How did Sandringham keep winning if they have a team of no names?

4-0 and apparently they've got no-one who'll get drafted in the top 30.

Don't know about that - would expect Constable and Brayshaw to both be there.

Sandy had 17 changes from Round 3 to Round 4 which is amazing.

Not good enough for mine.
I dont trust him with the football. Makes too many mistakes.
However he is quick and a side could definitely like his attacking assets.
He shapes as a rookie selection for mine.
Thanks mate

Says who?

Bishop above is the first Phantom drafter and/or contributor to say "perhaps" (on 25/4). This is ground breaking.

Same thing happened in 2016. No one rated any Dragons at this time of the year and what happened? Top 2 selected, 5 of the top 11. McGrath, Florent and Taranto were absolutely nowhere in these boards.
Yet they've each now already played 4 games of AFL football.

At the moment I read stuff about these teams that have all these top 10 draft guns, yet they don't actually win games of football. Isn't that what clubs and recruiter should be looking for? Players with the elite attributes to help them win games of football?

Sandy play keepings off to a tee, quick handballs and use high percentage passes to move the ball. Then when required they hold it up and play possession football. It's the structure and game plan that holds up and whoever comes in can play to that game plan.

Ah right. Give the season some time to play out and you'll see more names come to the forefront. Fwiw Andrew McGrath was being talked about this time last year after having 44 possessions and 19 tackles in the early rounds of the TAC Cup but you are correct on Taranto and Florent. They weren't really discussed in depth until the U18 Champs rolled around.

Taranto was late teens/early 20s on most boards start of July then August came and he jumped up after everyone realised he had the most score assists of any player. At that time Dunkley was doing a similar role for the Bulldogs. Also the showcase rookie game he dominated like JPK. McGrath was must get for GWS because he was a walk up start and replacement for an old Shaw and even Kelly if they knew he was leaving.

Just looking at Cal Twomey's 2016 draft articles and big boards.

Both Taranto and McGrath were in his U18's 20 young guns to watch article right before the U18 Champs kicked off.

Twomey's post Champs rap mentioned that Taranto should be an early draft choice.

Taranto was one of four Sandringham dragons in Twomey's June Phantom form guide, coming in at 15 in Twomey's first Phantom form guide for the year.

August Phantom form guide saw Taranto still at 15.

September saw Taranto climb to 10.

October and November saw Taranto at 8.

November 13 saw Twomey's write an article on Taranto where he mentioned Gold Coast was a chance to draft Taranto at 4, with the Carlton directly behind GC keen on Taranto as well.

And Twomey's November 24 Phantom Draft had Taranto at 2.

I asked Twomey on twitter about Taranto after his first final saying he should be a top 5 certainty and he didn't agree, wasn't for a bit until he rated him top 5.

Going back and reading Twomey's articles from last season, my guess is he didn't move Taranto in to his top 5 until he started hearing it from club scouts or recruiters.

We all see players differently, even in club land. It's easy on BF as most draft posters are essentially amateurs, and being wrong on a kid isn't career threatening. Even if you are writing for an online magazine or sports site.

It would be good if the Australian sporting market was large enough to support a wider range of media platforms. You look at the USA sports market, and some fan blog sites have grown so massive and are able to get media credentials for their club article writers, and what are essentially fan podcasts are able to get club General Managers, Coaches and players on to interview. This has helped quite a few fans (admittedly more than a few were college kids studying media or journalism) move in to main stream sports media.

The progression of Taranto in Twomey's assessment, and how he perhaps heard from club scouts and recruiters WHY they rated him so highly explains my ultimate issue:

Don't focus purely on "name" players who rack up stats unless you see how they use the ball, whether they chase, whether they read the game better than others, whether they make their team mates better players.....

To simply pick up stats of players in teams from a print out and post them here means very little IMO. Yes it's nice to get 30 possessions, or lay 10 tackles BUT more importantly are those possessions not just effective but DAMAGING? Did you lay those tackles because you were lead to the ball, or fumbled it when you should have been clean under pressure?

When you play in teams that win games, more often than not your possessions really count, your tackles create turnovers and........your team succeeds.

I agree to a certain extent...seems some players are entitled to do whatever they want and still get drafted. For others it doesn't matter what they do they have no hope because they don't have the right last name or right reputation. Some kids get drafted on what they did as a 16 year old.
