Pies/GWS pick trade

Reckon your draft team could say yes fast enough when their phone rang last ND, but swapping a couple of mid range picks for a teens pick has turned to absolute gold, another gun coming your way for (almost) free :)

Brings up an interesting question. Which side suggested the trade?

If it was GWS what were they thinking when they offered Collingwood such a lopsided deal, were they basically just trolling and not expecting Collingwood to actually go for it, or was it Collingwood and if so how many seconds did it take for GWS to say yes before Collingwood realised that maybe trading while high was not the best idea.

Imagine the faces on GWS recruitment team when the Pies suggested the pick swap.

They should do a documentary on it.

I think a little bit of wee would have come out

You would have to think the Pies suggested it.

They probably thought they would be top or near top of the table.

Giants probably took 4 seconds, 3 of those in stunned silence taking it all in. Then trying to act all professional “if you think that’s fair then ok sure it sounds reasonable”.

How could they think that though as Collingwood finished a very unspectacular 8th last year and they were set to lose 3 best 22 players. Surely it was obvious they were not going to be going up the ladder the following year.

There is no other way I can think it happening unless the entire trade team went “* it I’m bored in this job”.

From a draft points perspective the trade was - pick 24, 30 and a future 4th - that is equivalent of pick 9 in draft points. That probably aligns with Collingwood expectation, a mid table 6-12 type finish.

GWS plenty of kids, so they happy to take a flyer on getting top5 prospect in 2021 if Pies fell away....which has happened.

Pies already getting a top5 or top1 prospect in 2021 (Daicos), and would have been forecasting that would be matching any bid with a glut of late picks just like the Dogs did when they used six mid round picks to match a bid on JUH at pick1.

It would be an almost fitting final note to the car crash fire sale if Pies end up finishing last and have given up chance of getting a pick 1 AND Daicos.

Still think Pies will avoid spoon, and can finish 14th, so give up pick 5....not even in the same ballpark as giving Treloar/Stepho away for nothing.

The other hilarious part of this that shouldn’t be forgotten is that Collingwood only hold 1600 points in the 2021 draft. If Daicos receives a bid at pick one they are short the equivalent of a late first round draft pick.

Either more players are going in a fire sale or they have also lost their 2022 first round pick.

They still have salary cap issues and need to tip another player out.

Plus last year when you consider the Stephenson trade and what they gave up to get Treloar and Beams, that represented five consecutive first round picks walking out of the club (they gave up two first rounders each for Beams and Treloar).

It's probably the worst trade period any club has had in AFL history

We'll flog Hawthorn and it'll be a non issue.
Even if you do you'll have given up pick 3 or 4 for peanuts. If you held onto it you could have easily got more in return this trade period.

At least they have their black and white stripes

And based on form this year, it wouldn't surprise if the Pies come out and beat WC this week and jump up to 14th anyway and then the whole premise of the thread doesn't matter anyway.
Pies up to 14th...can they keep building.
Macrae and Henry played well again.
Oh well, back to the Tim Kelly trade being hopeless I guess.
