Autopsy Round 5, 2025: Hawks refuse to join Gather Round

You learn more from a loss than a win. IF someone told me we would be 4 and 1 considering our tough start to our draw I would take that every day of the week!. Gunston was amazing tonight, how many times have we written him off but he just keeps bobbing up. We weren't good enough tonight but I'm more disappointed in some of the posts writing us off for the year and calling some of the players p$%^ weak. Sleep it off and let's move onto next week.
Go Hawks!
It's insane the childish reactions to a loss. We've won 13 premierships, and we lost games in every single one of those seasons. And there'd be people in those seasons claiming "it's over, we're shit."

I think Port pulled out several strategies to start the game that shocked us from a structural and individual perspective, and even when we adjusted we continually lost key 1v1s. Whether that's a prep thing on the coaches or the players not implementing something, who knows. Probably a bit of both.

Teams have been using some funky tactics on us all year, and like in those games we should've been able to turn it into a contested slog and keep the margin to 4-5 goals while we figured out a counter. We've been one of the best sides at handling momentum this year, but we were absolutely hopeless yesterday.

I'm sure we will learn from the tactical side of the game but really this is hardly new and we should've been much better prepared.

Once we did have the game on our terms you could still see how impotent our fwd line is without Croc, Moore, Dear and Lewis. I honestly think we had enough forward forays in that second half to win the game if we were efficient.

Croc and Scrim back next week will go a long way

He’s had another 12 months with an elite organisation since then. We’ve got to give him a go at some stage and it’s not working in the middle at the moment so it may as well be now?

Maginness, Morrison, CJ out.

Scrimshaw, MacDonald, Frost in.

Then play HH for either one of Nash (in) or probably Ward.

I’m not a huge fan of having Sis oit of the D50, but they’ll tag him, Scrim is back, and Chol is on his last legs and needs another marking target next to him, so maybe Sis goes forward this week.
Happy enough for HH to get a go, just trying to temper expectations so if has a sub 15 disposal game we don’t all want to hang him/ delist

Thought in the first half we were soft at the contest, too tall down back and had no one to compete aerially forward.

When we did have the ball we were spooked into making poor decisions with it.

Some of these issues can be fixed by flipping the magnets, hopefully the toughness will come through playing more and more of these games throughout the year.

I'm happy to see this as an aberration if we can bounce back next week.

Thanks for the history lesson, but I've followed the Hawks since 1968, as well as being a sports historian, I know all this. How it relates to how we played today I have no idea. The 1991 Hawks were a team of seasoned professionals, many of whom had been there, done that, many times over through the 80s. We knew if they hit the finals in reasonable form, they were in with a real chance. The current team are nowhere near that stage yet.

We were a Sicily poster from making a PF last season despite having the third youngest list.

If you claim to be a sports historian, you'd think you'd be able to give more context on a current situation using historical context but it appears you've already forgotten something that just happened six months ago.

It was interesting that as soon as Meek pointed out he was being held in every contest, the umpires started calling them after that. It's little wonder Jordon Sweet has opposition ruckmen who average 60 supercoach points against him. He cheats at every contest.

Spot on.

Sometimes its Facebook level of dummy spits in here.

We'll get smashed I feel. Had pencilled it in for a loss when looking at the early season fixture.

Might be a few demons after whatever the hell last night was.
Footy is a funny game and a week in the AFL is a long time. Before last nights game I thought if we beat Port convincingly we’d probably lay an egg against the Cats. Last night was the sleepy post-bye performance that we’ve seen other teams have for years, the bath water has now been flushed, the boys will want to make up for last night this week on the MCG.
Not saying they will win, but I fully expect a much better physical performance than that now that the Hawk bubble has been popped.

Well there was the game is was waiting for.
The game that enforced my own belief that we are simply not ready yet to take the next step.
1: simply not ready mentally. Port sucked us in time and time again and we fell for it time and time again.
2: We lack an A Grade Class midfielder...Go out and get one.
3: A Key Forward with a physical presence would be handy. Chol is to many times out muscled by his opposition. Dear will be handy when he returns but his still only a kid in a kids body.. Mitch Lewis is Mitch Lewis teases with a couple of good games a year then goes missing and gets injured.
4: The defence....seems better when it's only battle & Barrass down there, leave Sicily Forward and for gods sake put Weddle in the middle or on a wing.

Geelong this week...turn up or get smashed by them yet again

a lot of chicken little in this thread, brace yourselves as there are more losses to come.

The 2nd half was more of indication on where we are at, we have issues so do 16 other teams. Lions are the barometer.

I am firm believer you learn more from a loss than a win, bring on the cats

I know he got done for subbing urine samples and for possessing weed but don't know about drug cheat. The planet would a better place if world 'Leaders' started blowing a few blunts instead of each other. IMO.
If you sub samples you're a drug cheat.

There was an incident in the 3rd quarter when two port and two hawk players were on the wing. Port had possession and the port player wit the ball was being cornered by one of the hawk players. The other port player was being covered by the second hawk. Then the second Hawthorn player decided to leave his man and help out, so the handball comes over the top to the now free port player and away they went. So frustrating.

Not enough has been made of this battle imo.

Sweet has done this for a long time and gets away with it far often than he should.
In the second half when they started pinging him for it he went from being the dominant force on the field to being very manageable.

First game against them last year I remember him crossing the circle to knee Meek in the thigh which took him out of the game then.

We were out of sorts defensively.

Might have been the second quarter but one that stood out like Dogs balls was Battle calling Weddle out to follow his man so he can press but Weddle either didn't hear it or ignored it and they both pressed leaving a Port player unmanned I50 for the easiest of chip kicks.
