North Make Godfather Offer To Kelly

They changed the rules last year. Now each club can only take the same amount of picks to the draft as they have free spots on the list.

But if you take 6 picks to the draft with 6 spots on your list, and use 4 on a FS where do you find 3 more players to fill spots on your list?

can we just take/upgrade rookies?

Not sure - usually you would do that with your last remaining draft picks but if you're only allowed a certain amount not sure how that might work. PSD maybe?

Rules have changed since then though
There is some slight misunderstanding here. You can only use "live" picks for bidding purposes. So you can't trade for 5 second/third rounders when you have only 4 list spots and use them all to match a bid(s). But if you go in with 6 list spots and 6 (points worthy) picks and bids wipe out most of them (or all the ones worth points so you take a deficit into next year) you can still fill the empty list spots with picks at the end of the draft or PSD (your preference).

This seems like they're selling the farm list wise because they "can't afford to bottom out" (something we heard last time around the Laidley era).

Where exactly is this being said except inside your head?

The Bulldogs don't land on bont and the bombers don't land on Merrett by mistake.

And we didn't just find Brayden Preuss wandering around in a car park on the Gold Coast and offer him a few grand to bash Victorians for fun.

Well, we did.

But we still had to use a rookie pick to get him. The draft is not an exact science.

Preuss looks like he'll almost make goldy expendable by next season at this rate.

And there's lots of ways to get talent.

We might have to give GWS a great deal to get Kelly.

We also gave them pick one zillion for Paul Ahern, who was pick 7 and could well turn out to be a gun.

Best of luck to both parties if true, s**t timing though.
I hate to think AFL is going the way of Channel Nines wholly owned advertising vehicle, Rugby League trading players a few weeks into a season.

Yep, a monster pre-season from The Minotaur - he struggles to run out games - and he's going to be quite the player next year.

This is why people talking about North being in a full rebuild are talking through their Nat King Coles. We have the core of a quality team there in good players, we need icing on the cake, that the likes of Kelly can provide.

+1

Aherns interesting and mihht be the line between humane treatmemt of players and the cold logical drafting business.

We rarely delist and most of our outs are trades in one form or another.
Ahern is a good mid who's had shocking luck with injuries. He was close to playing for us a number of times but never made it beyond travelling emergency.

You guys get a cheap throw of the dice but have to nurse him through the rehab and hope he'll deliver oit the other end. Imagine his contract wont hurt much at this point either.

We get to reduce our list as required, from a player with no immediate prospect of playing due to injury.

Ahern gets the security of a club system that has an impressive record of getting the best of players.

No downside I can see.

I think a mega deal for a key position player is risky but probably worth it seeing as the time and investment to just get a mediocre one can be quite large, especially when as established a superstar as Buddy Franklin is on the table. Kelly though? Really? Am I taking crazy pills here?

Not in my head, said by your former coach and your supporters

Coach Dean Laidley believes the Kangaroos will wither and die if forced to bottom out and rebuild with young players, as are the Hawks.

His concern is that the Kangaroos simply wouldn't attract enough fans through the turnstiles to remain viable.

The coach may be right.

He was probably trying to justify trading in Jonathan Hay, Mark Powell, Daniel McConnell and Jade Rawlings 6 months prior. Trading worse than anything Richmond has put up.

Laidley had a foot on the beach up Gold Coast ways, so grain of salt.

Times have changed and there would definitely be a lot of sooks and flogs rambling about how many pet members their own soulless club has but North would survive.

What can North expect in return for Goldy? Seems as though Preuss is almost preferred at the moment? Given Preuss was picked up for very little surely decreases Goldy's value?

Cant see why Goldstein wouldnt become a ruck/gun forward in a team without Ben Brown, Daw, Waite, Wood and the soon to be best ruckman in the game (Preuss).

Goldstein is a phenomenal shot at goal, decent contested mark, good tackler, good decision maker and a great endurance athlete. Still only 28.

If not for Ben Brown (and to a lesser degree Majak), Goldstein/Wood/Preuss could work very well. North don't have enough speed across the board and play far too much boundary line to make land of the giants work.

Goldstein is a great alround package in a ruckman/forward and it's only the immovable giant freak that's close to the best ruckman in the game (after 3 games) that's putting his position in jeopardy.

If Preuss proves durable, he will be top 20 league wide in a few years.

Away from Norths giant forward line, Goldstein could kick 35 while taking 90% of the hit outs at another club. Has 4-5 years left in him but hope he can make the transition to 70% full forward at North rather than tearing it up for another club.

Yep if you can find him some ACL. You made like bandits there...

Some quite good players have had serious injuries early in their career and come good.

Preuss will be a "top 20" ruck in an 18 team league that is fast moving towards playing a sole genuine ruck and spelling them with a forward? Not exactly a glowing endorsement.

Big ask for Goldy to become full forward, probably be pretty similar type to Ben Brown as a key forward if everything pans out, and no guarantee it does.

He meant top 20 player. Period.

Even by your standards this is mind boggling.

Not really.

I've long been of the opinion that ruck is far and away the least important position on the ground. Makes sense that this is notionally North's biggest position of depth, whilst you are currently winless. Clubs seem to be fairly reluctant to give up capital for rucks, and as I've said above, now more than ever the league is trending towards playing one genuine ruck, and then having a mobile/undersized forward as a chop out. You can get 80-85% of Goldstein for maybe a third of the cost, and give up far, far less draft capital than North will want for him. North have proven it themselves this year.
