South Africa is the hardest to grade. For half a decade they were by miles the best performed side. One series loss at home to Australia and that was it.
They have been so abject in the last few years that they’ve probably undone all of that.

Pakistan have lost more than won in the last ten years, and that's without playing India. Clearly in 6th place.
Pakistan have beaten every Test team they have played in a Test series in the last 10 years ( since January 2011). While, New Zealand haven't managed to beat Australia and South Africa in a Test series in the last decade.

Yeah South Africa until 2015 were comfortably no.1 but the last few years have seen them drop down to no.3

How important is that if you've already conceded that beating South Africa of today is not the same as beating South Africa of 5 years ago.

Sri Lanka also beat Australia in a series. Says more about why Australia isn't number one.

Finally, January 2011 was more than 10 years ago, so Pakistan haven't beaten New Zealand in a series within the last decade.

Its a big deal for New Zealand to beat Australia in a Test series, who haven't beaten Australia in a Test series since 1990, when Sir Richard Hadlee was still playing.

Also New Zealand have never beaten South Africa in a Test series in their entire history so beating South Africa too will be a big deal for them. In the last decade, they lost to a weaker South Africa both home and away in 2016/17.

Sri Lanka also didn't beat India and New Zealand in a Test series since January 2011.

I know technically January 2011 is outside the last 10 year period but only just.

Agree that South Africa are hardest to judge. Had a key shift in personnel recently & we're only just seeing how the young guns are performing now.

For all the noise that gets made about the quota system, it must be said that some of South Africa's best young players are currently players of colour.
