Who on earth would take him? I don't care if he's West Coast Judd and we get him for free, no thanks.
I think if a club trusts their culture enough to turn him around they might undertake the task. But I wouldn’t want him either, seems too far gone and not a good look to be the club that takes him.

At what point do the AFL just say “Hey North, we’ve given you enough concessions, staff, leg ups and you never come close to even being competitive. It’s time to shut the doors”
There's no point bringing in any logic to why North should stay.
  • They aren't one of the initial VFL clubs for the history.
  • They have the smallest support base of the VFL clubs.
  • They don't bring viewers for TV / other rights due to above, so they are a cost drain.
  • North out of the AFL would have zero impact on the number of kids taking up Aussie Rules in Victoria.
  • With Tasmania coming in, them still remaining ensures the talent pool is diluted further and we get a team having a bye every week.
The problem is all that is outweighed by the Vic clubs wanting to maintain a majority, for all their cushy deals with the Grand final, best fixtures, 'good bloke' discounts, compliant media concentration etc. etc. We're in a shitty catch-22 that North will keep getting help, until we don't have majority Vic clubs, but we won't stop having majority Vic clubs, until North stops getting help.

We had a good haul in that draft (obviously) but getting to look at it like this and realising we got two of the three best players with picks 5 and 12 is insane. I tend to think Duursma would be around the edge of this list which was also a solid pick at 18 and even if we don’t have him, we turned him into something tangible and useful. Would be criminal to not win a flag with these blokes now.

It will be interesting to see how Duursma goes over the season.

He could always play but a combination of the rubbish game plan at Ports (which basically bypasses the wings) and some ill-timed injuries, I don’t think he ever got to consistently show his true potential.

Such a tragic event. Hope he comes through ok. :(

Apart from the obvious question (why do it?), and the probably obvious answer to that, I would suggest asking where was the club's duty of care for its' players, due to not knowing the whereabouts of said player until the next day when boarding the bus? :madv1:

And why didn't his player mates sound the alarm much earlier? :embarrassedv1:

Shades of J Mac's horrible demise all those years ago. :sadv1:

And, you would have thought, so easily preventable (or at worst, so easily identified he was missing and found him much earlier, with an increased chance of a better survival rate).
Yeah it’s very sad but you can’t hold these guys hands 24/7.
He has a responsibility to himself and whatever was the reason behind him losing control it fairly sits on his shoulders.
Hopefully he’ll make a full recovery and learn something from this experience.

Sunday night I was watching the late Channel 9 news and an AFL blast from the past turns up being involved in the criminal trial of Donald Trump, for paying off pr0n (BF auto editing) star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet during the 2016 election campaign.

Do people remember the 2007, late in the season, personal medical files, re illicit drugs in the gutter case??

Channel 7 reporter Dylan Howard reported a story about two player's medical records and the confidential details of their drug use as part of the AFL's monitoring illicit drugs testing regime.

Howard paid for the info from a couple, think they were in rehab, who said they found the files in the gutter.

The AFL and AFLPA went into overdrive and got an injunction in the Vic Supreme Court for all media to pull the story as well as all details of the players and which club they played for. The incident ran on Big Footy for a few hours before the court injunction ruling, then every thread and post about it was removed from here.

The AFLPA and individual player club delegates basically declared war on the Seven Network, and refused to deal with any of their reporters. The finals were a couple of weeks away and 7 were in a quandary. Dylan Howard was pulled off all footy stuff and when his contract ended just after the footy season ended it wasn't renewed. He was basically sacked and put into purgatory.

The AFL along with the court injunction lent on all accredited media to bury the story not just for the now but for all time. The couple that stole the player files from a rehab centre, were arrested and charged. I can't remember what happened to them in the courts.

Howard couldn't get a job in Oz as a reporter, he was basically blacklisted, so he goes to the US where Craig Hutichson's then Crocmedia's USA arm gave him a job. Hutchy obviously felt for Howard as he had gone thru something similar in 2004.

In 2004 Hutchy was working for 7, there was a sexual misconduct allegation/case involving a couple of Saints players and Hutchy said Justin Koschitzke and Milne had been interviewed by police when they had not been interviewed. The 2 players involved were Milne and Montagna and charges were never laid.

Hutchy was sacked, wasn't going to get a job in AFL so off he went off to USA for a couple of years to do stuff with his Aussie mate who was in the media industry, he got wowed by the US sports and media market and couple of years later formed Crocmedia with his mate and with Dr Turf, he had done his penance and set about building a media empire as he was obsessed at the the time trying to copy Eddie McGuire with his McGuire Media / JAM TV. Crocmedia was relatively small fry, but the merger with SEN has allowed him to build his sports media empire.

Howard got involved in tabloid media in US, working at various places, then became managing editor/director at American Media Inc, which owns among its stable of publications, The National Enquirer magazine, which its owner David Pecker paid for stories to protect Trump in what is called - Catch and Kill - where they paid people for stories/info then protected Trump by not publishing them. Howard was involved in this, but it was directed by Pecker to pay for the stories and kill them.

David Pecker - not quiet a case of Nominative Determinism - but an appropriate name for someone involved in a sex scandal case.

Here is Alison Piotrowski's story on 9 Sunday night. There was another Aussie journo Lachlan Cartwright working at the National Enquirer who is the whistleblower and is interviewed in this story.

Howard may have to give evidence in court over the matter.

RussellEbertHandball, I'm actually serious. I still don't think we were an order of magnitude worse than Geelong that season. Considering we beat that mob on their home ground only a matter of weeks ago.
No it wasn't Geelong, and it was about illicit drugs and nothing to do with PEDs. The files I'm pretty sure were stolen from a drug rehab clinic.

A Tale of Two Cities - Perth had The Mickelberg Stitch and an investigative journo called Avon Lovell, while the AFL had the Medical Files in the Gutter affair and a fella called Dylan Howard

Was the copper who went after them very hard for years, the detective who was blown up when he turned on his car switch one morning, in the driveway at home??

Yes - Lovell wrote another book about that. Similar to Dylan Howard he was blacklisted in his job, but a bit more of a life and death case for him, he had to 'disappear'.

POV, Josh just took an uncontested mark

lol is that the arrow?

Why are you doing the arrow against GWS? It'd at least be decent trolling if you did it against Port or Essendon. This is just being weird.

Why can't they just use the Crows facility that is already there? Surely with a bit of a re-fit they could make that work for what they need. Might need to find a temporary home before the Crows move out, but that shouldn't be too hard. Wouldn't be any worse than the facilities they're currently in at Thebby...

Was there anything about the Geelong Football Club by any chance?
Haha. I remember from the time any posts identifying the club got deleted, to avoid any legal hassles for BigFooty. I'd assume that is still applying. I remember which club it was, though I can't remember the players anymore.

What amazes me about all of this, is the assumption that Charles Sturt Council should just roll over.

No they shouldn’t.

  • The Thebarton development is not in their council so does not influence their decision making.
  • The proposal goes against their planning rules, hence why they rejected it.
  • The SANFL is no longer a major land own in their council. They sold the land to a developer for $71m and developed Thebarton. They are trying to have their cake and eat it as well.

The treasurer has really not back a good one here. His complaining about council looks petty.

C7 news is a lot more optimistic as they say it only needs residents approval for the SANFL to move back to West Lakes. No problems regarding this poll and it should be done & dusted by June ! But it’s only Channel 7. By the way the SANFL wants to spend millions down there also.

This is brilliant - thank you.

Don’t know if you ever listen to the sounding board but the 30 minute mark in this pod (back in 2021) about Dylan Howard now makes a lot more sense.
