The biggest reason to keep Hartung is that if we lose Smith to injury we are absolutely gutted for outside pace and endurance. Henderson is an okay replacement - but without Smith and Hartung I don't see how we have a midfield that stacks up.

Hartung is an absolute insurance policy - and for that reason alone he should get another year.

Hartung, though could run, rarely used that ability often enough.

It's like having a forward who's capable of kicking 100 goals but chose to run up the ground instead.

If Clarko doesn't like Hartung why does he get so many games? Even when Hill and Smith were playing he played nearly every game he was fit for.

And while frustrating he wasn't awful. Was unable to gut run wisely like Hill to get easy goals in the goalsquare (something Henderson did really well). Would like to give him another chance to get there.

Look thats a good question and i feel its a combination of reasons.

The 1st being that there was no one better on the list to play that role especially after Hill left.

And 2nd perhaps Billy was told to do certain things that he wasn't doing and given a significant run of games this year to correct it but hasn't addressed it.

Just my thoughts but would love to know clarkos.

If true I'd be disappointed to be honest. Had a lot of game time this year and showed glimpses of utilising his talent. Sure he is a bit soft but when he took the game on instead of running in circles it was exciting and you could see the players really re-enforce that that kind of play was what they wanted out of him.

Strange to have a 22 year old delisted after playing 18 games in a side transitioning into its next era. Can't recall any other team doing something like this?

Maybe Hartung thinks he can get a better deal elsewhere as a delisted FA, looking at Wrights comments it sounds as if there are some restrictions on our salary cap

Which would be utterly baffling given the 20% increase and the fact we pretty much picked up **** all through trades and free agency.

Something smells here.

Maybe he didn't like where we were trying to trade him?

Wouldn't surprise to see him bob (down) up in sydney next year.

Wasn't it Hartung's decision not to sign a new contract/

Hardly the Hawk fault.

They placed a value on him, he thought it was not right, so has the chance to walk and try his luck elsewhere.

Just a shame, knowing we are losing Brad Hill, that we did not extent his contract so that we at least could get a decent pick for him...

There is a reason why he’s not valued in the walls of the club. Not claiming I know, but have heard all the rumours that you all have. He’s obviously not the kind of bloke the club want, so I’ll support the club in cutting him.
Good luck for the future Billy!

His game at the G this year against the Suns was the final straw for me. Personally, no great loss irrespective of whether we received anything in a trade for him.
Sorry this sounds very negative, but no player has frustrated me more in recent times. Maybe Suckling in his final season before he took off.

I'm guessing he didn't sign a new contract and must have offers elsewhere as a DFA.

We selected him higher than many expected on draft night, I felt it was the list management group getting a bit over the top with elite runners (Smith - Hill - Hartung all in recent high selections). Although a weak draft, we missed out on a few quality players taken subsequently.

Can't win them all. Cya Billy.

If Hartung is gone, it's no real loss. Speed is nice, but decision making and team play are miles ahead. The guy doesn't sacrifice much of his own game for the sake of others. When it's his turn to go, he doesn't take it. Been hoping to see more, but it's always too few and far between. Cut from the same cloth as Tippett.

Hawthorn could draft a speedy runner from interstate with more heart and ability.

Just reading this on BF re. Billy - cannot find any media about it (last 48 hours).

I like Billy, and would be sorry to see him dropped from list. But there was a phrase that Graeme Wright used to describe Impey that stuck in my small brain - he praised Impey as being a true "North-South runner". By that, I assume, he means that he pushes forward HARD at all costs, to gain meters and does not get diverted sideward. Perhaps that is something that Billy is yet to really bring into his game, as he sometimes seems to retreat and take lateral movement that does not get us anywhere. I read somewhere that his stats in this regard don't seem to have improved much. If he is on the way out the door, I hope he finds a home and a great future somewhere else.

Other issues 1: I want to keep Heatherley. I like toughness and a willingness to stand tall with teammates. I admit it - I am a fan despite his shortcomings. And I know we seem to have an abundance of players who can play in the back half right now. But I just like him.

Other issues 2: Others and myself (I was not the first, many other posters before me) suspected that clubs might wait to see if Billy is dropped off list before grabbing him, rather than at least give us something. I will be a bit disappointed if that turns out to be the case. But all is fair and love and war, I suppose.

Then he wouldn't be a DFA and would have to go through the draft. So only makes sense if its Bris who he wants to go to.
I don't think he has to go through the draft, think there is a first in best dressed time period to pick up DFA like when we picked up Jono Simpkin.
Some timeframe around first lodgment of delistings prior to draft.

We butchered the Hartung selection considering he was an early 2nd rounder.
I was of the thought that he was a slider and that some were surprised that we got him at our pick. Would be good to see some predictions or fantasy drafts to see if this was the case.
Its kind of funny as I kind of formed an opinion of the player initially based on what or how he was treated in regards of his upgrading or downgrading on draft night, kind of if they were a slider and they don't go on with it in years to come, I say well that's what the recruiters thought at the time so no big loss. Then you get the rookies that come good and go on with it and I say well that was some kind if a win for us and then there is that terrible middle ground where you get a JOR and you just hope that can get just a little bit of something that looks like a former number two pick.
No hate on Billy from me but won't be missed on past output.
