Watching both pre-seasons matches I could help but notice the absence of McQuillan. It opens up more options to have two quick runners in defence.

While I've seen very little of him, we're reliably informed he is tracking well and we know he is pure gas.

The side would be extremely well balanced with another quick defender.

Have we actually terminated his position on the list? I wonder if we will stay in his ear. Irishmen have left before and returned (Marty Clarke at Collingwood for example). Maybe the call of home is not going to be what's it's cracked up to be, particularly if he sees a happy and competitive Essendon playing (it doesn't have to be a as a top side, something like Sydney looked last year).

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed on this one.
McQuillan's photo is still up on the team list on the club's webpage, along with the new players.

Gee what happens to Shiel, Smith, and Stringer? They'll only be 31, 30 and 29...

And you're assuming that basically every first rounder pays off. And we know they don't.

I made a lot of assumptions.

That’s kinda what happens when predicting a side years in the future...

Pigeodo (C) next year. About the only one who gives a **** ATM.

Play the kids. Retire Hurls Hooksy Hepp and Zaka

Get as many games into Perky Nipples Brand Eyre Cox Reid ASAP to get them exp. For 2022
may as well. We wont win a game in that case so we should get pick 1, plus a high pick for Merrit. A couple of years of pain to come but we could hopefully see a competitive side by 2024

I actually wouldn't offer Merrett a contract and encourage him to exercise his FA rights, hopefully we finish last and take 1&2, I'd also pay 75% of Shiel's contract if we could get another top 25 selection, I'd consider offers for Parish as well.

If we finished last I would also target an OOC player and low ball the club at the trade table like Adelaide did to GWS for Hately.

I'd then pick the best available mids at each selection.

McGrath, Caldwell, Perkins, Horne, Sinn, Langford and Parish (If he stayed)

Jeez our midfield stable is bad.

The only mids that didn't play today were Zaharakis, Clarke and Perkins. (Heppell not withstanding)

Only one of those players has a future at the club.

The first choice midfield played every game last year and was largely blown off the park.

Caldwell looks likely, kind of what we wish Parish was, but he's the only real source of improvement at this point in time. Archie is a project I agree we needed to punt on but his game will be more about attack than resisting the sort of onslaught yesterday.

I suppose Dodoro gets the credit for recognising the need to recruit a specialist inside distributor for the first time in about 10 years but then it was all a bit of piss and wind. Why not get into Bont of Fyfe next time and refuse to offer fair value (i.e. exactly what you would demand if you were the list manager on the other side).

Somehow we need to add 3 mids. I'm not really sure how that happens.

Thing is, if merrett goes we lose an elite mid. And hope to draft an elite mid.
Almost any other player outside mcgrath or ridley (probably draper given our ruck stocks) and it would be worth it.

All encouraging merrett to leave does is take us back a few steps. Merrett is primed to be the leader of the midfield group.

Agree on shiel and if there are suitors for smith as well.
Let them chase success, get picks in to add depth and use the salary to plug holes

We need a starter FB. Reid and brand will take time. Someone who is 26-28, ready to start and durable.
And a dangerous small fwd to pair with tippa.

Matt crouch is RFA and was a good extractor in the crows GF year. Change in environment likely does him good.
If merrett stays, target as a freebie

Sier out of contract, nick daicos coming through. Potential deal there. Though we have lost our 2nd.

Both unlikely but green and hopper out of contract. Mccartney will want a lot for them though.

And the true hail mary - throw the cash at Oliver.

And use our top 2 pick on the best mid we can get.

Pass

Agree
He has a big body. That's about it but we do need it

Ideally for me, keep merrett, land crouch via FA (pay so the crows dont match), throw cash at hopper. If mccartney acts up, PSD it is. So tank v the roos.
Pass on Crouch too

We have enough front running, stat accumulating, undersized mids that dont defend as it is

We dont need to pay big money for one in Crouch as well.

When the crows had their midfield and team humming, he was a more than just a front runner.

In any event, was more a response to how we could add 3 mids to the side quickly.

2023

B Hind Reid Francis
HB Redman Brand Ridley
C Cox ? Langford
HF Perkins Jones Stringer
F ? 2MP/Eyre ?
R Draper Caldwell ?
INT Laverde Bryan ? ?

Id say over the next 2 drafts we need our big bodied mid for the centre. 2 x hard running defensive leaning mids with good footy iq and skills. 2 x small forwards with speed who thrive on pressure and tackling. Mozzie is still an unknown but we have 2 x Daveys on the way which should help there. Merrett is a win win for me. Happy for him to stay as he looks rejuvenated to me. But if he goes its looking like a top 4 pick so you take that, especially in this upcoming draft. Dunkley dream is over i think but still happily cough up a 2022 first for him. Parish is a very good player still in my opinion but has hid limitations. If he gets an offer or wants to go entertain it. Anything we can get for Smith, BZT, Guelfi etc to improve our draft hand we should take.

Kids don’t get too far when you throw 18 of them to the wolves to lose by 100 points. You need a bit of leadership and some strong bodies.

The likes of Hooker, Heppell and Hurley are important. When fit they should be playing, unless they show they’re totally past it. Hooker showed yesterday that’s not yet the case for him. He’s our best fit KPP by a space.

I’d keep playing those three along with Tippa, Stringer, Shiel and Smith. That’s only seven “oldies” taking up places and there’s no way they’ll all be fit at the same time. Plenty of room to play kids, don’t chuck everybody in the bin just yet.
