There seems to be an ongoing debate in various threads about this.

Obviously there is no right or wrong answer, with both being quality defenders, but I'd like to see which player this board rates higher.

I'll clarify: Which player do you think is the better key defender?

Hooker for mine. Strong mark in defence.
Would prefer to see Pears as a running half-back or wing, like McPhee in his 1 good year for us.

Pears. Have people forgotten when he beat Fevola then Brown two weeks in a row when they finished 1 and 2 in the Coleman? He also beat Roughead on multiple occasions, Bradshaw barring 15 minutes, and other very good key forwards in his 2nd year. He also towelled up Tippett this year, and kept Tippett to 2 goals when moved onto him after Hooker was getting ass r*ped by Kurt. Pears is a far better key defender

Hooker was a little bet better at first, but I think he's list a yard after his hamstring injury. That, combined with Pears's improvment puts him ahead now

Way too hard to call slighty different types of backman both who have had issues with injuries and associated form.. Maybe Hooker atm and Pears by the end of it all..?

Nah Pears was better at first, but Hooker over took him while Tayte was on the side lines too often.

Hooker the better defender, Pears better with the ball. Back Hooker in for the start of the year, but if both have uninterrupted seasons then we'll get a true idea on who is better.

So when Hooker was injured did Carlisle overtake him?

Pears is regarded by industry expert as arguably one of the best key defensive prospect in the game.

Keep hearing all this talk of his height. That height didn't seem to bother Scarlett or Silvagni.

Tayte. Still remember the game at the G against the Blues where he had Fev. Killed him all game, as well as snagging 1 or 2 from big runs out of defence.

To me, this is what we can get out of a fit Tayte Pears.

Tayte Pears by a country mile!

Cale Hooker struggles with his pace and isn't strong enough in my eyes.

Pears is quicker, built like a brick and is strong.

People state 2009 as Pears' best, which I agree with.

But what most seem to forget is he came into round 1 off literally no pre-season, and then his injuries in 2010/2011 are obviously well known.

He was also carving it up early 2010 before injury struck.

His best has him in the top handful of Full Backs in the league, for mine.

Cale Hooker. He is the guy I'd send to the players I consider to be the best key forwards in the game: Franklin, Brown, Riewoldt x2 and Cloke.

It is hard not to qualify my vote because they are also suited to different types. Pears is better suited to the smaller explosive types, like Fev, but there are basically none of those guys around any more.

I have to stick with Hooker because I see him as better suited to going the modern key forward.

A lot will also depend on Cale's hamstring. I noticed that Womb was talking about Pears early in 2010, I'd say that Hooker's form was very good with a few standout performances. He also played a few really good games at the start of the year.

We also don't want to limit Pears' rebound off half back.

Us in the pro-Hooker camp are probably getting our backs up at the lack of respect Hooker gets shown when EFC put up his name for trade (dramatically undervaluing his abilities and achievements) at every opportunity more than anything else.

Seriously there as a streak of matches vs Franklin and Riewoldt between 2009 and 2010 hamstring inury when Hooker hardly lost a contest. Both players were somewhere near their respective bests.

He is not as rounded as Pears (although he is getting there) but he is a bloody important player and KPD.
