As far a Balta is concerned, I think its pretty certain that if the AFL had seen that vision before they ticked off on the 4 weeks, it would have been more.

Agree totally.
Only way AFL could have increased the penalty was if Balta lied to them but from all reports his version of events was roughly similar to the video.
So the AFL was sort of stuck with the 4 weeks.

He's an employee of the AFL, why could they not add loading or even dismissal when the new footage & guilty plea came to light?
I remember Taylor Walker got given 6 weeks from the AFL (plus community service) then the next year denied him playing two pre season games, as he hadn't completed his ban.
Also how many times has Tarryn Thomas penalty been deliberated on over the journey, I know there was more than one incident but from what I know none as severe as this.

That’s the thing. I understand those who somehow have lost the context of why a suppression order is in place thinking it’s to support a rich athlete but that’s not it. Players are employed by the clubs, but the AFL have what is called a tri-partite arrangement in their contract where they have an interest in their employment conditions. They are able to set the rules and conditions of employment with the club and their registration to play in the AFL.

What if its an Ex GF? What if a friend of the Accused is so angry at his treatment that he decides to leak the name and smear the reputation of the Accuser online?

In most cases the story is known in a very small pool of people; and a suppression order isn't needed because no one really cares in the first place. In this case its a front page story and so a suppression order is needed to avoid Journos acting like vultures looking for a scoop.

also, Protecting the victims identiy is just one of the reasons its important not to have cases aired out in the media. It also helps protect the accused if they're found to be not guilty and helps ensure the case is heard impartialy and the judication is fair.

We have admitted him into a 24/7 recovery facility to keep a eye on his progress but if worse comes to worse we can expect him back at the beginning of the next decade"

In other words, the above is a fairytale not the reality. Geelong want to protect the accused and thats the simplicity of it all...
