Maybe Daniel Rich can squat 5x175kg, but he has a trouble keeping his feet and has very little physical presence in the midfield. I realise this is off topic a little, just pointing out that his squat strength is arguably irrelevant.

He's narrow in the shoulders and doesn't look steady on his feet. Look at Gary Jnr and Pendlebury as examples of guys who are extremely hard to push around or even get off balance. They stand up in tackles and still hit handball targets time and time again... I'd even throw Daniel Kerr into that bracket as a guy smaller than them all, was like a rock.

Nothing beats core strength

core strength is great and heavily activated during squats and deadlifts

pendles also smashes out a lot of work in the gym

I heard the commentators today saying Joel Wilkinson for the Gold Coast can bench press 160kg which is a whopping 350 pounds. I know Cloke can bench a massive amount but I was wondering who are the strongest players at your club and how much can they do ?
This was a couple of years ago but in the nrl there was 19 a yr old.. Sam Irwin I think, who at 75kg could squat 270kg. I've never heard of another sportsperson in Australia come anywhere near this sort of power

IIRC correctly they had a bit of a strongman competition in the Footy Record in the early 90s, where each club put forward their strongest PB.

I think Mick Martyn was the strongest at the time. There were a few guys tied on 180kg and Mick went quite a bit better.

This was 20 years ago and I was very young and gaga about everything north so may not be completely accurate. Glasses of nostalgia rose tinted.

Barefoot box squatting engages muscle groups that normal squatting doesn't. It's IMO one of, if not the best, variants of squats you can do.

That picture ^ is actually taken at the gym I train at (with the 2 other guys in the photo).
The device on the bar measures power output in watts, and the bar itself is 35mm thick and weights 27.5kg. anyway . . .

at the Crows I would imagine these 2 have the biggest gym lifts (or they wouldn't have been posted lol)

I think most would be surprised though, at how little most AFL players lift.
There's definitely no one at Collingwood that makes you sit back and go "holy shit"

Youtube comments say the bench is about 125kg, any idea how much TW was squatting?

Yeah not that strong compared to the likes of rugby players, but they're strong enough for what they're doing.

^ What's funny about Cloke is that his gym lifts are pretty crap from my understanding lol (though I get the feeling this stems from a "I'm already strong so why do I have to do this?" mentality more than anything)

I worked out Walker's squats were around 160kg.

2 perfect examples of "strength isn't everything" are Blaine Sumner (American football) and Odell Manuell (NRL)
Sumner has a 400kg raw squat, 230ish bench and 300+ dead. has the record at the NFL combine for bench (55 reps with 100kg) but couldn't get a look in because he wasn't a good footballer
Manuell has a 390 squat, 235 bench and 400 dead since leaving the NRL

No idea what he lifts but Mike Pyke has to be up there.

:thumbsu:

And Mumford quickly corrected Podsiadly when talk turned to who reigned supreme at bench press.
"Shane's definitely the strongest. Look at the size of him," Podsiadly said.
"That's a massive lie right there," said Mumford, who later revealed fellow Sydney ruckman Mike Pyke was the club's strongman in the gym.

Depends on alot of things here, Cloke and Minson are huge so is Majak, but they have a very large range of motion due to having long arms... so would be harder to pump out so solid weight compared to someone like Rich who is smallish with short arms too, Jake king would also benefit from this....same applies to dead lifts and squats..

wouldn't bee surprised to see someone like luke ball rally load up on the weights perfect build for it....

Josh Hunt might have the best physique for power lifting. Very broad limbs and 100kg+ in weight. His size in his position arguably works against him too.

Strength can be measured in lots of different ways. Porplyzia may be a good lifter for his size (82kg) but he certainly gets knocked around on field, as he's just too light. As an example, it could be that Porps can bench more than Hunt, but on field, Hunt would simply rag doll him.

In AFL, as long as you can maintain your speed, you simply can't beat a good sized core (quads, hips and glutes).

Dane Swan would be up there at Collingwood, probably our strongest pound for pound, Jake King would lift a bit as well i reckon.
