I obviously dont pay as much attention to WCE games.. but i dont remember seeing Masten go near a pack in the games he played.. and thats in a midfield which contains Priddis as the only consistent extractor (not that i rate him at this at all either, but out of necessity as he cant run faster than my 194 yr old great great grandmother)

Maybe you should have watched how he played in the AFL this year bb and based your opinion on that instead.

if ever you get a chance, take a look at the dockers sydney game played at the SCG this year, we lost the game which you should enjoy being an eagles supporter, and take a look at rhys play, count how many times he threw himself at the ball, count how many times he came off the bottom of the pack, rhys palmer this year was as in and under as any player we or the eagles for that matter had. you are making a judgment on a player without looking at the facts

The only bloke I would half consider overlooking him for is Yarran if you think he will make it as a mid. If Yarran makes it as a mid, he will be very special indeed.

That's what I am thinking too. I don't really rat Hill that highly, but what would I know?

I don't see the article as a Duffield's opinion per se, more a report on what someone else said even thought it didn't come from a FFC source. It's a speculation and at least it is presented as such and not as a fact, unlike what Kim Hackdorn and Digby Beacham do.
I can put up with speculations in papers as long as they're not presented as facts because in that case those become lies. It's no different to what we do here....speculate about who we're going to draft etc.
I still think Duffield is the only decent journo here in WA.

Wouldn't be opposed to taking either of Hill or Swift at pick 3. Both seem to have much better attitudes than Rich.

Personally, I would go Harlett, Yarran over Rich.

While Rich is a huge talent, if the kid or any other young player has crap attitude or doesn't really want to play for your club, let alone die for it. Why would you want him?

Sorry, what I was trying to say in general terms that while football talent is the major thing, there could be other factors e.g. attitude etc that could in the end be the thing that influences the decision. A Player could fit in better to a club's cullture than other.

The clubs with top five picks, can't go wrong this year. So if its Rich, Nick Nat, Hill or Yarran at 3, I don't see the problem.

I would take Swift over Hill although that is a massive risk but its just my opinion.

Personally for the WA boys I'd probably have it as follows

NicNat>Rich>Yarran>Swift>Hill>Walters>Jetta etc.

I can't understand how we'd overlook Ziebell/Rich/Hartlett/Yarran all high quality prospects that have proven form over a long period of time, for a skinny rake of a kid like Hill who's burst onto the scene this year (after missing out as a bottom ager last year) as an amazing athlete, but not much of a footballer.

I think people have to realize that there is a thing called "upside" which is something that the recruiting staff look into very seriously aswell as past achievements/form. Just because he is skinny now doesnt mean he will be forever it is possible to gain muscle from 18 yrs of age beleive it or not.

Have you watched him play , he might be skinny but he went harder than anyone else at the champs this year thats somthing you cant teach. I would'nt soley put him in the "athlete" catergory either, yes he is super athletic but he also has a raking left foot,courage and a football brain.

Rich on the other hand has been a man amongst boys the last couple of years in the 18's system, you cant knock his achievements 2 time all australian and wafl premiership player. But he has struggled lately especially against a tag , you have to wonder if has the fitness and work ethic to compete at the next level.

Im sure he will be a good player but im not sure if has what it takes to be a great player.

Come draft day i will trust that the dockers staff will make the right decision whoever it is and draft players with the right attitudes like palmer and mayne.

Of all the players we have been linked with, this is the hardest one to believe

Surely with a top 3 pick you either want a key forward, ruckman or elite on-baller. Hill shapes as a Grant Birchall type. He will be a good player but not what we want IMO

Exactly, KPP or inside mid with the first pick, and there are so many good options available, it's not like it's a 2002 or 2003 quality draft. We have enough HBF prospects.

That little comment there struck me. It's exactly why we took Dunn. He looked the goods playing against the people who were younger but couldn't step up.

I know that Rich has been playing WAFL for Subi, but from what i've seen of him against the bigger bodies he often struggles.
I would happily be proven wrong though.

I brought this topic up in another thread, but like reporters from the West I don't actually have a clue. I've only seen Rich once in person and he was okay without being a stand-out. Whereas the few times I've seen Hill he has been good to very good. Personally I wouldn't be upset with either. It's easy to say Hill isn't worth the number 3 pick, but there is no chance he'll be available by our second pick, so if the club really do want him, that's what they'll need to use to get him.

Slightly off-topic but if it's true we are going to overlook Rich, would Yarran not be the way to go? He could start the year filling the void we have in the forward pocket. Later in the year he can start rotating more through the midfield at which point another first year player can step into that forward pocket role.

Swift is probably another option worth considering. That last team to take a gamble on a extremely highly rated junior with injury troubles at no. 3 in the draft wouldn't be to upset about it. Well, they might be now since he's taken his ball and gone home to mummy...

If i was going to skip Rich/NicNat, i would also go Yarran.. he can slot in where we are desperate for someone.. and as you say, can go from there

Only problem may be, on the surface he doesnt look like the sort of player which immediately falls under Harveys type of player.. its a matter of whether they believe he can be moulded
