How I hope that the footballers don't read Big Footy. So nasty, such idiotic comments, so cruel in the end. Most of us (none of us?)have not played AFL footy, wouldn't have a clue about what it takes and the work that has to go into remaining at your peak nor would we be able to withstand the public scrutiny that follows.
Nathan played at Geelong because Costa talked him into it and some say with the promise of a house for his mother.
Nathan is very talented, we saw that for several years , but in my opinion lacked in his younger days that mongrel, white line fever(remember his summersault over a player at KP one afternoon, instead of falling into him, so displayed what some of you describe as lazy.
Hope he gets his chance again, seems a nice person and does have talent.
For the rest get over using this as a reason to bash Gary Jnr yet again. Take note of what Brian Cook told the Canberra Cats not two weeks ago ' Gary left because of Mark Thompson'.

Interesting that KB was just suggesting that he has a conspiracy theory that Geelong have had a word to NAB and told him to go into the draft.

The reason for his theory was that like many here, he couldn't work out why he had nominated when he's never seem interested.

He made the comment that someone must have prodded him into nominating.
Now without knowing NAB at all I would think that would not be the best way to go about it.

I mean who wouldn't jump back in if there was 150k on offer and you had nothing better to do?

On the other hand if it's NAB who has made the approach then it's a whole new ball game.

I've had a think about it and there could only be a slim chance that we'd take him. A lot of stars would need to align.

Firstly we'd need to have severe doubts over Mitch Browns body standing up.
We'd have to make the assessment that Pods only has a year left.
And we'd have to be convinced that NAB has the right attitude and will get supremely fit quickly.

Because we have to find a way to get Vardy into that team first. And I'd be putting more effort into Vardy than Ablett.

The other question is. Does Ablett suit modern footy? I always thought he was slow off the mark, and I'm not sure you can get away with that now in the forward line.

Hence, Rookie/ VFL, WAIT , SEE, ENJOY. No risk

Would think the last thing the Cats should do is 'prod' him to nominate for the draft. That's what got them in trouble in the first place. When it all gets too hard he'll just say the club pushed him into nominating when he didn't have his heart in it. You know it will happen!

So it's ok for folks like yourself to sit in judgement of a persons character, purely based on what you've seen of him playing at a football club, yet when I come in and say you don't know the half of it i'm out of line because I won't divulge all of the information?

The only reason I brought it up is to illustrate that perhaps before those of you sinking the slipper into the lad about his footy career and by extension the man himself, you might want to consider that you do not have all the facts in front of you.
Voicing ones opinion openly and transparently about someones attributes or otherwise is the lifeblood of forums. It gives others the opportunity to either agree with you or unpick your views. And Mods to step-ip when it's heading towards defamatory or just over the top.

It's quite something else to claim being told something in confidence, tell all and sundry you know something (personally in this instance) they don't but won't reveal it. That sort of thing causes rumours and innuendo and does the person you are attempting to support no favours. Which is why I queried a post and possibly why Turbo added a word of caution. The two things are quite different. Surprised you can't see it. Or the meaning of the word confidential for that matter.

Did anyone else hear Moons on the radio earlier?
Said that he still maintains that NAB is the biggest waste of talent that he has seen. Reckons that he could have been better than all of them but just didn't want to do the work.

Said that maybe the penny has dropped but he can't see anyone taking the risk as it would probably just end up being a waste of time.

he had an abundance of natural talent, that much was obvious, just didnt have the application.

When he finally got a game for GC he seemed more desperate & willing to work, shows commitment that he's willing to more from the GC to get another chance

Link to the Mooney interview with Hawf.

Comments about Nathan are towards the end of the interview

Agree , the natural talent and the physical attributes are all there to see - and what a tantalising prospect as he is taller than Senior with the prototype Ablett build. If only he had Juniors dedication and Seniors touch of mongrel..........

Always prone to the big statement is Moons. Looking forward to his media work next year. A slightly more considered Aker perhaps, maybe, possibly.........

He didn't hold back. If there were other personal issues with NAB, then Mooney was a little harsh.

What he said could apply to many failed AFL players though. Saying what everyone thinks in these situations really.

He wasted far too much development time kicking back when he would/should have been in the gym developing his body, for the rigors of AFL footy that a KKP would undergo.

"Ahh, too late, too late". He cried.

Can Nathan still be pick up in the rookie draft?

A club might make him earn a senior spot the hard way and see if he really 'has it' before gifting him a senior players pay packet.

Who said it was confidential? I wasn't sworn to secrecy I can assure you. But as the information has not become public since I was told in 2005, I am using my own discretion to not put it in said public forum to be dissected.

It's one thing to express an opinion, it's another thing to indulge in character assassination, something Nate has fallen victim to in this thread. It's really not important that those who want to get stuck into him know exactly what the issue is. If people want to start rumours, they will. If I said what I know, that would probably start a different set of rumours anyway. I said what I said as my polite way of telling people to pull their heads in. But if I say only that, i'm just going to be told i'm looking at an Ablett through rose coloured glasses (who was it who said that to another poster?), and to pull my own head in. Eventually I either step back and let the 'haters' have their way, or I can tell them what I did, that they don't know the full story, and if they did, they might think a little differently about the situation. Again, if people want to speculate they can. They already were before I opened my mouth, and whether I reveal the truth or not, they will continue to.

Besides, the post that started the big shitfight in this thread was completely misread by the poster who went off his trolley and had nothing to do with anything I said. And was TC saying careful to me, or the poster who thought he was being a funny ****?

Anyway, you can think what you like about me, and Nathan Ablett, i'm not saying anything more than I have. I don't see why it is necessary.

Can't resist!

Back on track : the recruiting of Kersten makes the chances of rookie-ing NAB less likely.
pity that if true, I like what Mooney said about NAB, and he has insight we don't have, "could have been THE BEST of the lot ". Didn't have the desire , but maybe has woken up and on that basis, a rookie spot at Geelong would be what I'd like to see. Our rookie spots are not that precious that an Ablett can not get back into our fold, surely??

I think our rookie picks are quite important this year. It would still be nice to get a project ruckman and a key defender (either a mature pick, or someone like Boseley). I obviously have to defer judgment, but I think we have far greater needs than key forwards now and there are players out there who may be able to address those needs. I'd like to see Ablett get another chance, but just don't think it will be with Geelong. There's no way they would have put that article on the website if they were considering him.
