So could every other team with a pick ahead of us at whatever round he's assessed at talent wise unless we're prepared pay big overs pick wise.

It's not out of the realms of probability that come draft time he could be spoken of in the same discussions as Ugle-Hagan was last year given their game style likeness and the early promise shown.

Just because we don't have matching bid ability doesn't mean we have no chance of getting him. We still could potentially get him with our first pick.

That we could but it's a real bummer that the 1st time we look like possibly having a truly elite talent come through either our NGA Academy or Father/Son option thanks to the VAFL it's taken away. Of course it wasn't brought in when the Dogs had a free hit an elite talent matching wise...

That's not the point. We should be allowed priority access. I imagine if we were port in this situation we would be jumping up and down.

Unfortunately with the number of recent high academy picks there were going to be teams who will miss out with the rule changes.

Unfortunately we are one of those teams, don't think there's anything that can be done.

If our club any balls we would be having an argument in the media over this

Meanwhile Sydney, GWS, GCS and Brisbane continue getting sole access to their Academy lads....and haven't they done well out of that.

Yeah it's bullshit.

I did hear at first the clubs were trying to push for, any player who was already in an academy before the rule changes were announced should still be able to have bids matched.

What happened to that?

It's not an unreasonable request.

I really like the idea of trading out next year's first round pick and getting an extra first this year. Aiming for two of Horne/Roberts/Draper.

If we could match Keeler it would still leave us effectively with a first rounder next year.

I actually can picture Olsen talking about how unfair this is.

The conversation would have to start now for anything to happen.

There is literally no point in doing it, the AFL have effectively blown the whole thing apart for the majority of clubs.

Teams that have benefitted with top end talent with father son or NGA. Only other club that has struck out like us is St Kilda.

And here I was thinking we were getting academies like Sydney not going the other way.

Don’t worry they will realise their mistake and when the Vic clubs finances bounce back they’ll lobby the AFL to reinstate NGA rights to all players... after we’ve missed out on Keeler 😢

I’ve never understood the thinking that academy picks for all clubs water down the draft. Sure early on when the pot luck aspect of the zones allowed clubs to benefit without putting any investment into the player’s development.... but just as it was becoming a reward for developing players who had been in these squads/academies for a number of years and clubs who had invested in these players were about to benefit the AFL change the rules.

The time for questioning it has passed and they’ll never change it to allow us access once a player like Keeler is on everyone’s radar. (Much like they didn’t change our Father/Son access when Gibbs was in play for Pick 1).

At the very least, the clubs who were yet to match a bid on a top 20 talent should have had access to matching rights for one kid already in their academy over the next two years. This would allow clubs to adjust budgets etc... for the academies to better reflect the chance of only landing a late 2nd Round/Early 3rd Round prospect.

The AFL have completely muffed NGA’s while retaining the Northern Academies with the new rules but it’s the clubs let it happen. It was a golden opportunity that the AFL squandered because they didn’t want to prop up the poorer clubs in this area.
