It should be a rule that anyone who wants to complain about draft picks in hindsight give their picks BEFORE the draft so we can retroactively point back and laugh at them. The draft is not, and has never been an exact science, but if anyone wants to make a thread telling us who they would pick so in 5 years we can look back and tell them what a complete frigging ****** they are go ahead.

I know what you are saying Zahki and I know this is to back up my point.

But within my blog contains my picks from over the years (going back to 2004) with explainations. Contains some blunders, particularly in my earlier years of drafting but also struck some gems.

It's a science of unknown quantities. Mistakes are made and gems found. But Collingwood have been exceptional from 2005 onwards and I have full confidence that they will continue their good work for a long time to come.

Exactly, Hine has done a superb job in recent years. Scoring Sidebottom and Beams is probably one of the greatest drafting coups of that year. Dunno why anyone would have anything less than absolute faith in our recruiting staff right now.

Word around the club at the time was we would have taken Callan Ward at pick 14 had we not have traded it for Cam Wood.

Not prepared to right off Wood yet. He has talent and has shown it, just needs to work harder and get rid of those lazy patches he has in his game.

Will we even keep our 1st Round Pick or Trade it?

Likely keep. With Luke Ball and Darren Jolly last offseason I doubt we will trade for another player.

Possible is using an early pick on a mature ager like a Myles Sewell if we want a premiership now rather than later. But more than likely use it on the best available player in the draft at this stage.

Yeah, agree with best available, and hope the best available is a key position player, preferably a forward. But if not, no matter. Let's get something out of these messed up drafts, not fussed what it is.

Agree I think we will keep them after getting Ball and Jolly but I doubt we would Select a Mature Ager in the 1st 3 Rounds

If Presti retires, which would be a greater than 50% chance imo, I'd like us to pick up a mature aged (21-24) key defender. An Alex Silvagni type, for example.

Wouldn't Nathan Brown take Presti Spot and You have Jack Carter after that too who could play FB

I really liked the look Bonaddio. Geez that guy is a scary looking unit and takes a nice grab. Doesn't look AFL quality especially his mobility but he has cult hero written all over him.

Certainly in the right age bracket. No Podsiadly I agree but interesting name. Could go in a rookie draft to a despirate St Kilda possibly quite conceivably.

Been a Fan of Him for a Few Years while he Played at Port. We don't need them because we have L Brown who could play the Same Role

One of the Mature Age Recruits Collingwood are looking at is Nathan Phillips of WA. Having an excellent season in the WAFL.

Quality ball user on either side. Made big strides this season and has the ability to play forward or midfield. Was once a selfish small forward but is developing a more rounded game.

Another mature age recruit who is also having a fantastic season is Steve Summerton from SA. Tough inside mid who can kick long either side and while not the fastest he knows where to run.

Myles Sewell is obviously the standout player in the VFL and could well see himself taken in the national draft following the success of Michael Barlow this season.

Read in today's Inside Footy that Gavin Brown Gave Sunberg a Big Wrap and saying he has been Fantastic as a Small Utility and his Descion Making is good as Pendles.

With this kind of Wrap from the Club could we possibly Draft Sunberg?

Tom Sundberg
No. 54
22/12/88
182 cm
78 kg Recruited from Caulfield Grammar.
Very reliable in his third season at the club. Can play a variety of roles and is extremely clever and courageous in the trenches.

Sorry... here we go. This was my post from earlier today that I was looking for..

This list might be of interest. Some players I thought to be certain AFL quality prospects last season who just missed out on getting drafted. Feel free to track the progress of this list.

Mitch Thorp (May, may not get selected. Recruiters went cold on him last season despite his surprising delisting after being an early 1st round draft pick. So far at VFL level has not been anything special. Has talent but knocks against him are his application to his footy, bad attitude and injuries)
Chris Irving (Was looked at by the Collingwood football club during the rookie draft. Trained with the club. Has been playing excellent footy at VFL level. One to watch)
Myles Sewell (Likely to get selected quite high in the national draft next season after the success of Michael Barlow. If I were a top 8 side who want to win a premiership now I'd take this guy, big time ball winner)
Derick Wanganeen (Talented kid who should really have been drafted. Hawthorn were high on him during the drafting period but for some reason didn't select him in the end. Another who probably should have gone in the ND. Lightly framed wingman who is very short at 172cm, but that said he has a great attitude and I can see him going far with his career if given a chance)
Shane Page (A nice small in the bold of a Scott Burns. Has a great attitude and one who I think could be one of those who could go under the radar for a few years)
Kyle Hartigan (KPD who I rate highly. Playing well for Werribee and if I was drafting now I'd be looking at this kid with a rookie pick at the very least)
Serhat Temel (KPF who was highly fancied to go in the national draft last season. Has the strongest set of hands you'll ever see and has a reasonable goal sense. Natural footballer. Unfortunately got overlooked due to his lack of athleticism. Some suspect his work ethic or attitude were to blaim, but certainly should have been rookie drafted at the very least!)

*This is not ordered by preference of players but just giving a general oversight into who they are and what they are more so than anything for you all to keep your eyes out. From a Collingwood perspective I'm particularly keen on Kyle Hartigan and was throughout the national draft as a late pick. Then Myles Sewell you could almost look at with a 1st round selection he is that good.*

Just putting some names out there. Feel free to look out for them, all players who should again come under consideration come draft time.

Mitch Thorp - Won't get drafted as we agreed last weekend.
Chris Irving - Possible rookie selection.
Myles Sewell - St Kilda are looking at him very seriously as are North Melbourne and Hawthorn at this stage. Collingwood have indicated no interest.
Derick Wanganeen - Unlikely. Should have last season though I agree.
Shane Page - Same as Wanganeen.
Kyle Hartigan - Hawthorn and St Kilda are both high on him. Likely rookie pick for either club.
Serhat Temel - Read Wanganeen.

Hartigan and Sewell are the 2 ideal fits for Collingwood. Just Collingwood are not looking all that seriously at either of them.

The mature agers that are being looking into are Nathan Phillips (WA) and a few VFL names including Ashley Arrowsmith are also being looked at but less likely. Phillips at this point in time is the most likely mature ager to be seen in Black and White in 2011.

Info Here:

Collingwood have zero interest in drafting Sunberg, Pendlebury or any other VFL Collingwood player other than Tom Young who will be taken with the clubs final pick in this national draft.

Sunberg or Pendlebury at best could be selected by another club in the rookie draft which is at this stage unlikely with other players ahead of them.

:thumbsu:
I tend to agree. Sewell would have to be probably 2nd-3rd round selection ND and Hartigan could go rookie draft. If it was to happen.

I think Hartigan will reallty fit our Needs.

Is Arrowsmith really a player we need?

Anyone got any info/pics of this Nathan Phillips? i.e. age/height/weight etc.

DOB: 20th August 1987
Height: 186 Weight: 82

Midfielder who can also move forward and be quite damaging. Has been outstanding in the WAFL this season and has made the transformation from forward pocket into a quality, consistant inside mid. Can get the hard ball, tackles like a machine and is a quality ball user.

The plan if Collingwood were to persue him would be for him to become part of the midfield rotation and also spend some minutes up forward. At this stage he looms as a likely rookie selection for the club.

Don't we already have a Few of These Types of Players in:

  • Daisy
  • Josh Thomas
  • Jarrad Blair
  • Dayne Beams
  • Sidebottom
  • Didak
Not Saying Phillips is a Bad Player but we have a Few Already play Simmlar Roles as you Mentioned.
