Very Good:

Riley Beardthorpe was dominant. Absolute superstar gun. Port had no answers for him

Peatling was our best mid and continues to be a great pickup. Unfathomable he couldn't get more midfield time earlier in the season.

Ben Keays found some form after he's been maybe a bit down in prior weeks. Hit the scoreboard and contributed up the ground

Port tried to shut down Worrell but he still played well IMO, as did Keane. That final mark, wow.

Taylor shut down Rozee. 21 disposals in the first half, 11 in the second after Taylor went to him. Great defensive effort that will go unheralded

Berry continues to impact as the sub

Extremely bad:

Milera's turnover that gifted Port momentum when we were trying to stupidly shut down the game. Unforgivable error by a senior player

The multiple idiotic free kicks we gave away including all those horrible 50m penalties by senior players

O'Brien got towelled up early in the game by a ruck who had barely played a game. Again. Luckily he had the aerobic capacity to play deeper into the game.

Rankine, Dawson and especially Soligo were absolutely horrendous and it's amazing a team missing 3/4 of it's midfield could win

Nicks not tagging Rozee properly until half time and Nicks not putting any effort into stopping Butters and Nicks general strategy in the last 10 minutes and Nicks lack of answers for Port's gameplan in general

Good
Those few little patches of goals where we got on top and made it count. All our forwards looked dangerous at times.

Bad
We seemed to coast after these (above) moments. Feel like we had it won. Foot off the gas and they worked their way back in.

Ugly
Our midfield got annihilated. Peatling had a good period through the 2nd/3rd quarters but outside of that we were embarrassed

The commentators pointed out that we had a very low number of handballs (80) deep into the 3rd quarter. We went back to hack kicks. No control of the ball from stoppages or handball chains. Our wings, half backs & high high forwards couldn't get involved as a result

There are no words
Icing the clock with over 10 minutes remaining. Basically played dead and were lucky not to be overrun. Not putting numbers behind the ball or crowding stoppages when it was 4 points the difference with under a minute to go. Kept our structure ahead of the footy instead! Just... Nicks being Nicks.

Milera's Q4 turnover was surely Charlie Edwards' ticket into the team.

Laird's throw.

Are any other team's senior players panicky f*** up merchants?

Port absolutely blow. They have three good players, plus a 4th (Georgiades) doing okay out of position. Bergman decent. Then 18 others who wouldn't make our team. I know Showdowns are Showdowns but sheesh, that doesn't inspire much confidence.

Are we shocked that a deliberate tactical move by Matthew Nicks didn't work at all?

Pretty dismal performance really, we were listless outside of two brief periods of dominance in Q1 and Q4.

Most of our players played below their usual standard, but credit should go to a few:

Peatling did a great job, he's messy but he's exactly the kind of player we needed, especially given the rest of our midfield got toweled up.

Worrell was fantastic as always, at this stage of the season he's in AA form.

Keane was quality all night. That mark at the end was brilliant, but he was great the whole match.

Thilthorpe was fantastic until he wasn't, the first 2.5 quarters he was miles ahead of everyone else. Then seemingly vanished. Admittedly we couldn't get the ball forward in Q4 which didn't help him.

Fogarty, Keays and Rankine were all a bit below their best, but get a tick from me for nailing seven really important goals between them.

Everyone else below where they should have been. O'Brien was actually not terrible around the ground for a change, but can't be given a tick given how badly we got smashed in the stoppages.

No he wasn’t, yes we conceded scores but we won comfortably.

So which strategy is better? Let a scrubber team almost snatch because you try and hold on for 10 mins?

Not even you can be happy with that.
He was criticised on here for allowing too many goals even when we won big.

People have already made up their mind and then post-hoc justify their narrative.

It's blatantly obvious.

If the sum of the season is not making the 8 Nicks is gone. That's the metric.

Players made massive blues at key moments. That and the goal stolen off us and their 1st 3 being gifted.... That's a massive factor.

We played shit but the score line is massively compromised.

Good:
Showdown win
Ahead in the ledger

I started following football closely in 2001, when the ledger sat at 4-4, and watched Port blow it out to 4-11. At the time I doubted I would ever see the Crows ahead in the ledger.

I know it's not the first time we've led, but it does feel good to get our nose back in front :thumbsu:

The only way we were going to lose is if we got well beaten in the midfield.

We got well beaten in the midfield, but our more efficient forward line & our defence holding up was the difference.

Fox don't want it advertised you can't watch Kayo overseas. Lol slimey corporation.

Which is crazy given the AFL operates a specific international streaming service and surely they'd want people to know it exists?

Bad

Curtin - not panicking, but he needs to go back to the SANFL. He doesn’t find the ball enough. Class is only good if you get to use it.

Milera - I’m done. Tbh I was done a while ago. He was not shit, but surely it’s time to try some of our draft picks from 2023.

Tex - old and slow, and a bit silly.

Nicks - such poor coaching

I just don’t feel positive at all. I should, we won a showdown! But that last 15 minutes was inexcusable. Really poor game plan.

Inside 50s: - 22
Clearances: - 27
Contested possessions: - 12

We didn’t deserve to win that game and if we pull that shit out next week, then we are in for a long day.

Sorry for the negativity, but I’ll wake up in a better mood tomorrow!

Good: TT's first half, Keays lifting us in the second half, Zac Taylor, James Peatling

Bad: Midfield getting smacked. Bring back Draper and Dowling. Dawson and Rankine need more time back and forward, not full time mid. Soligo needs to snap out of it.

Ugly: T 💪

Sack Nicks

You're the Matthew Nicks of posting on this board.

There’s a slight difference between slowing things down a little bit when you’re up by 60 odd points, and doing the same when you’re getting smashed in the middle and only up by a few goals.
