Is that all we need to do?

He has had a real purple patch of late and people are saying that stopping Brown is the key , but I am not so sure. Like most teams a forward relies on delivery and its the midfield of Brisbane that are the ones we have to watch this week.

Certainly having someone take some strong marks or gather the ball if it hits the ground does make it easier. But I would hope we dont go into the Brisbane match with the attitude of ''stop Brown stop Brisbane''

Absolutely right. If we go in with the mentality of stopping Brown (which is a nigh on impossible task at the best of times) someone else is sure to come up and bite us in the bum. Akermanis has found his lost form and Voss is no slouch. We must stop the supply to Brown IMO. I believe Rutten is too slow for Brown (hope he proves me wrong). And I believe Stevens would be eaten up and spat out against either Brown or Bradshaw. This game will be won or lost in the mid-field. And for the first time in quite a few years, I think we have a midfield that is stronger than they do.

Agree with everything here, except the Truck comment.

Truck game him a walloping last year, and hope he can do the same this year.

This will be our best chance to win at the GABBA. when was the last time we won there?

Brisbane is not one man team. I think they actually match up pretty well against us. Their midfield can still be VERY damaging. They have a great forward line and a very sound defence. A strong ruck division as well.

They are a pretty good team that can beat anyone on their day. I still have nightmares of the last time we played at the GABBA :(

And we should be damn wary about this game too. Brisbane are not that far off the pace at the moment and at home will be right up there. We would only have to be off our game a tickle to lose this one.

People were saying that Essendon and Carlton were danger games, which if you look at their lack of talent was nothing more than a fairy tale.

This Brisbane team has some genuine stars in it plus some rising talent - THIS is the danger game.

I wish we had played this mob abut 5 weeks ago when they were really struggling!!

Against Lynch the Crows had no Rutten to play.
Good call. If only we had the big body of the Truck to play on Lynch, then he may not have carved us up regularly.

Rutten can start on Brown but we always have McGregor up our sleeves as he has beaten Brown a few times as welll.

Rutten probably was our worst player on Friday night but I am sure it was only a one off for the big man.

This will be a craker of a game but we should win. Our midfield has more options and Brisbane whilst improving are a shadow of what they once were.

Charman looks like getting suspended and Bradshaw has a quad injury. If both of these plyers are out I rally fancy our chances.

Crows by 28 points.:)

Brown's performances against us have tended to be pretty modest.

Brown's performances overall have tended to be pretty modest - but the way the media carries on you'd think he was Wayne Carey in disguise.

Rutten should be able to hold him to one or two max.

His last three week flurry was impressive (Hawthorn - 8, Port - 7, Freo - 7) but all came in team demolitions against ordinary opposition when he played on individual opponents completely unsuited to him. The only true defender of any note he ran into in that 21-day period was Darryl Wakelin after Chad Cornes went off with his eye injury.

Throughout his career JB has had career spikes where he manages the odd large haul (see Essendon last year when he booted 8 in three quarters on Ty Zantuck and Ted Richards) in big wins, but very rarely if ever has he managed to dismantle a quality side and opponent.

Ben Rutten has done the job on him before, he'll do it again - it helps when you play real key defenders on key forwards and not the likes of Joel Smith, Luke Hodge, Antoni Grover and Jarryd Roughead.

You make some fair points mate. He is flavour of the month though in the afl when it comes to 'smart money'

Brwonlow betting

BROWN, Jonathan (BRIS) 5.00
GOODES, Adam (SYD) 7.00
JUDD, Chris (WCE) 7.00
GOODWIN, Simon (ADEL) 8.00
HALL, Barry (SYD) 11.00

Coleman betting

HALL, Barry (SYD) 2.75
BROWN, Jonathan (BRIS) 4.50

Always has been.

- Anthony Rocca boots 8 on Hawthorn and it's "meh, he was only on Zac Dawson"
- Nathan Thompson boots 8 on Hawthorn and it's "meh, he was only on Zac Dawson"
- Jonathan Brown boots 8 on Hawthorn (3 on Joel Smith, 3 on Jarryd Roughead, 1 on Luke Hodge) and fanboys from coast to coast compare him to Wayne Carey.

That's the way it goes, unfortunately.

Brown is a better player than both Rocca and Thompson put together,

Its now the amount of goals - its how they are kicked and their impact on the Game. Brown kept Brisbane in the game friday night, Brown will win Brisbane another flag before he is finished his career.Rocca and Thompson will only ever be part of a winning team - as much as I rate Rocca he has nothing on Brown

As much as Hentschel had a day out his 8 goals aren't worth the 4 Brown kicked against collingwood IMHO - which he was playing against quality opposition

and I suppose you could always add that Brown doesn't always kick goals - often he is the link man between the centre and the goal square.

Dunno. I rate Brown's potential highly, but he was very ordinary against Geelong, Sydney and Richmond.

If you're arguing Rocca is a downhill skier you'd have to take a look at Brown's career to date given he started off with the luxury of three premiership sides to progress in.

Not saying that about Rocca and all - I rate the guy, His ability to "inspire" a team with those 60m goals is an awesome part of his game, and he can kick goals and take contested marks - but JB does that and more (as a CHF)

geeze starting to sound slightly gay so I think I might just leave it there :D

I think most of you guys think that we are better than what we really are. We have improved a lot since the start of the year but I still think we are a fair way from the best teams in the comp (ie. Adelaide and Sydney). The question mark is how big our home ground advantage is. We seem to be getting some confidence back, but Adelaide are very good on the road.

Unlike dyertribe, I think our chances are very reliant on Brown. Dyertribe seems like a fairly intelligent person so I'm not sure whether to write him off as just another jealous 'Warren is better' Port supporter. Anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But I must correct you on a few things.

Brown was our best against Richmond, which resulted in him winning the Anzac medal.

I don't think you can call Brown a downhill skier, because since he has joined the Lions, in games where he has been absent the Lions have won about 50% of games played, and in games that he has played the Lions have won about 75% of games played. That is too big a coincidence to not give Brown some of the credit.

He was, but he didn't have much to beat did he?

Booted 2.3 up one end, while Richo booted 4.1 and went home a winner.

I was responding to the inference that "Rocca will only ever be part of a winning team", given that Brown started off in a near-invincible side with a star-studded supporting cast.

Good on him though, he is beginning to consistently perform in a side that is nowhere near as great as it once was, despite the midfield still looking frightfully strong on paper.

But Brown was playing up the ground. Leigh Matthews had declared he wanted him to run. Of course that's changed now.
