http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22877648-11088,00.htmlCOLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire has unveiled the radical details of a plan for a 24-round home-and-away season to bankroll the AFL's Gold Coast push.
McGuire says the Pies would happily play six "away" games at Carrara Stadium, and that the extra $10 million a year raised by the broadcast rights would fund a 25,000-seat stadium upgrade.
He says the plan would lay the foundation for an AFL team's eventual relocation to the area, and give the Kangaroos time to decide if they could survive in Melbourne.
It shapes as an escape clause for the Kangaroos, who will today learn whether the AFL will give them a 12-month extension on their deadline to move to the Gold Coast.
Collingwood's proposal to the AFL emerged late last month as the league scrutinised all the options for its Gold Coast expansion.
But the expanded 24-round home-and-away season is the most progressive and eye-catching in a detailed proposal McGuire revealed yesterday.
"If the push into Queensland was to fall over because the Kangaroos decide they want to stay in Melbourne, this is an opportunity for Collingwood to go up as the biggest brand in football," McGuire said.
"Everyone gets something extra.

"The money you receive for the two extra weeks in the season more than pays for the expansion, or to promote the game in Queensland, or to build a new stadium.

"You save the $50 million that would have gone to the Kangaroos, you have no impact on the salary cap or draft, and it would be a massive win-win situation."
Under McGuire's plan, which he says could be used as early as next year:
ALL six non-Victorian clubs would play Collingwood in a "neutral" game that could be packaged as "TV bonanzas" for broadcasters.
A 24-ROUND season would raise an extra $10 million a year to help the AFL and Queensland Government fund a Carrara stadium upgrade.
COLLINGWOOD would still play 18 games in Melbourne and rival Victorian teams could play the Pies in lucrative home fixtures.
THE Kangaroos would get the time to determine their future, while rival clubs get an uncompromised draft and salary cap with no 17th side.
"On my reckoning, the TV rights would be worth an extra $10 million a year, and next time up you could sell these games as an individual package so it would be $10 million-plus," McGuire said.
"We are quite happy to be the teaser pony and allow North time to get themselves right one way or the other, and if that means they go up there after us, so be it."
McGuire's plan would require a redrawn AFL fixture if it was implemented for next season.
But it could just as easily work from 2009 onwards.
McGuire is determined nothing gets in the way of an uncompromised draft and salary cap, which helped Brisbane win three consecutive premierships.
"We cannot let anything obstruct the purity of the draft. This takes the pressure off the Kangaroos, it takes the foot off the throat off the club."

Awesome work Ed - playing all the interstate teams on a favored neutral ground all in the name of North Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

FFS, every club including the Kangas would kill for that deal.

I know you are pretty good Ed - but sometimes you actually have to give something in return when you are negotiating - just in case the toothless bogan army are all at the clinic for the day and can't back you up.

It's just good sport if nothing else.

Makes me laugh the way Eddie goes on about the "purity" of the draft but he's more than happy for the draw to be rigged in his favour.

Now he's not only suggesting that's ok, but he wants to rig it further so no team get's an advantage?

LOL . . . good one Ed. :D

Agree Jeff. But hard to blame him. They have won one flag in 50 years. Have just re signed a coach who is nearing a decade of failure (bizarre move to say the least!) and Eddie checks out a list that has guys like Presti and Wakes down back and guys like Rocca, Shaws, Thomas and Fraser still getting senoir gigs. I can see why he is chasing for a big advantage.

As if the draw wasn't rigged in his favour already! There is no way the other clubs (yes eddie - there are 15 other clubs in the league!) would agree to this proposal.

I would agree with it, however, the "interstate" clubs are begining to struggle. It may not be too long before only 1 or two of them can contribute significantly for a long period of time.

Interstate clubs are doing fine. As far as i know all interstate clubs turned a profit this year and that is especially impressive for the Swans as they are currently playing in a stadium with a greatly reduced capacity.

McGuire wouldnt unveil it until the deal had been done, therefore its done.

I'm surprised he's got the rival networks to pay extra already, while the players get paid the same amount.

He must have used that famous negotiating technique he used on the directors of the block.

im not refering to profits im refering to how they play.

Port and Brissie are on the right path. Sydney and Adelaide are heading down. Freo is imposible to tell and WCE at this stage have lost the core of their playing group, and may struggle

Won't happen.

nice rant but you overlook the fact that every single one of those players would be in your best 22.... and that your lot would have had Malthouse in a heartbeat.

Yeah cant see why those guys are getting games

ps you idiot.

Not that it's relevant to the thread topic but...I'd rather Fletcher and Michael over Wakes and Presti, prefer Lloyd and Lucas over Rocca, don't rate Rhyce Shaw either. But Heath Shaw would certainly be in our best team and Thomas and Fraser would get a spot too although Fraser is overrated in my opinion. As for Malthouse, wouldn't want him at this point. Not to say that he isn't still a good coach but he's not at a stage in his career where he'd be a good option to take over a new team.

argh, how many flags for Sheeds in 25 years, didn't have such a great GF record either.

So Collingwood would never have to play in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney or at the Gabba. It seems like a god deal for Collingwood as it would be the home away from home. I wonder what profit Collingwood would make out of this deal given that he would be promoting Collingwood up the wazoo in the lead up to each game? Very generous of Eddie. I wonder if he would be so keen on the idea if Carlton offered to do it or Richmond or Essendon? Woudl he describe it as a win win situation?
I don't think so.

So AAMI Stadium, Subiaco, Telstra Stadium etc miss out on hosting games against Collingwood? (which are very popular among supporters) That's ridiculous.

At least Sheeds won 4 flags with the Dons.

Sheedy - 4 Flags in 25 years at Essendon - 1 every 6.25 years
Malthouse - 0 Flags in 9? years at Collingwood

And before you jump on about his flags at other teams that is not the point Monkeyboy was making.

Using that logic, Carlton should have signed up Pagan again because he won 2 flags at the Roos:rolleyes:

fck i hate mcguire...

why would interstate clubs like west coast and adelaide, who have members banging down the doors to get in, give up a home game? why would they increase the number of times they have to travel so collingwood can set up a base in qld and effectively never have to travel?

i can't believe mcguire's serious about this...

How about Collingwood plays some interstate fixtures some year! Talk about wanting everything your own way ! If the AFL agree to this they are gutless morons and the non Victorian clubs should band together to oppose it. Actually I think that it is a scam by Eddie to get some lesser (but still considerable) advantage for Collingwood; an "ambit claim" if you will. I'll be interested to see what the slimy Collingwood president is REALLY after !

You people crack me up sometimes. WTF is the harm in offering a plan widening footy in Australia? I've not noticed any of the 'keep the roos in melbourne' squad complaining. I agree, the AFL will not implement a Collingwood idea, that would undermine their authority not to mention people like monkeyboy whinging like a forgotten sibling. This isn't a new idea either, Eddies been cooking it up for quite some time. And who's gonna complain (apart from the players) about two more rounds? More footy the better, I'd have them playing all year round if I could.

Hope it happens, but it won't, I just enjoy watchin biatches do their pie-bashing thing. You make me giggle

Personally, I dont have a problem with this.

The clubs which will benefit the most from the proposal:

Collingwood
North Melbourne

The clubs which will benefit a bit from this deal:

Geelong
Hawthorn
Melbourne
St Kilda
Bulldogs

The clubs which will not be affected:

Essendon
Carlton
Richmond

Teams which will lose from this deal:

West Coast
Adelaide
Fremantle
Port Adelaide
Sydney
Brisbane

The reason I say this: Benefits for Collingwood and North are obvious. The second bracket will be advantaged because they will get a guaranteed home game against Collingwood. That was worth 750k to Geelong last year, which we dont get this year. The third bracket get home games against Collingwood anyway. The fourth bracket will potentially lose home games.

Sure, Collingwood are getting better and better off, but as a Geelong fan, i do not see why I would be disappointed.

It isn't the "two more rounds" that people are objecting to it is the idea of Collingwood never having to travel to Perth or Adelaide to play matches in the future. This plan doesn't "widen footy"; it simply gives Collingwood an advantage not shared by other clubs. Hey i've got an idea how about Collingwood ALWAYS plays interstate teams away and never gets a game against West Coast, Adelaide, Brisbane etc at the MCG (unless it's a final) ! That is at least as fair as what Eddie is suggesting !
