Sam Pepper Powell is exactly what we need right now, if we had him we would be closer to a premiership.
It's looking like a huge and inexplicable miss. Seriously, you have to feel for Venables. He could turn into a very good player and the fans will still question his selection.

Nearly all clubs bypassed SPP and in hindsight they shouldn't have. Certainly has the strut about him and gave a bit of chat and stir to Fyfe and Lachie Neale.
Definate campaigner but likeable and harmless unless your playing on him.

Reckon Venables is still a good pick , has good speed and height which could set him apart in the future.

Edit

You just know that he wont feel totally at home and comfortable until he is home ...., that could be at West Coast probably at a cost though !!

What's becoming apparent is the 2016 draft was a very strong one. Off the top of my head McGrath, Florent, SPP, SPS, Haywward, Ainsworth, Taranto and Simpkin have all debuted and performed well. Some very well

Further it makes it abundantly clear why clubs were unwilling to trade picks and why the likes of Mackenzie weren't attracting much interest from rival clubs

"PEPPERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!"

What's so inexplicable about it?
He was very much under our noses, having trained with us and everything. There was just a sense of destiny about it all, from the position of our pick to the fact that his traits screamed out as what we needed the most. He played for East Perth too. It just made sense.

I was a big advocate for SPP pre-draft so I'm not trying to come across as a hindsight hero.

I also like Venables and think he'll be a good player. Will he be as good as SPP? We'll see.

I feel like if we had picked a player based on this criteria it would have caused great uproar (and rightfully so). I'd like to think we will always look broadly with our selections and it shouldn't matter if they had trained with us. SPP did have those traits but it wasn't obvious that he was going to turn into a gun (he could still flop).

That being said, I'm not necessarily saying we shouldn't have taken SPP.

So if, and I concede it's very much an if, Venables becomes as good or better than SPP is it still an inexplicable miss?

SPP is playing just like I thought he would, it should be no surprise to our recruiters

I'm disappointed we didn't draft him but equally as excited at what Venables will bring once he gets up to speed

Anyone who followed the draft at all knew that SPP was always going to be AFL ready with the body he was carrying. His predicted ceiling is below most players taken in the first 2 rounds.

To reiterate: The sky is NOT falling.
Haha his predicted ceiling? Did you watch the game today? Guy is a gun already.

Well, my opinion is that he won't, but I understand that it is ridiculously early to make that call. I'm happy to leave it there and revisit it in a few years. I very much look forward to watching Venners play WAFL league this year and snare a few games at the back end of the season. He's clearly talented.
