Would you rather still have stenglein or ar you happy with thompson

2006 stats
^^this would suggest thompson was better this year

I think we did better considering thompson is 3 years younger but at the time i was devo as stenglein was one of my favourite players.

what do u reckon?

(********e thread I know but im bored and not tired enough to go to sleep!)

Stenglein for me and by a fair margin as well. for a few reasons:

*Stats dont indicate how well Stenglein plays not only does he get his own ball but he negates one of the oppositions prime ball winners.

*Stenglein is a better user of the footy, i hardly recall Stenglein being open and missing a target, where as thats the usual thing for Thompson to do.

*Free Kicks and 50 metre penalties Thompson seems to give stupid ones away at crucial times where Stenglein is a much smarter footballer.

So in my opinion this isnt even close Stenglein wins hands down. This isnt to say that i dont think Thompson will be a good footballer for us, but just that i believe Stenglein would have been much better.

Stenglein was excellent when he was with the Crows, I think he gets a bit 'overshadowed' in west coast's line up. He's a very consistent player and that's something we haven't seen from Thompson yet. They both play different styles of game and are utilised differently. So I feel if they were both playing for the Crows at the moment, Stenglein would be better. However, Thompson is still young so he has plenty of time to improve.

Stenglein just helped WC win the flag while Thompson, granted he played a blinder against Freo, all too often went missing.

Still, he's a couple of years younger than Stenglein. Let's hope the likes of him and Reilly continue to improve with each season.

Given that the Gibson draft selection was a failure.....I'd have to say so far Stenglein is the more consistent and reliable footballer.......but hopefully with some younglings developing Thommo will realise he will be left in their wake and destined for permanent HB Flanker status if he doesn't focus on his work.

I'd much rather have Thompson. Realistically I don't think we can win a flag until we have developed the key forwards we drafted this year and our very promising ruckman. By that time Thommo will be in a league of his own.

Only 23 from memory, a future captain of the club.

For mine Thompson only due to his "excitement" value that Stenglien didn't really have, I also think that Thompson has played much better footy at the Crows compared to his games at Melbourne whereas Stenglien hasn't found his best at West Coast. Thompson has much more improvement yet to fulfill whereas Stenglien has reached his peak. Mind you he can come back if he wants!!!

I think the only time I'd prefer Stinger is ironically when we're playing the Weagles, he'd be good and useful then.
Otherwise always give me a Scotty T, love him. Overall though a good trade all around.

IMO it's a no-brainer

Stenglein was an excellent run with player, not an attacking physical on-baller. Exactly what West coast needed though, with their bagful of attcking mid-fielders.

Thompson on the other hand is a more physical attacking on-baller - one which can give the mid-field grunt. In addition Shirley stepped up to do Stinger's role, and while not quite as good as Stenglein, still did a damn good job.

Effectively we lost 25% of Stenglein perhaps, and gained 100% of Thompson.

That turns out to be a definite win for us as well as West Coast. A damn good trade really. :thumbsu:

Thompson is a bit inconsistent, and we haven't always seen his best week in, week out.

Stenglein is an unheralded, 1%'er type, of midfield glue player - who delivers almost every game.

But anyone who thinks Thompson is a not a much better football player is just bonkers. We don't always see it, and we need more - but he's a much better player. Much.

Thompson can be elite, stinger never had that, never will - though he does bring a lot to the table of course.

I would much prefer Stinga at the moment. THompson is way too inconsistent at the moment and drifts in and out of games. Stinga is way more consistent, can get his own ball and negates the opposition player as well. Stinga at the moment.

Its kind of like investing in an aggressive fund with potential high returns but high risk versus a balanced fund with more guarantee but less upside.

Could it also be argued that good players are made to look even better in great sides ?. I tend to think that with Stenglein. He is a great player but when you are surrounded by superstars like he is, it can put you on another scale.

Thompson, is still young and raw and I am sure he can iron out his deficiencies to become a champion. As they say, time will tell.

agree, stenglein is the better player currently, but you would take the thompson deal everytime with his aggressive play and the potential he has to come much better.

If the unthinkable happens and both stay around the same level they are around now then obviously we've lost. Interestingly Rosa went the pick after gibson in the draft, so there was a chance to make the pick we got count.

We were after Key forwards though, not mids.
