Maybe, but the game I'm thinking of was definitely magpies Palmy at the coast. Big Hamill had to get carried off late. I'm pretty sure it was the year we were ****en horrid which would make it 08

Yeah, was 08 at Broady. Hammers did his ankle late. Luke Scott had a set shot to put Pies in front and had to wait while they took him off, and ended up missing a pretty easy shot.

Ball went up the other end, then came back and he snapped a beauty for the match winner out of a pack.

We were down by 40+ points in the 3rd quarter.

Is playing the Granny at Metricon out of the question?
I doubt there would be enough crowd to create a great atmosphere but it gives allot of players an opportunity to play on an AFL oval.
Be a thrill for reserves players too, just a thought.

The women could play there granny on the smaller outside oval around the same time as the Under 19's prior to the reserves which saves an early start or the chix playing a night game after the seniors.

Hornets 2s were down 38 6 at qtr time that day. Then they kicked 20 goals to 4 after that.

Ablett,, whilst I respect your idea here, may I comment ,, that in the year of the grand final played at Broadbeach on the saturday ( be it the subject of these last few post ), the senior comp grand final was played on the sunday at the old Cararra stadium between Southport and Morningside ,, it was a fantastic game , but wouldnt of had 1500 people there ,,, which made for a big emtpy stadium with a deflated atmosphere. My opinion is that grand finals at grassroots level must be played at the local grounds because a crowd of 3000 plus creates a great atmosphere at these grounds.
Like the QAFL grand final last season at Yeronga between Labrador and Morningside would of had a crowd of some 3000 to 3500 .. was a fantastic atmosphere.
I remember a few years ago when The Thunder played Morningside in the NEAFL grand final at Redlands... the crowd was aroun 4500 plus , electric stuff.

Yeah a couple thousand people spread out around Metricon would be the same atmosphere as training on a Tuesday night!
One be fit of Yeronga is it's a neutral venue so no home ground advantage but it's a shame the facilities are average which is one thing Broady has goi g for it.

As mentioned elsewhere, I am helping the good people of QAFF (Queensland Australian Football Forensics - check us out at www.q150.net.au) to write the 150-year history of Australian Football in Queensland. A mighty project nearing completion.
My personal area of focus includes the SQAFA/BAFL era.
I need your help! I am looking for "publishable" photos, particularly game day photos, from participating SQAFA/BAFL clubs of the 70s, 80s, & 90s. If you can assist, please feel free to contact me directly - or post here.
I am certain there are some classic photos out there waiting to be rediscovered.
Thanks for your help.

Watched the Magpies defeat a depleted Broadbeach side on the weekend ... From this viewing, I still say it will be a Labrador vs Palm Beach grand final , with Labrador taking the flag ,,,, Labrador, after their horrific first half of the season injury wise are getting back on track ,,, it was only a few weeks ago they were not in the top 5 and now look where they are and have one of the best percentages in the comp ... thats alarm bells ..

we are starting to get our boys back and build momentum, but I don't see how you can go past the Tigers and Magpies.

Clearly the 2 form sides of the comp, nobody has really got near either of them for 6 weeks and only a couple of points separated them when they played.

I think the Tigers will go back to back, but the Magpies are dangerous and if they can get Staker back on the park they could win it for sure.

I wouldn't write off palmy yet. They have weathered the storm with 6 of their best out with injury over the past month and half.

And only 2 wins away (broady and grange) from sealing top spot and a home final.

Can't wait for finals. Each remaining home and away match has plenty riding on it now which is great for the comp

Can't ignore Palmy for sure. However, that belting at Salk Oval from an understrength Magpie outfit put me off them a bit.

Good side though, especially at the bookends. Just don't seem to have the midfield depth of Labrador and Sherwood.

We have been written off a bit, but I think we'll come home with a wet sail. Labrador look very strong though, and while they're not a 1 man side - I think the success or failure of Sherwood will depend on the unreliable body of one Brent Staker.

Stakers body cant stand up to the regular home and away games,,, so how will it stand up to a finals series where the intensity, pressure etc steps up 2 notches ...even if it does, one ex AFL player will not make the difference in a finals game. Guys like Mills from Labrador and Emblem from Palmy have the defensive ability to nullify Staker.
Palm Beach, has endured a bad injury toll so a few of its best players over the past 5 weeks ,,, but they are still winning ,, if they get these injured players back on the park for the finals,,, they dead set will be hard to beat.

I'd argue that & say definitely one X AFL player can make a difference in a Final.
I witness Tim Allen kick 5 goals in a row in the 3rd qtr of a prelim for Mornington one game v Edithvale/aspen-dale which turned the game in Morningtons favour.
And I'm sure there's many more stories like this one.

Staker could kick a bag & be the difference.

Absolutely. He's been going at half pace by all reports and has had a huge impact.

I don't think the 'intensity' of QAFL finals will worry a bloke who just stepped out of the AFL environment.

Obviously his body is an issue, but if he it 80% fit for the finals they will be a hard side to beat. Emblem got smashed by him 5 weeks ago and ended up in the forward line.

I thought they had the best midfield last year but couldn't score. This year they have improved their midfield and have genuine scoring power. Losing their fullback to Aspley makes them weak down back though. Abey killed them when we played them and thats their key weakness, no decent tall backs.

Ablett,,
agree ,, yes a ex afl player that has been on the park regularly will have the ability to do this,,, but in Stakers scenario, no ,, I disagree ,,

You never know with league b n fs with the way umpires votes.

Mind you you would think the winner would come from a team that has won a lot of games

Jesse Derrick would have to be a show.

Best midfielder in the top of the table side.

Yep, Derrick and Carseldine would have to be a chance.

Clarke and Mills would also have to be in the conversation and as smokeys I'd throw in Crawford from the Magpies, Mick Hammil from the Vultures and Bill Hicks from the Tigers.

If I had to pick a favourite, I'd go for Mills
