Review R9: The Good, Bad and the Ugly vs. Port Adelaide

Very Good:

Riley Beardthorpe was dominant. Absolute superstar gun. Port had no answers for him

Peatling was our best mid and continues to be a great pickup. Unfathomable he couldn't get more midfield time earlier in the season.

Ben Keays found some form after he's been maybe a bit down in prior weeks. Hit the scoreboard and contributed up the ground

Port tried to shut down Worrell but he still played well IMO, as did Keane. That final mark, wow.

Taylor shut down Rozee. 21 disposals in the first half, 11 in the second after Taylor went to him. Great defensive effort that will go unheralded

Berry continues to impact as the sub

Extremely bad:

Milera's turnover that gifted Port momentum when we were trying to stupidly shut down the game. Unforgivable error by a senior player

The multiple idiotic free kicks we gave away including all those horrible 50m penalties by senior players

O'Brien got towelled up early in the game by a ruck who had barely played a game. Again. Luckily he had the aerobic capacity to play deeper into the game.

Rankine, Dawson and especially Soligo were absolutely horrendous and it's amazing a team missing 3/4 of it's midfield could win

Nicks not tagging Rozee properly until half time and Nicks not putting any effort into stopping Butters and Nicks general strategy in the last 10 minutes and Nicks lack of answers for Port's gameplan in general

All of this. I couldn't believe my eyes when Milera kicked straight to Port. And then you had Laird pushing the ball out with his hand instead of a fist right in front of the umpire. What on earth was he thinking

Often I sit here and think, he’s the head coach of an AFL side, he must know better than all of us.

Then he goes and shuts the best forward line in the competition out of the game with 10 minutes to go, letting Port flood the ball forward time after time. Then, in the last minute he doesn’t even have the brains to get Thilthorpe behind the ball.

Nicks is an actual moron, no other word for it.

Hard to argue against that. He’s dumb. No doubt

I was at the game and in that last quarter I honestly thought Port were going to run over us when they stole the momentum. I wonder what may have happened if we took the game on in the last, but I can’t complain. We ****ing won!

Ugly: Huge amounts of dumb decisions tonight. Not sure Nicks can cop the blame when Milera looks inboard with the game in control. Or Laird deciding to throw it in D50. Or Keays pooing himself and kicking boundary. Or Berry refusing to get near JHF when he is the fresh guy. Or multiple people still trying to chain up ROB despite him having about one clean possession in 3 qtrs. Or Soligo basically taking option D every time tonight. Its all just dumb decision making.

When you have a whole team making poor decisions/panicking it is because they don't have trust in something. That something is Nicks and his gameplan.

He's talking about Fabian Francis, who is his step-father. Played 86 games for Port so not eligible for father/son, I'm not sure if the rules would have allowed it or not.

People have already made up their mind and then post-hoc justify their narrative.

It's blatantly obvious.

If the sum of the season is not making the 8 Nicks is gone. That's the metric.

Players made massive blues at key moments. That and the goal stolen off us and their 1st 3 being gifted.... That's a massive factor.

We played shit but the score line is massively compromised.

Keane: Yeah, we just wanted to play footy. Lucky to hold on after slowing down the game earlier than we should have. I've got nothing against wasting a bit of time off the clock when you're a few goals up but we went negative.

63 to 41 inside 50's. Pretty crazy we still found a way to win.
