I think this is the appropriate place for this...

People want to see it, a stand-alone is appropriate.

Heres the thing, everyone suggests things like more games on key rounds like ANZAC day and things like that, but these games would be Foxtel anyway or lost amongst other things.

What would actually be the huge value is the all eyes on one game, the hour or two lead into the game and all of the things that go into it.

Really the AFL should be funding an event game to the highest placed SA team once a year or something, only game on the day, channel 7 with full commentary team and interviews/buildup for an hour or more, AFL executives in attendance (yeah who cares but the game deserves the respect) they should be funding the pre-game presentation and all of that.

I don't know if all of that would change my enjoyment of the game, but it would be a huge value to the clubs and maybe it wouldn't be a huge success immediately, but I think it would build.

Do we deserve it more than WA or NSW or QLD, yeah why not.

Outs seem pretty even
Wines, Ebert, Gray, Hartlett, Dixon, Watts, and Jonas
Jacobs, Douglas, Milera, Seedsman, Brown, and Doodee

When you remove borderline best 22 players, Port have lost WAY more quality

Wines, Ebert, Gray, Dixon and Jonas
Milera, Seedsman, Brown, and Doedee

Port have lost their best player, best forward, best defender, and two solid midfielders. We've lost two very good wings, and two very good defenders. Not really comparable

I wonder if losing Wines balances them out better. They have Boak, Rocky and SPP as pure inside mids and Drew as a bit of a hybrid. I don't rate Ollie at all anymore. Just a middle of the road poorly skilled plodder. They should bring in a running player for Ollie ie Motlop.

Dixon is a poor man's Jenkins. And we have Hberg in instead of Marshall, who disappointingly seems stuck on the "Port Development Curve".

Ebert has also been playing more like a short tall forward, like his cousin. They could bring in a genuine key forward in Frampton who is in good form. That makes them stronger.

Disappointed Jonas not playing. Means Tex may get a capable defender on him in Clurey.

Gray out is quality. Not sure who is gonna flop for their frees now. He has looked "old" all year.

I personally think they could field a more balanced side this week than they have had all year.

We have not hosted a night showdown ourselves since round 18, 2007. Ridiculous.

Then Port get a record crowd because of the tens of thousand crows supporters, but it's all because Portz.

I suspect they're better off without Wines. I can't really think of him ever having played a good showdown, but he's certainly single handedly lost a few.

For whatever reason Ebert was making me nervous though and rather pleased he won't be able to play.

Ebert and Sam Gray have been their best forwards all year and are tricky matchups.

In all seriousness, if someone had planned to do a proper write up feel free to start a new thread.

What happened to our list from years past? I always got to be the last game

Very young side the power, 11 under 50 games last week.

Every experienced mature body they lose hurts them.

Last few weeks we’ve played to our strength - a big, bruising midfield playing a slower, more defensive and contested style.

Much admiration for Ports kids but they may just be over powered on what is likely to be heavy conditions.

What's with this admiration b.s. Peter....screw them and bury their noses in the mud. :)

We did float the idea to bring Face Offs back, but we only got a couple of responses so I wasn't sure just how keen people were to do them again.

Dixon is a poor man's Jenkins.
Oh please. Why is he struggling in the SANFL in a team that hasn't kicked a big score?

Lol

He's been injured all pre season, his fault of course. If that's your definition of a plodder well...

Disappointed Jonas not playing. Means Tex may get a capable defender on him
Jonas, the guy who made the AA squad isn't capable?

I personally think they could field a more balanced side this week than they have had all year.
Yeah cause who needs 6 plus walk up starts including both Captains....

Seriously Geoffa if you are gonna be so one eyed and dismissive that's just loses any credibility. Least of all when your fellow fans (and everyone in the media) acknowledge that Port has many quality players out.

How is that even when one includes Gray?

Irrespective of all the rest....

Of that list Jacobs is probably one you need to start to learn to live without anyway, atleast 2020 onwards, I'm sure many will agree if he's the number 1 going fwd you are in big trouble.

If it's people we need to learn to live without from 2020 onwards is the test much the same can likely be said for Gray, Hartlett and Dixon ...

I'd be quietly confident that there's more left in those 3 than Jacobs.

O'Brien will keep Jacobs out if he continues to improve. No one is keeping those 3 Port players out.

Gray just signed an extension anyway. He's been unfit all year. Too early to judge on the other 2, but before injuries both were playing well, Hartlett probably his best.

Port have 2 backmen that are playing well. Clurey and that other guy on the HBF.
All 3 Houston, Howard and Clurey have been good.

We don't have a shortage in key defence at all, so Jonas, while our best is manageable.

Wet weather under lights, thats gonna be a far bigger issue for lighter bodies. Though many of which played well vs the Eagles so who fking knows which Port rocks up.

Agreed, defence has been excellent all year.

I think if you can get reasonably odds for a combined score of under 160 then get on!

Wines rates so high in clangers and so low in DE% it more than offsets Robbie.

Ranked 2nd in Total Clangers in 2016
Ranked 9th in Total Clangers in 2014

Go watch that kick for goal in the last showdown in case you forgotten which ultimately cost you finals.
Did you see that Dangerfield and Martin among others were in those lists? Does that make them average? What do you think they have in common? There were countless players in those lists amongst the best in the leauge.

You reckon the Showdown loss is what cost us Finals? Really?

It wasn't the Dixon and Ryder issues at all? We went from 4/5 to missing the moment those 2 were played injured and missed games.

No team is better without Wines. Let alone Robbie Gray. That's just so one eyed.

Personally think your team this week could be better than last week. And more of a chance than a lot of experts think against us. Would not surprise me if you catch us and snuff the game out early.

Farrell and Johnson provide some pace. Something we do struggle with. With Ollie in the side your are too one paced with him, Boaky, Rocky, SPP and Drew in the side. I would have much preferred Ollie and Ebert in the side as it makes your team slower and more predictable.

And yes I don't rate Ollie. Very over rated player. Poorly skilled and lacks any real Football education. Had great raw talent and has not built on it.

Rocky far better inside mid. As is Boak. These guys should never have been shoehorned into forwards last year at Ollie's expense.

Robbie, Jonas and Ollie have been poor this year. Yes injured. But Robbie is also old and expected to drop off as he ages.

As for Dixon v Jenkins. No one knows how Dixon will come back. However Jenkins has kicked more goals than him over the past five years, is more mobile and can read the play better. Dixon is a better contested mark and yes more of a key forward.

If we are both honest we would say neither are great forwards. At least Jenkins is relatively cheap.

Cause we are at home, and you aren't Collingwood, a very likely Grand Finalist.

Given our issues with a one dimensional midfield is something you have the same issues with (post Cameron and no Milera in particular), I know I'd rather have bigger bodies in the likely wet vs Crouch*2 and Sloane.

And yes I don't rate Ollie. Very over rated player. Poorly skilled and lacks any real Football education. Had great raw talent and has not built on it.
Well, he's be a walk up start in every team, including yours, so no one shares your opinion.

Rocky far better inside mid. As is Boak. These guys should never have been shoehorned into forwards last year at Ollie's expense.
Blame the coach, won't argue, Boak is a midfielder, Rocky just took time to adjust and without Ryder for much of last season it's no surprise a clearance machine didn't get settled... and how much that changed with Ryder/Lycett this season isn't a surprise at all.

Robbie, Jonas and Ollie have been poor this year. Yes injured. But Robbie is also old and expected to drop off as he ages.
Gray at 90% is still better than most in the league. 2 years younger than Betts too, with a year off on a knee which could go either way as far as longevity.

As for Dixon v Jenkins. No one knows how Dixon will come back. However Jenkins has kicked more goals than him over the past five years, is more mobile and can read the play better. Dixon is a better contested mark and yes more of a key forward.
And before your last 3 wins many Crows fans were calling out for the lack of contests that Jenkins/Tex provide. Something that Dixon does, EVERYTIME. It's not always about goals. It's what he offers the side structurally. He's invaluable to us, and without Marshall this year we lost 2 games we probably would have won had Dixon or Marshall played.

If we are both honest we would say neither are great forwards. At least Jenkins is relatively cheap.
Put both on the trade block this season, Dixon fetches far more. Age a part of that, but form is a part too.

Yet some still talk of him as if he were Carey.
No one does, don't get carried away.

If the ball is coming in well, he's an impossible player to match up on. He's what Tippet should have been and did show very small glimpses of. At their bests, absolutely unstoppable. No one has the size and strength to go with them. Both also could ruck capably too.
