Thought I would share this with you guys that do not keep up on the north news and imagery. The kid has an amazing leap. The guy he is jumping with is a lazy 201cm for perspective.

He does have a great leap, we all knew what a good athlete he was though.

How is he progressing at training?

Not bad, the group has been up on the GC recently but he has been fairly good, very competitive type of guy but there are obvious deficiencies with some of his skills, awareness and reading of the play. I was expecting him to be as unco as Moran was when he first came to us but he seems to be more advanced.

I don't expect him to play seniors this year but should get some valuable experience in the VFL.

He is going to be a superstar in a year or so - his rate of development is like a bell-curve gone crazy. Fantastic role-model for the North-Western suburbs community, too.

So he's gonna drop off incredibly sharply some time soon?

I think the graph you're looking for is an exponential graph...

Plenty of players from the N-W suburbs. Calder Cannons etc. I'm assuming you mean the African/Sudanese set, which I would agree with.

I dunno if it's worth getting too worked up about a rookie pick tbh. Odds are stacked against.

Of course, but as long as it doesn't effect the young blokes work ethic or place pressure on him that he is unable to deal with, I reckon the positives aspects of his story are worth a few fluff articles and a bit of excitement.

I didn't say he was going to be a superstar, just said he has an amazing leap.

We have a pretty good history with our rookies though, we convert a fair few of them into good players.

Good idea tiger. You stick to what you know. :thumbsu:

Shall do, funny thing about that is, I'm a sprinter.

The runner that won the Australian Championships last year ran 10.34 seconds, so that would make Pyke about 3 meters faster than any other person in Australia over 100m despite all the specific training they do would it?

So you're saying we should allow him to train for the Australian Championships in the offseason?

Crazy enough to work. You Carlton flogs are alright by me.:thumbsu:

I think the current high jump record is 2.45m doing the Fosbury Flop technique, in AFL terms they could jump much higher but that is pretty much all they do and train repeatedly just to jump and take fairly long runups to do so at a immobile object.

I think guys that are natural jumpers who can play the game are exciting to watch, like Nick Nait, like Goodes pre-knee injury.

What did he test at draft camp for the leap?

He wasn't invited to the draft camp but Sheehan asked him to attend the state screening camp where his standing verticle leap was 70cm (would have put him equal 3rd in the draft camp. His 20m sprint was 3.03 and his beep was 13.6 and the best tall in the draft camp did 13.3 I believe from the article I read.

Verticle leap doesn't rate jumping ability, it rates general athleticism. Ability to jump is a combination of factors, take off speed, spring, centre of balance, etc. Some tiny guys are massive leapers, there are a lot of mechanics involved in jumping but having a good standing vertical jump is obviously a big advantage.
