Fans help Tigers draft extra AFL rookie
November 8, 2005 - 5:49PM
Richmond fans pledging money through a website will help the financially constrained AFL club recruit an extra player in next month's rookie draft.
The unofficial supporters' website, PuntRoadEnd.com, has already raised $8,000 through pledges from fans bemoaning the fact that the Tigers had only been able to afford two rookies this season.
Most clubs had between four and six.
Both of Richmond's 2005 rookies, defender Will Thursfield and midfielder Nathan Foley, have been upgraded to the primary list in the post-season.
The club agreed to let the website's members help pay for an extra rookie for next season, which costs the club about $35,000, after a request from the site's founder.
Some supporters had pledged up to $1,000 each.
Richmond football director Greg Miller said a club coterie group was also helping raise money to fund the extra rookie draft pick, under the novel plan.
"Financially, we've been restricted to just one or two choices over the past two to three years, and it looked to be the same situation in this rookie draft," Miller said on the club's official website.
"However, our Captain's Club coterie group has pledged its fund-raising efforts towards a rookie.
"The PuntRoadEnd website is also raising money towards helping us have a rookie.
"In essence, we will work closely with friends of the Richmond Football Club to be able to participate as deep into the rookie list as we can afford."

There, are you all happy now?
