Can Paine captain and keep? I've heard it's difficult to do. If not, Bailey would be a good choice. Hell, it wouldn't shock me if Wade was parachuted in long term.

My worry with Paine is that if Carey continues his trajectory it is going to get awkward with the captain potentially not earning his spot.

I was revolted when JL floated his name as a potential future Australian test captain. Turns out he was nostradamus. I need to pay the gnome a bit more respect, I think.

What would be the more incredible situation?

1) A player gets suspended for a match for off-field behaviour, flies home from the tour, then is reinstated for the following test and made captain.
2) A player isn't even playing for his State (to allow a teammate a chance to get back into the test team), then over the course of the summer is promoted to the national side and ends up as interim captain.

Seriously. This is crazy stuff.

Also our youngest ever Captain Ian Craig. Went from the youngest Shield double centurion to retired at 26 averaging under 20 in 11 Tests arguably due to being made Captain.

Bring Carey in to keep and let Paine be batsman only. Carey is a excellent team man and competitor in the mould of Gilly.

I'm not entirely sure you can squeeze Bailey in solely to captain. He's nearly 36 and hasn't set the world on fire this season. Cameron White would be a better option. Only a year or so younger but has at least been batting well in the Shield.

Not sure Bailey would take to the idea either (remember his speech at the AB medal on prioritising his young family).

He's too old for this shit in more ways than ability.
