Yeh I can feel the seige mentality brewing

The media love a coaching handover plan, they get to poke and prod at it til they find a flaw they can mercilessly expose, to break it apart. Nobody wants a handover to work smoothly, doseht sell news.

I can understand why they have gone in house, as a fan I can wear it
You're right about the siege mentality - there's an extra tone to it all now.. but in reality they were already in-house.. they're been there for 3 years.

There is a bit of that for members, you get an email with a “from the coach” segment after every game.

This year because of covid some of them have also gone up on the club website so it’s not as exclusive anymore, but it is there and it’s more insightful than a post-match conference primarily designed to influence headlines the next morning.

The higher levels of membership probably get more insight than the pleb supporters that don’t pay for a membership at all.

I think part of the problem also is that we often get insight from players and coaches doing mid-week interviews for radio and TV, but we only do the radio ones with players after a win, and TV right now would obviously involve a video link in a hub.

I guess that’s why we now have half time media interviews with the coaches and that sort of thing, in exchange for the lack of other media engagement?

I’ve said for a few years now that the AFL industry isn’t mature enough and what you’re wanting is a perfect example.

Imagine Worsfold coming out and saying “Zac Merrett didn’t track back hard enough on a number of times”, that wouldn’t go down well for anyone.

Exaggerated example but it’s something the sporting landscape in this country is not ready for.

We’d likely destroy a player/club more than what we already do.
It’s simply the way the Australian media is wired nowadays. Get used to it. Until we are competent or comfortable enough with where we are at, it won’t ever be a regular thing.

Thats nice. Perhaps we could do it every week, if a five minute chat isn’t too much to ask.
Yes and it will propel us into the top 8 as well ............................
Average list plus a lot of injuries = the way we are currently playing.
What the coach says or does not say will make a rats sack of difference to it.

Agreed, I was only just saying yesterday I absolutely hate it when a bloke like Ryder jumps about with the the twin cobras after a goal vs us.

Or any former player vs former clubs really

I kinda love the respect EPL players have, they know it's a business and you move from club to club, the fans invest in you, so you nearly owe it to them to not celebrate a goal you might score against them later on with a new club

It's light years ahead in maturity really, just like what you mentioned

i don't know how many buy into this, but in many ways, we've already won, perhaps the players and coaches know this already and hence, making the finals or even a grand final just isn't necessary.

Richmond have been doing it for years. Hardwick was taking members through stoppage and set play reviews years ago. It really hurt them as they won two flags. They still do Coach's Corner every week where one of the coaches fronts up for a five minute discussion about the game, what worked well and what didn't work.

The notion that discussing any details of gameplans etc would "give away" information is freaking laughable. People do know that clubs all have opposition analysts who study how we play every week, yes? They know exactly what we're trying to do, which is probably why they find it so easy to stop.

You have zero info - which is us at the moment - and you have every last detail from inside meetings etc. Do people honestly think there's nothing in between that would enhance our understanding of what we're actually trying to do whilst not giving away "secrets"?
We were doing that last year, I think it was called ‘inside the play’. It was a surface level analysis, but more in depth than what most people would come up with themselves.

Usually of a good play where the players did what they were supposed to do structurally. Typically involved an assistant coach standing in front of a touch screen TV.

Not sure how feasible it is at the moment though. How is Hardwick doing it this year when they’re not based at their high performance centre or whatever it’s called?

Hmm

It shows my different view on things but I get them every week too but I can never be bothered reading them. I suppose different types want different things from their club

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Nobody saying it would make us a better team. It’s about kinda taking your members on the ride with you a little bit, especially this year when they can’t get to games.

I don’t watch it most of the time lol 🤪 I miss going to the footy and actually seeing for myself what is going on outside the frame. Probably worth noting that Rutten has done them all year though.

16 years no finals win
When we make them we get smashed
8 coaching rein handovers in 13 years (Knights, Hird, Goodwin, Bomber, Hird again, Egan, Woosha, now Rutten)
a drug saga
Draft picks lost

And record membership.

Why would they owe us an explanation?

Well I think it comes down to us wanting different things from the club. Maybe with the connections I have it is not as much an issue for me to be getting a lot of information from the coach or anyone about what we are doing. I get a bit of insight already and that seems to be enough for me so it is not as much of an issue. As I said above a lot of weeks I never even look at the from the coach stuff.

Surely we deserve better from the club?

Worsfold has long been a poor communicator in public but it’s gone to a new level this year, which of course leads to the conclusion he’s simply checked out.

So maybe it’s Rutten, I dunno. Maybe it’s Richardson or one of the assistants. I don’t really care. But the club needs to enunciate SOMETHING on strategy, on how we’re trying to play, and how it’s going via updates.

It’s simple to do and could just be a weekly spot. It’s done in-house by the club so can be planned without having to worry about what questions journos are going to ask.

It’s not 1995. People expect and deserve better than a weekly selection announcement and a “we’re disappointed, we have to improve / we’re really proud, great effort” after the game.
The simple fact is that what you'll get will have to be run through so many people to make sure it's not actually exposing anything of importance that there's nothing enlightening that they could tell you. In fact, it'll probably make you more angry that they've released something that's full of meaningless corporate jargon.

i would take a coach press conference where Rutten fronted up and showed some disappointment. Maybe with a captain alongside him?
Is a little bit of leadership in terms of accountability to the fans too much to ask from the club for whatever it is we pay in memberships?

Are you a member? Check your emails.

If you're not a member, you're not paying for anything in particular except perhaps Foxtel's crappy commentary and slightly-better-than-awful footage of the game.

This is true. Publicly criticising a player would see you dumped upon from a great height by the media, and you'd probably end up forced to resign. I don't think the media particularly care, it's just that they crave content and will make a mountain out of a molehill at every opportunity

I checked out long ago as well, so I can sympathize with Woosha.

We are just a bog average side that will spike a game here and there, drop and game here or there.

Enjoy it for what it is; A complete waste of time
