I think the reason is obvious.. the guy who's job it is to count the interchanges on behalf of the AFL would've been creaming himself and waiting for them to exceed it, yearning for relevance. It's like a parking inspector standing by a meter with 6 mins left on it.

Honestly how hard was it for the campaigner to simply say to north hey you don’t have any interchanges left you can’t have X player come off. Not hard and doesn’t ruin the game.

Two players came off within about a second so it was done before anyone could say or do anything.

After McLean's goal in the North Sydney game, North Melbourne made yet another interchange. Why was there no free kick and 50 paid at the next centre bounce? Umpires cutting North every break yet again.

At least North didn't outright cheat with 19 players on the field with one minute to go and one point the difference. Only special clubs stoop that low.

Question: At what point is it considered an interchange? When the player comes off or when the new player comes on?
