Roast So, when does Burgess start getting some scrutiny?

Well this has escalated from my simple confusion over whether this is a training camp as Ollie suggested in August or a holiday, I never said they weren't entitled to a holiday but just thought they were going over to the US to train with Burgo and hopefully improve themselves as footballers. I don't really care what they do in the off season, or how many night clubs they attend or beers they have as long as they do the work required to improve on the sh!t I've seen the last 2 years.

I just don't think it's fair to assume they're not over there doing what they've said they're over there to do on the back of a few tweets and photos. They paid their own way too btw. It's not as though they're a bunch of public office holders living large off the public purse on some overseas junket.

Yep. We have a bunch of players who want to get some exposure to elite sports training in the US with our head fitness guy and learn a few things on their holidays after a long season. They also paid their own way but hey how about we get on their backs and hold them to unrealistic standards because we can yell at them 'but you're highly paid'. I take it you guys complaining expect CEO's to take their laptop everywhere with them on holidays and run meetings?

This is more common than you'd think.

The obsession from a few here with stalking our players' social media accounts and running to this board when they're not pulling out a triathlon every morning on their time off is abit creepy..

For those following this on social media who is on this private training camp? Everybody at the dinner photo posted a couple of pages back or some more players??

I know it's not an official club sanctioned trip - the players have paid for it themselves - but you would think given Burgo and Boak seem to be the main instigators - Boak is sponsored by Nike - you would expect everyone on it not to be traded away or delisted by the club. The lads - 7 or 8 of them that organised the private training camp in Avoca Beach in northern NSW after the 2011 season and before preseason started, were all retained. IIRC Boak, Bobby and Jacko organised it with the help of Falloon.

Boak, Robbie Gray, Sam Gray, Wingard, Wines, Dixon, Hartlett, Clurey, Broadbent, Hombsch, O'Shea I may have missed someone there to.

You don't think that this trip may have been planned and booked before end of season reviews?

Yeah it sounds harsh on the ears, but is it really that far off the mark?

Sycophant
noun

A person who attempts to gain advantage by flattering influential people or behaving in a servile manner.

No it really is a shit post and I'm disappointed you've suggested it. O'Shea is a fringe player on the edge of the 22 because he's capable of playing decent footy off half back pushing up to the wing. The fact he's on the list is down to the peaks of his past performances and a very conservative attitude held by the club in regard to list management. Again, it's disappointing that people actually hold the perception that only the top players hang out together like the cool group in some American high school TV drama.

I don't agree.

I think O'Shea has proven in the majority of his 81 games that he is not AFL standard and that his continued spot on the list is, in part, due to the relationships he has forged within the club.

The right person doesn't always get the job. Relationships have an influence. Cliques exist. It's office politics and it happens everywhere. O'Shea lived with Boak and Gray for a while and they're obviously very close. He has made friends with the right people, and if you think that couldn't have been the difference between him and another player being delisted and/or traded in the past that's fine, but I think it's a bit naive.

We've all been in a workplace where some joker has avoided scrutiny, or even been promoted, because of who they know or who their friends are, and my suspicion is that O'Shea is our joker.

So the players O'Shea hangs around with, especially his housemate Ollie Wines, actually control list management? o_O

Haha that's not even close to being one of the more offensive things written about an individual player on this board.

I mean, just this week Janus suggested that Matthew Lobbe has no soul due to his complexion. Carn.

The tail has been wagging the dog for some time now (see The Players vs. @kochie_online) and it's only on the back of consecutive failures, and most likely threatened jobs, that the dog is wagging back.

The players don't make the decisions but they can certainly exert some influence, especially the big names.

Some stuff from the self funded camp 11 players went to at the Nike HQ in Portland with Burgo.

This guy played for Newcastle United, he lives in Newcastle in the UK, you can't miss the mini Sydney Harbour Bridge they have there ie the Tyne Bridge, on his wallpaper, but his twitter page says
- Nike Sports Research Lab. Sports Performance Insights

The Nike Performance Specialist that was in the Ch 9 video above.

So you'd reckon these 11 will still be around next year and no trades for them. What a rag tag looking bunch. But looks like they all have their Nikes on.

Clurey, Chad, Hombsch, Charlie, Sammy G, Boak, Robbie, Ollie, Hammer, O'Shea and Broadie

They could definitely be traded or delisted, but it is hard to see someone going if they know they are on the way out.

Not a huge O'Shea fan but maybe he is aware of his shortcomings and by doing stuff like this maybe he wants to improve.
I get that we can criticise players when they don't perform but to have a go at him for indulging in extra training that is self-funded is a bit odd.....
