05 we lost because we played Michael Gardiner who couldn't bend over instead of Lynch. Didn't make sense at the time, and certainly didn't' work in the game.

Really should have won both flags.

This plus Seaby was a liability in 2005 with 7 of 8 Sydney goals kicked whilst he was in the ruck!

(disclaimer - tend not to count good when drunk).

I think Melbourne is very similar to our 2018 side but their forwards are much weaker. I'm very optimistic that we can beat their game style in 2022 if we get our act together. We could have some good games against them next season.

Melbourne also had an amazing seasons in terms of minimal injuries which is unlikely to happen again as well

See the report below at R14 where we were ranked 1st & Melbourne 18th. Things pretty much remained the same in respect to both clubs for the remainder of the season

Gardiner and Lynch were both as poor as each other in 05.
People look at 06 Lynch and think he was as good in 05, he wasn't.

Lynch's breakout came in the latter half of 06, before that he was mediocre which is why Gardiner displaced him.

Our biggest advantage against Melbourne is that it's one of the few games where Max gets beaten. It causes Melbourne all sorts of problems as a result. They're not as good when he's not giving the mids first use and racking up touches of his own.

Jackson going into the ruck is what swung the momentum in that grand final, Gawn was quiet by his standards that game.

Unfortunately the've unearthed a very, very good combination now with both as dangerous as each other.

Lynch was comfortably ahead of Gardner in 2005.

Had him beat in every statistical category including (for ****s sake) hitouts, which he won 48 to 25.

More importantly given Gardner was picked at full forward for some reason, Lynch kicked twice as many goals, 31 to 16.

Dumb decision.

Lynch was out of form, which is why he got dropped.

Lynch had kicked 6 goals in 7 games leading up to when he got the axe. Gardiner wasn't much better either for the record. It was much of a muchness to play either at the time because they were both in shit form.

Lynch also played 23 games that year compared to Gardiner's 12, so not surprising he lead him in most categories.

Again, people fondly remember the 06 Lynch who was kicking them from everywhere and think the 05 model was as good, he wasn't.

He may have been out of form but Gardiner was physically crocked. He literally couldn’t bend over to pick the ball up.

I don't disagree, but playing Lynch wasn't going to change things.

Lynch went scoreless in the Qualifying Final two weeks earlier against the same opposition.
Gardiner kicked 2 in that same game, that's why he got the nod

Based on that, you can see why the match committee went the way they did.
Lynch didn't do enough to earn his place when it mattered in 05.

Travis Gaspar was the one that killed us. Tribunal let off both Hall and Gaspar from the previous week, screwing us over twice. There was never a matchup down back for him, with O'Loughlin and Hall both being mobile talls.

Who did Gaspar come in for in the prelim final?
He played two games that year, the prelim and grannie. Who missed out?

Lynch

Agree Hall escaping suspension was the big one that killed us, total BS that he got off. If only they paid the held on Sampi which despite kicking 20.24 in 05 I backed him to score the winning GF goal as he tended to be clutch during high pressure moments.

Barry Hall shoud have been suspended, but you still want to win the GF against best opposition side.
Selections and match day coaching is probably more my gripe.
But it is what is is.. that's footy.
Daniel Kerr's ankle 2005 GF to me is the biggest factor with regard to the result
Re; Sampi..any umpire that has that vision to pull the free amongst that pack is superhuman..especially in the dying stages of a GF
#Maynardwasablockhead..was he?...oh yes, I think he was

Brauny and the great RoJo also missed.

The real miracle is we were within a kick of Sydney at all.
Yep. Look at the 22 on gameday. They had no business winning that (on paper).
In reality we probably should've won.

Phil Matera's back failing in the back end of 05 is what really hurt. He was not the force he once was, but he'd been decent in the mid part of 05 before he was cooked.
Lynch missing probably hurt in hindsight too. Even though he wasnt much chop in 05, he played every game up until the QF.

Rojo barely played in 05 right?

Fell out of favour with Whoosh for a period there. Can't remember why.

I think they tweaked his role in 06 to be more of a defensive half forward and he cemented his spot that way
