I think the Grug ship has sailed from West Lakes, I don’t mind the McGregor inclusion idea but the strategy has to be right. It’s interesting to note that post match Craigy mentioned him as an option to play in defence, despite us losing two forwards. I can’t see how we could make that decision without either Rutten or Bassett going forward permanently for the rest of this season.

Bass was a forward in the early days but he’s not strong enough to hold down a key position and he’s quite slow for somebody who’s only 190cm. If Walker and Jericho come in then there’s too many of those size players, and they burn pace where Bass isn’t so fleet of foot. Bock’s the logical forward option but he’s now more important to our defence than Truck.

Which leads me to…well…Truck. He’s got some natural forward instincts and he can hold down a key position, but could we do without him in defence for the rest of the season with McGregor taking the talls at FB? In the end it’s another patch-up job, he’d be back at full back next season no matter how well he went as a forward.

If Craigy seriously thinks that Adelaide can win the premiership with this squad and with such a move then all the power to him. Even in the short term Walker looks like the best option and it’s also a move for the future too.

Provided that I don’t hear the name Gill on Thursday evening I reckon I’ll be happy. Our selections this week, more than ever, will say so much about Craigy’s vision and the direction of this club. Read that sentence again without getting chills…

Oh yes what a wondrous plan.

Lets bring in Mcgregor to play defence, that'll solve our forward line problems, just like bringing in Campbell and Griffin did against Collingwood, oh wait, no it didn't.

Next I suggest we bring in Hentschel and play him as a rover, and re-draft Benny Hart back in the side to Play full Forward.
