Crap, bad news for Stevo. Been a great contributor of our club especially through the years of '01, '02 and small parts of '03. Played over 100 games for the club, a couple of top5 finishes in the B&F and a premiership player to top it off. A great club man, never got the recognition he deserved through 2001 and 2002 but some experts from outside the club, notably Dermie, recognised his true worth. My best memory of Stevo is in the '98 GF when he came on after half time and took Blighty's instructions of playing on at all costs as literally as you possibly could. There is not one instance when he didn't run off McKernan after taking a mark in that game. Completely shut him out of the game aswell. Hopefully he stays around the club in some capacity.

Having said that, it is a tad annoying that he played on for virtually nothing. We could have drafted another young tall in Grundy or Kirkby in the PSD or even a crumber like Betts. Both types would be very handy for now and the future.

I didn't want to bring that up, but you're spot on.

Has he given any reasons? He's played every game this year in the SANFL so it seems quite a strange decision time wise.

Epitomy of a team man and the example to all those out there how you can still be a good player without being the most talented.

I think marksgirl will be shattered.

His 2001 and especially his 2002 seasons were excellent. I still firmly beleive that we would have played off in the 2002 GF had Stevo not been cleaned up at the start of the game and played out the match with concussion.

A very under-rated player

umm...didn't Fantasia say he would have drafted Hinge or Nye if we had another pick ?

Since I love to play the devil's advocate picture this scenario.

20 year's down the track there is this gun player that goes by the name of Mark Stevens Jnr. His father played 101 games for the Crows so AFC can pick him up under teh father son rule for a 3rd round draft pick when in fact the kid is clearly the best youngster in the draft pool :p

I don't know, but even so, we've basically wasted a spot on the list this year that could have been used to develop another youngster.

Still not blaming Stevo, both parties made the decision and I have the greatest admiration for him, as posted in my earlier thoughts.

Yeah sad end to Stevo's career. Very good player for us at CHB and CHF. When we talk about us never having had a quality forward since Modra, Stevens sometimes gets unfairly forgotten. If we could find another like him, we'd all jump at the chance to get him, I'm sure.

It does leave the door wide open for Fergus Watts. His time is now.

Maybe he was told that we are now looking at playing the younger players and he probably would not get a game.

....so can't we bring Nye or Hinge onto the main list ........

Stevo worked his butt off to get a contract this year and deserved his spot. Obviously, he has probably come to the realisation that his body can't match it with the big boys anymore.

Thanks for the memories, especially 2001/2002 when he played exceptional footy for us.

Now, it's time for Nye, Hinge, Andrews or Griffin to put their hands up and get a gig on the main list. May the best utility/midfielder type win. ;)

Really hope it is not because of not getting picked last weekend that he came to this decision......
Would be sad if we as an Adelaide supporters group , through asking NC 1 question at a press conference caused Mark to evaluate his future?

I hope he is at least comfortable with the decision and that it was his and his alone.

True, but we will pick up someone to replace him this year instead of last year. And who knows whether that will work out for the better in the long run or not.

No we can't but we can just elevate them at the end of the year. None of them would get a game this year anyway.

Yep, but it still would have allowed us another player on our Rookie list. And as **** said we can just replace him next year instead of this year but we still have lost a year of development on 1 young player.
