Player Watch Pick #14 (2019) - Miles Bergman

NWM is rated higher because he is a vastly superior offensive player to Bergman and it is far more eye catching. Bergman's defensive ability is invaluable to us so you can't really compare them directly. I doubt structure wise it would be a direct replacement in our best 22. NWM would likely push out someone like Sinn or Farrel and Bergman would be replaced by a more aerially adept player like Walsh.
Considering Rozee is possibly down there now, the back flanker position is choc full.

You don't say not to Nasiah especially with connections to two of our better young players but I would want to trade Bergman and say Sinn for Nasiah and a young third tall.

Of course you’d prefer to keep Bergman whilst acquiring NWM, but let’s not kid ourselves, NWM is comfortably better.

And I do rate Bergman highly.
I wouldnt say better tbh. 2 very different types of players, NWM cant do what Bergman does and vice versa. Depends on what you value higher. I'd argue in our team, that Bergman is more important to us than NWM. Especially if Rozee does what he did last night, in which case we already have a certain version of NWM and perhaps better if he can also bring some defensive stability.

Bergman would be the ideal replacement for Wines. As great as Miles has been as that third tall/interceptor, he does often have to play taller and sometimes on bigger and stronger bodies. He is the modern day midfield prototype with his physique.
Yep. I remember seeing him and thinking he had the same profile as Fyfe.

He'd offer a lot more around the ground than Wines, Drew and Mead and he's a big body who loves to take a crack.

It's a bit criminal he hasn't had a crack in there.

After the failed Durrsma experiment, Bergman to the wing was as ambitious as Daddy has been… Rozee to half back seemingly out of the blue screams it was someone else’s doing. Agree I would love Burgman to have a look as a Centre Square mid, but don’t try and change his body, let’s see how he plays in there as an athletic Mid. Wines/Drew, Mead/Burgman, JHF/Butters could be a formidable onball brigade for the next 2-3 years.

This is what I want to see Wines out of the Midfield and Bergman in.
2026 Butters JHF and Bergman in the middle sounds perfect.
? Is who replaces him down back BZT?

Any chance we can hold both butters and Bergman? That would be a good result if it happens. Yeah it will cost us but we should have enough space.

I still think butters needs to remain our priority and if there was a salary cap squeeze that we aren’t aware of I would much rather Bergman left than butters.

This bergman mid stuff i dont see being succesful (very happy to be proven wrong) , i think he is way more valuable down back.
He definitely is but if he's thinking about going home, you have to see what he can do in the midfield.

Worst case scenario, you bump his price up.

Bergman into the midfield would make sense if we had coverage down back but sadly we don’t. You need that hybrid defender that can play tall and small and our defence is already very vulnerable, leaking easy goals regularly.

I have some concerns offering Bergman an ultra long-term deal. His body constantly let's him down and I think it's been said that he is on a modified weekly training program for the rest of his career to manage his chronic injuries. Hence why it was reported that he was just walking laps at training last week.

You're right, no doubt but what gives me the irrits is that Bergman has more athleticism and skill than Wines, Drew and Mead combined.

Given the poor list management with our tall backs, it is important that he plays that role that just about no one else on the team can. However, he could be a great midfielder and won't get the chance, not because he's got the potential but because of 1. poor list management 2. Wines, Drew and Mead are one dimensional 3. Bergman is multi-dimensional.

I guess I just want to see what he can do in the middle as opposed to a few of the plodders in there.

Whatever program he has been on has been working. He's only missed 1 game since the start of the 2023 season.

I agree, see what he can do. He's more valuable down back, and we need him there. But if we need a point of difference in patches in some games, he might be the answer.

But can he ruck 😂

I don’t think the difference is that great and in terms of our club might actually be the other way

For our defence Bergman is vital he’s far and away our best defender and our only true one grab defender.

Unfortunately he’s irreplaceable in defence.
