I seem to be in the minority, but I'm really not convinced by the Bombers. After Geelong in round 8, they didn't really beat any quality teams this year (beating West Coast and Port at home really isn't that impressive imo). Had a very weak draw, and while you could argue they would have been dusting off the cobwebs early, they weren't really impressive later in the season either.

Can't see them doing much better next year with a harder draw. Even with these inclusions.

They don't lack speed. It's more inside mids where they are weak.

Unless they shift the AFL into another attacking era (a la Geelong during their run of premierships), I don't see how this puts Essendon over the top for premiership contention. I know you weren't suggesting it too btw, just thinking out loud. Their issue was defence and tackling pressure this year and none of the additions address those all that much. Smith and Stringer are highly talented but appear selfish and loathe to pressure acts while Saad is a really good rebounder and relatively decent defender.

If they get all 3 they will certainly improve but I'm very skeptical that these will push them into the top 4.

Maybe I'm naive, but I still think we're the best team in the competition, but can't get it done in September for whatever reason. Not sure if there's anyone that we can bring in that will fix that.

That being said, I obviously hope we do pick-up a few good players.

I doubt there is any club who would be interested in trading in any of Tippet or Rohan let alone players like Rose or Cunningham who would rather exposure to Ebola Virus than put their head over the ball or tackle.

Well let me say a couple of words Cunningham and Rohan. While we select such players - one who refuses to engage and the other who has an ice cream brain freeze at the G we are not competitive at the business end of the season.

We are stuck with a number of poor selections on our list. This is compounded by playing these guys in games that count in September. I doubt there is any club who would be interested in trading in any of Tippet or Rohan let alone players like Rose or Cunningham who would rather exposure to Ebola Virus than put their head over the ball or tackle.

Rohan does struggle in September, no denying it. However, it was reasonable for the club to believe maybe he would finally be able to produce on the big stage after a career best season, and a fair few big moments in big games this season. Cunningham is a difficult one. He also stunk it up against the Cats, and I was yelling at the TV whenever he got near the football, but he had been in career best form before his injury.

It makes for a more difficult question next year, but the thought of dropping Rohan wasn't even considered by this board, and even Cunningham was given the all clear by most. In fact, plenty of posters were calling for Cunningham to remain in the side and for Towers to be dropped (who, in my opinion, was one of our better players in both matches).

Pretty hard to begrudge the board for their selections in my opinion, and I think "poor selections" is a harsh way of putting it. Our squad has pretty bloody impressive depth. Consider the 22 we had against the Bombers (it makes for nicer thoughts than the Cats), then consider we also have Melican, Aliir, Hayward, Dawson, Marsh, Tippett and Robinson (he plays his role well enough without being great when selected imo) right on the cusp of selection. Maibaum, Cameron and a few of the currently rookie listed players look like they can push for selection too.

I still firmly believe our best 22 is better than, or at the very least matches, any other 22 in the competition. Hopefully some fresh voices in the coaches box will change things a little, but people have pretty quickly forgotten that we had won 15 of the last 17 before the Geelong game - including away wins against all of the top four.

September seems to be our issue. Not the list.

Leading into the finals I was very afraid to verse Essendon. I thought they had all the tools to beat any team on their day. I still believe they have those tools but you're right they need to improve considerably to push for a top 4 chance. Nothing their current stock can't achieve though, they're a young side with plenty of talent. They just need a bit more structure and drive. Those 3 wont fix any glaring problems but will still help them

Why , anyone can go after tried players, good recruiters are the one's that get good players high in the draft.

He kicked 5 goals in 9 games (3 scoring games), had best disposal games of 17, 16, 15. Yeah he was tackling well, but he was still only a bottom 6 player.

It wasn't that he was getting plenty of possessions, it's that he was providing plenty of run and carry and a pretty handy attacking weapon going forward. 15+ disposal games are major wins for us if he is playing his role. Undoubtedly a bottom 6 player, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Yes, it's common for a new coach to look to his previous club because he knows the players well. I've no doubt he'll consider targeting some of our players if he thinks they will meet a need.

Ok, Cunningham yes! But Rohan? He can do everything right throughout the home and away season and is a factor in playing in the finals but you want to dump him because he struggles in finals?

Reverse logic: he’s dumped and no longer a factor, we have a 0-6 start again and he’s not there to keep you in the finals race...how’s that get you there? He possibly just needs a psychologist and/or another 21 blokes to do their jobs as well!

I should also note, I'm not trying to come across as blindly optimistic about the state of the list, but I really do think our issues have had plenty to do with mentality and a one-dimensional game plan and not the personnel itself. Beats me how we fix it.
