Marc murphy averges 5 less disposals than pendelbury
But murphy had kicked 14 goal
Pendelbury has kicked 3

i rate both highly but i think murphy is better and will be better

murphy for mine. really like the way he has gone about it this year, has an added an offensive side to his game avaging just a tick under 2 goals a game this season. thats impressive for a rover. really quality user of the footy and i see him as a top 5 midfielder in the league in 2 or 3 years. very consistent always gets 20+ touches of the pill per game. i guess it helps having judd run around next to you though. also probably my favourite player in the league outside richmond so may be a little bias but i do think murph is slightly better.

i rate pendlebury highly also. would be close to leading the pies b and f this season. really quality user of the footy and a pretty good mark. also consistent like murphy. probably gets more of the pill then murph but i think murph does a little more with it. both guns, there aint much in it. i wouldnt mind having them run round down at punt road thats for sure.

I was a bit sceptic of both when they were drafted but now am sold on the two. Both will be up there with the best next year or later on this year and just need consitency to be considered elite.

Both could also captain their clubs in the future.

They are both classy, with few differances between them.
Scott doesn't look as natural as Marc, with his basketball background, and therefore isn't as hard at the ball as Marc. But Scott has better evasive skills and is better in the air.
They are differant, but it's one of those "who's better, Voss or Hird" type ones, both fantastic but you can't split them, yet. Gonna have to wait and see how their careers turn out.
Scott seems to have better endurance, at this stage anyway. But Marc is quicker.
Tiny differances, not voting.

It's been done to death, and it really doesn't matter. Both are closing in on elite. Both are elite if considering this season alone. Both are extremely damaging in different ways (Pendlebury as an extractor and in traffic, as well as his disposal; Murphy with his running, goal kicking and the fact that he's just a gun).

Who cares who is better...

Pendlebury looks and is less damaging by foot because of Mighty Mick's chip it along the boundry line game plan.

Murphy is hitting the score board more, so im going with Murphy purely on that reason alone.

Not the fact that you are a Carlton supporter??

I'd take Pendles over that midget any day of the week.

It's funny how you accuse someone of being biased and then give a completely biased view yourself.....moron

I'd say they are probably both neck and neck. Murphy has kicked more goals this year where Pendles has had more of the footy. They are both elite users of the ball and show leadership skills.

Hard to make a choice to be honest so i wont vote.

Very sensible summation. I agree totally.

I would also add that Murphy probably still has more room for improvement because of his dynamic nature. The Rioli comparisons to Ablett have some truth to them, but I would have thought that Murphy is the closest to be able to play like Ablett in the future. Pendlebury is going to be a very good inside and outside midfielder for sometime, but Murphy will probably win more matches off his own boot and be given more plaudits in the future because of this.

me and a collingwood mate debate this every week.

after 2 years we have all but given up.

they are neck and neck and probably will be for the rest of there careers.

If your collingwood supporter you wouldnt give up pendles and if your a carlton supporter you wouldnt give up murphy.

Hird > Bucks :)

I think you should. Murphy is getting soundly beaten in this poll.

I can't split them at this point in time, so if i voted it would be for Murphy but only as i am a carlton supporter which is not what the polls are for. So i wont vote.

Where as you would just vote for any collingwood player, i'm sure of that.

Hard call. One has more pace, strength and goal kicking ability. The other looks to have more skill by hand and foot plus more composure.
Pendlebury at pick 5 just for me

It's a bit weird because at the beginning of their careers, Murphy was the inside ball winner and Pendlebury was more outside and damaging offensively. They're both showing this is largely perception and they can play both roles well.

One area Murphy has improved massively is his attacking power - last year it was lots of inside 50s and assists, this year he's kicked a lot of goals from the midfield.

Meanwhile, in 2009 Pendlebury is one of the best ball winners in the comp. He is ranked equal 2nd in the AFL for clearances (along with Judd and Bolton), is very high in first possessions, plus is equal 9th in the AFL for contested possessions (actually putting him ahead of his contemporaries J Selwood and M Murphy in this area).

Playing more of pure centreman role this year, Pendles has only kicked 3 goals, but he still has 10 goal assists, putting him equal 5th in the AFL in that area.

Interestingly, while some Carlton supporters seem to delight in criticising Pendlebury for lots of chip kicks, a lot of this is the product of the MM game plan. Moreover, it's bullshit, as he averages the exact same number of long kicks a game as Murphy with 3.9 a game. Pendlebury appears to be overcoming the mild OP he was playing through in 2008 and is demonstrating his accurate long kicking ability more often, like he did at the start of his career.

no its got nothing to do with Murphy being a Carlton player. Ill let you know that outside of Carlton Pendles is one of my favourite players...

Score board pressure plays a heavy part in my judging of similar players and in this case murphy has kicked 14 goals this year to pendlebury's 3....

Other than that i really cant split them.... but in saying that, i dont think that Pendlebury will ever become the player that he should, if Mick continues with this Chip it along the boundry line game plan he has going right now...

oh i guess you dont rate the Ablett midget either then

The poll seems to be an indicative result of the general Bigfooty consensus.

They are both elite users of the ball.
Could you please elaborate? Murphy an elite user of the ball? How so?

Majority of the posters in this thread also have Pendlebury as a top 10 midfielder in season 2009.

If you have watched him at all this year you would not be asking this question. His disposal has been sublime, especially going inside 50.
He was terrible bringing the ball into the forward 50 last week against Adelaide.

It was highlighted earlier in the week by footy media shows amongst many other examples of Carlton's poor ball use.

DE % might not be the best thing to go by but looking over this season, Murphy's efficiency has dropped off immensely. The first five rounds of the season Murphy had not once dipped below a DE% of 80 but since then, he has managed one game above 70%.

I'm afraid Murphy's kicking is going backwards.
